DEPARTMENT. G. C. ADAMS, PUBLISHED BY THE BUREAU OF MARKETSMAX L. McRAE, DIRECTOR ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, JULY 20, 1933. STATE CAPITOL AGRICULTURE = Ae = V *COMMI SSIONER: NUMBER 29. A Trip To South Georgia On last Monday, I left Atlanta for a three days trip to South Georgia. I* stopped in Macon for lunch at one of the best restaurants in the city and called for peach pie for dessert and was informed that. they did not serve - peach pie. They offered a choice of cocoanut, lemon and other pies, but _ notwithstanding the fact that Georgia is right in the midst of shipping a fine crop of peaches, a peach pie could not be secured at this restaurant. I hope our people, in stopping at hotels and restaurants in Georgia, will call for Georgia products and if they are not served and a sufficient number of peo- ple call for these products, and complain about their not being served, they will have to supply them. This will help a great dal in consuming our sur- Blus. Dees On Tuesday, I attended a meeting of the pecan distributors at Albany, and met a great many of the leading pecan growers of that section. An ef- _ fort is being mde to organize tke distributors of pecans in the pecan produc- ing states in order that a code of ethics may be adopted which will remedy 4 . great many evils that have entered into the marketing of pecans. At this meeting a tentative code of ethics was adopted and a later meeting will be held on July 25th, at which time, it is hoped that a permanent code of ethics may be adopted which will be presented to the Agricultural Adjustment Ad~ ministration in Washington for approval. I feel sure if a fair code of ethics | is adopted, it will greatly benefit the growers of pecans in Georgia and will insure a fair return to the grower for his nuts. 2 On Wednesday morning, I visited Vidalia, Ga., and found that a large canning plant had been put in there for the purpose of canning tomatoes grown in that section. Quite a large acreage of tomatoes were planted in that section this year, but due to unfavorable weather conditions and improp- er selection of soil upon which the tomatoes were planted, a very small crop was produced. A representative of the Department of Entomology accom- _ panied me to Vidalia and offered some very helpful suggestions to those in- -terested, as to the proper selection of seeds and soil for the planting of the next crop. I am sure that if these suggestions are carried out that the Vi- dalia section will be able to grow tomatoes very successfully, _ I am in receipt of the following letter from a large grower and breeder of seeds in middle Georgia, which I publish in full below, as I think the sug- _ gestions offered by Mr. Bolton are very good, and hope that those who use the columns of the Bulletin will exert every effort to improve the quality of products they ship and make every effort to satisfy their customers: Griffin, Ga., July 11, 1933. Hon. Max L. McRae, : Atlanta, Ga. My dear Sir: I appreciated your editorial in the Bulletin of last week, relative to the farmers or advertisers being careful of things offered for sale and shipping same as it should be. I have heard a good many com- plaints from farmers meee, claiming they did-not get what they bought. I hope you can, by some means, get this, our - ineditum of sales, on a better plane so far as failing to offer only A-1 products and ship them so they will reach destination in like manner. I sell a good deal through your good paper and I shall promise ~ you to make every customer a satisfied customer. I dont see how I could farm at all were it not for the Bulletin. I sell lots of seed corn, but I would not be able to pay for the ads in any farm paper. Again thakning you for all you are doing to make the Bulletin a real advertising medium, I am, . Yours truly, W. H. BOLTON. It will be our policy to carry items for those. who deal fairly, but those who do not deal fairly will be denied the use of our columns. The U. S.- Z Postal authorities have recently made several cases against people who Car- ried notices in the Bulletin and received money and did not ship the articies. These cases will be investigated by Federal Grand Jury. .- ' Announement has been made from Washington that the drive to reduce eee the 1983 Cotton Crop by 3,600,000 bales has been successful. MAX L.
