DEPARTMENT of Me G. CLAUDE ADAMS, - PUBLISHED BY THE BUREAU OF MARKETSMAX L. McRAE, DIRECTOR _ STATE SELL ATLANTA, GEORGIA, eae JUNE 8, 1933. x conference was called in Watinoie for Saturday, 3rd, by the officials of the United States Department of culture, who have charge of the Agricultural Adjust- t Act. A group of about 150 representing all organiza- interested in the cotton industry including cotton and extile mills, shirt, hosiery, rubber and other manufacturers ton fabrics, Farmers Union, National Grange, Farm Bu- us, Cotton Associations were present, but as far as my in- mation goes, none of the cotton farmers or producers of ton were invited to attend this meeting. Hon. Tom Linder - appointed by Governor Talmadge and I was appointed ommissioner of Agriculture Adams to be present at this sting. Representatives of the various organizations named ve expressed their views.as to the best method of increas- the price of cotton at this time, and with the exception of ee or four, who addressed the meeting, they favored the n being sponsored by the officials in Washington of plow- up one-third of the present crop and reimbursing the wer for the same. Neither Mr. Linder nor myself subscrib- to this plan, as neither of us thought it was feasible and rkable. United States Senators Smith of South Carolina, head of Alabama, and Thomas of Oklahoma made very ong arguments in favor of the adoption of this plan. Iam not advised whether or not the officials in Washington expect call a conference of the cotton producers to be heard on is subject before a definite decision is reached. The offi- ls in charge of the Agricultural Adjustment Act now have matter under consideration and will doubtless reach a de- sion in a short time. It is admitted that there will be a car- over on July ist of approximately 13,000,000 bales of cot- ,and if the farmers give up one-third of their 1933 crop, it will inerease the value of the cotton now-on hand several cents a pound, but this cotton is not in the hands of the farm- ers, but is in the hands of the mills and. speculators with the exception of approximately two and one-half million bales * that is held by the Government. If the farmer is required to destroy one-third of his 1933 crop and the price advances 33-1/3% from its present level, he will not be benefited. On the other hand, one-third of the people who would be em- at ployed in picking, ginning and compressing this portion of the crop to be destroyed, would be thrown out of employment. I expect to be in Washington on Monday, Tuesday and Wed- _nesday of this week and hope to have further conferences with the administration officials and I am hopeful that some | other plan will be worked out that will have the effect of en- hancing the value of cotton without cere any of the. 1938 crop. - I have a great many requests from oe he wish to _ purchase Registered Cattle and I will appreciate it if a of the breeders of Registered Cattle in Georgia will write me and > give me full information regarding the breeding of cattle they are raising and a list of all of the Registered ie they have for sale with prices on same. Mr. O. G. Strauss, Federal Supervising Inapketor of the United States Government, has opened his office at 915 Geor- gia Casualty Building, Macon, Georgia. He will have charge of the Government inspection on peaches and watermelons for this season and any grower of either crop that desires Gov- ernment inspection on same can secure full information by writing to Mr. Strauss. oe | -MAX L.
