A NOTE OF OPTIMISM Some fifteen months ago, soon after I came into. office,.. I made a seven hundred mile trip around the State to ascertain the best I could the condition of the farmers. I feel sure I inter- viewed more than one thousand. With hardly a single excep- tion, I found them in a woeful condition. The farm lands were _ neglected, terraces broken, fences down, barns and homes in decay from twelve years neglect. Houses leaking and farmers moving beds from corner to corner of the room to avoid leaks. Steps and verandas fallen, many: windows stuffed with pillows E = where glass had been, livestock were mostly old and t ept This situation was also reflected in the rural schools and churches. Many children were out of school for want of shoes and clothing. The country churches: Gods best habitation on earth, were practically empty. Pinching poverty does not seem to be conducive to faith but rather to rebellion and hardness of heart. The farmer himself seemed forlorn and hopeless. His wife looked worn and weary. The children were poorly clad and poorly fed due largely to the lack of balanced nutritious food, one hundred thousand farm homes in Georgia without a siecle milk cow. Now could a picture more dark and more true of the Georgia farmer in January 1933 be painted? Now a month or two ago I made about the same tour of the State, What did I find? The farms and fences and barns and homes in most cases showed touches of improvement. A barn here with a new roof, a home there with new paint, old ver- andas repaired and recovered. A new siding here and there. Windows full of real glass, churches and school houses in better shape. _ _ I kmow the farmers are still far from comforts and luxuries. They are still only a little way from penury and serfdom. They have uncomplainingly borne the heat and burden of the world. Their spirits have been well nigh broken. They have been foot mat on which the favored classes have entered the temple of privileges. I think a better day is dawning for them in the name of the Forgotten Man. Early last year practically all his products sold below cost. This condition had existed for years until he had about come to the end of his way. Cotton sold at 6c; now llc. Corn sold from 18c to 40c in different sections of the State, - now 80c to $1.00. Peanuts at $21.00 per ton, now $60.00. Sweet potatoes 40c to 50c per bushel, now $1.00 to $1.25. The last years crops of apples and peaches sold far above the prices of the previous year. While the cotton crop was some four million bales less than the year before, it brought a total of $630, 000,- 000 against $397,000,000 for the much larger previous crop. This is besides the ventals received from the Government by the farmers. Tobacco sold for a total of $6;125,047.03, com- ~ pared with $1,238.748.88 for the previous year. Cottonseed |} were $9.00 per ton, now $26.00. Wheat was 40c per bushel (Continued on page Four) iE enin and Hay Wanted Want quotation on 250 bu.
