ah t - Second: Hand Farm 1 Machinery, Flower. and Seed, Incubator at Ornamental Nursery Stock Monthly Supplement | GEORGIA _ BULLE (Sas Susy > eh) SR a PUBLISHED BY THE BUREAU OF MARKETSJ. F. GREER, DIRECTOR. ee C. ADAMS, _ VOLUME 16. STATE CAPITOL if ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, AUGUST 8, 1933. fe. Crops for Abandoned Cotton Land The most important use of abandoned cotton land can be made by seeding to some winter legumes. The ac- reage in Austrian winter peas and Hairy Vetch planted last fall was more than doubled from that of 1931. This - increased interest shows a realization of the value of these crops in the farming program. Winter rains cause very heavy erosions on unpro- A tected soils. Then our soils are badly depleted in humus, and a crop of winter legumes produce from two to five tons of green matter to decay and build up the product- ivity. Legumes also have the ability of using atmospher- ie nitrogen. . For the past five years and before some most valua- ble demonstrations in the growing of these legumes have been demonstrated in many counties of the state, These demonstrations have increased the yield of corn and cot- ton by more than one hundred per cent. The best advice any farmer can get about these crops is from a neighbor who has been successful with them, or from the County Agent who knows the prob- lems in his particular county. There are other varieties available for fall planting, but the two most commonly used are Austrian winter peas and Hairy Vetch. It is but little trouble to get a stand with these, and their eeeey to make good growth on thin soils. Both vetch and peas will stand the cold Bator in this section where they have had time to establish a good root system. Austrian peas are ready to turn about ten days earlier than vetch. However, the problem of di- ease seems to indicate that vetch is more resistant than peas. Austrian peas should not be planted on land two years in succession. Hairy vetch can be grown on the same land year after year. It seems to be profitable to fertilize oa outed: with from 200 to 400 lbs. of acid phosphatewhere there has been liberal fertilization of cotton used under the. crop now being plowed up it would not seem necessary cen to add any fertilizer to this land. If acid phosphate is used, care must be taken to see that it does not come in direct contact with the inoculated seed as this might in- jure the inoculated bacteria. Planting should be done early in Oelnter. If plant- ed earlier it is more subject to disease; if planted later _ they would be injured by the cold. The young plants just out of the ground are easily killed by cold. Planting should not be done when the ground is dry and hot as this would injure the inoculated seed and it would germinate poorly. It is best to plant as soon after a rain as the ground will do to work, as this will enable quick germination and rapid growth, Hairy vetch gives good results when 20 to 25 lbs. of 3 (Contniued on page five) ae fees MARKET REPORT OF GHOre* PRODUCTS Prevailing Wholesale Prices July 31, 1983. CROPS FOR ABANDONED COTTON LAND (Continued from page one) seed are used per acre, while 30 to 40 lbs. of Austrian peas should be planted on an acre. Seed should be planted about two inches apart, but farmers should use their own judgment in the method - of planting. If planting is done in cotton where it has not been plowed up it will be necessary to pick the cot- ton just ahead of the planting. ; It is necessary for successfully growing fasamee to use bacteria of the proper strain for the variety. This bacteria can be furnished by the Department of Agricul- ture at cost. The quality of this inoculation can be de- pended upon absolutely. These bacteria may also be ob- ee from a neighbors field that grew a good crop of The County Agent can advise Get the soil where a good growth was made last year. Screen the soil and let it dry in the shade. See your County Agent or neighbor who has had experience with these crops as to how to best mix the _. bacteria with the seed. Care must be taken i in not letting - the hot sun injure the bacteria. | ' -Tf the seed are sown broadcast by hand care should be taken to see that they are not sown far phen of the ney as they might be ie by the sun. CONCLUSIONS Winter legumes keep land from washing and supply - - badly needed humus for the soil. ; If sown in cotton middles, pick over the cotton just before seeding. The remaining unopened bolls will not be injured and will open later. Hairy vetch or Austrian winter peas give excellent : results, although vetch is more disease resistant. Plant in October, preferably the first half of the : month. Apply 200 to 400 pounds of Pulse or basic slag per acre before planting. Use 20 to 25 pounds of vetch or 30 a 40 Ibs. of Aus- trian peas per acre. Plant two and 4 inches deen. Leave middle furrow in sandy soils. Inoculate carefully, keep seed in shade until sown, and plow in immediately.
