GEORGIA STATE CAPITOL OLUME 16. ARKET BULL AGRICULTURE... COMMISSIONER === PUBLISHED BY THE BUREAU OF MARKETSJ. F. GREER, DIRECTOR. ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, AUGUST 10, 1933. _ Peaches, Melons and Tobacco The total Peach movement by cars up to July _ 29th, from Georgia, was seven thousand, seven hun- _ dred and twenty-three cars, which brought a net re- turn to the growers of approximately two million dollars. The Gusti has been good and markets have _ been apparently active all season. This crop should __ be a great help to the growers, due to fair produc- : tion and fair to good prices. Good quality fruit is ~ largely responsible for the price and this fact should _ encourage growers to ship the best peaches in order to secure the best prices. Orchards were picked al- most clean everywhere, which indicated a good de- - mand all through the season. ; The Watermelon season is now coming to a close with shipments of eight thousand, four hun- _ dred and seventy-four cars from Georgia, up to July - 31st, which yielded the growers approximately one- a half million dollars. All growers who shipped good - quality melons received some money for each car. c The Bureau of Markets has handled approxi- - mately two hundred cars so far this season, and on _ every car that reached the market in good condition, _ the shipper received fair returns. : I would like to take this occasion to say a word _ to shippers on the subject of the importance of prop- erly packing and grading their melons. Cars, of course, must be properly bedded and papered and melons tightly packed to prevent shifting in transit. All melons should be as near uniform size as pos- sible, as nothing detracts more from a load of mel- ons when it reaches the market than to be loosely packed and shifted in the cars, with all sizes loaded therein. So watch this carefully and you will be - fully paid for your extra time in loading. The Tobacco market opened this week with a bang. Prices varied from eleven cents average to sixteen cents, and from reports from several mar- kets everybody was pleased, especially from mar- kets where the best quality tobacco was offered for sale. Indications were that the crop would total from forty-five to sixty million pounds, bringing the growers approximately seven and a half million dollars. This estimate has run as high as nine mil- lion dollars, and I hope that it will equal this amount this time, but an estimate of seven and a half million _ doilars is conservative, according to the reports coming in to the Bureau of Markets. Good quality products will bring money on any market, so lets all pull together on this idea and it will be you more for your work than any- thing else. J. F. GREER, Director.
