a DEPARTMENT of (465 DEPARTMENT of Asti AGRICULTURE. COMMISSIONER: PUBLISHED BY THE BUREAU OF MARKETS A, D, JONES, DIRECIGR. STATE CAPITOL ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 24, 1931 (RRR RRR RERUN E SEEERR When the Wicked Rule, the Righteous Will Mourn The rider carried on the Appropriation Bill, prohibiting me from publishing any editorials in the Market Bulletin, is the greatest compliment that I have ever had paid my writings. If I had been publishing each week in the Market Bulletin false and exaggerated information, I would have been answered; I would have been shown up and made ridiculous and the laughing stock of the people of the South. f I had been printing canned stuff, a mere jumble of words, of course it would have gone unnoticed. If I had been printing insidious propaganda, furthering the plans of ome big interest to fool and pillage the farmer, I would ave had some able spokesmen and helpers to give me more appropriation and more space for printing these editorials. I have been trying in the editorials that I have written in the Bulletin for the past four years to point out not only to the people of Georgia, but to the people of the South, the undamental causes of depression in Agriculture. I have also tried to suggest remedies. It has become necessary for me to call attention to the xhorbitant war-time freight rates on raw products that amount to about three times as much as the farmer receives for his products. It has also become necessary for me to all attention to how the tariff affects wie farmers of this country. It has become necessary for me at times to expose dif- ferent companies and individuals who were defrauding the armers of Georgia. I felt it my duty to expose the transactions and the busi- ess dealings of the Georgia Cotton Growers Co-Operative Association with the farmers of Georgia. I pointed out how hey linked up with the Federal Farm Board. [also notified he people of Georgia that the Federal Farm Boards first ct was to loan the Cotton Co-Ops of the Southern states oney to pay their gambling debts. The only way that they an expect to pay back this money was by the Co-Ops mak- g money out of the farmers. . J also pointed out in the Market Bulletin the connection of the Governor of the Federal Reserve Bank with the Co- Ops, and his appointing J. E. Conwell as public weifare ; director for the Georgia Cotton Growers Co-Operative Asso- - ciation at the time that J. E, Conwell was president and general manager of the Georgia Co-Ops. In other words, I published in the Market Bulletin that Eugene Black, Gov- ernor of the Federal Reserve Bank, appointed J. E. Conwell to check up on and watch J. E. Conwell. All of these facts were given to the daily press fears being published in the Market Bulletin. Some were pub- lished by them, and some not. I realize that a paper must ~ use caution in regard to different accusations that it carries 4 in its news columns. There should be a medium whereby the farmers of Georgia are put on notice as to what affects their interests. I tried to make the editorials in the Market Bulletin this medium. When I published these editorials, I ae that they were knocking the bark off of some strong and pox werful interests. Both the Central of Georgia Railway and the Southern Railway Company complaind to me about carrying these | editorials in the Market Bulletin. Mr. George W. Hill, President of the American Tobacco Company, New York City, wrote me.a long letter, calling me to task about pub- lishing an article in the Bulletin about the small price that they were giving for tobacco, and the enormous advance in # price in the shape of cigars, cigarettes, etc. Of course, these interests that I have enumerated will smile at my being muzzled. We all must bow to the law, whether we think it wise or not. I will try to find some other way to keep in touch with the farmers of this country. I believe this to be my duty. In next weeks issue of the Market Bulletin, I will let you know where I will publish my editorials after January Ist. We are living in a very extraordinary time. The-only potential wealth of this country is its land and the labor, - sweat and toil of its people on the land. Fer the past few : years we have seen our best farm lands go down until it will (Continued on Page Twelve) - MARKET REPORT : OF GEORGIA PRODUCTS _ Prevailing Wholesale Prices Dec. 22, 1931. Atlanta. Norah Jy Warwick, RFD 1, Box 47, HOME-MIXED FERTILIZER Alto, Ga., Nov. 18, 1931, Hon. Eugene Talmadge, State Agricultural Commissioner, Atlanta, Ga. : Dear Sir: 7 ae Iam writing you concerning fertilizer that I mixed at home. used this past year. You may publish this letter if yo think it would be of benefit to a one. I hope that many farmers. profit by my experience and stop b ing ready-mixed commercial sua I will give you a formula that I use and made 37 sacks of the best guan I have ever used at a cost of $25.4 which is a fraction less than 6 per sack. First, I saved all the wood ash parties wha cheap. Eys seed screen and went into the co stalls and screened into a large wash tub and poured into stacks several sacks of dry manure. I bought sacks of acid phosphate and ei sacks of cotton seed meal, pounds of sulphate of ammonia an 100 pounds of nitrate of soda. The I poured out on a floor 2 sacks ashes, 2 sacks of manure, 2 sacks acid phosphate, 3 sacks of cot seed meal, 1 50 pound lard can of sulphate of ammonia and a ha bushel of nitrate of soda. Then mixe it all together and stuffed into guan sacks. I do not know what this wi analyze, but it will make the cro grow. I would not trade it, sack sack, fory any. guano I ever saw, I have used some that cost $45 p ton. It will strow through a horn a distributor as well as commer guano. ae _ Do not mix this guano till you ar ready to use it, for it will eat a sa entirely up in two weeks. You mix this guano at a cost of $3 pe ton. Why pay more? For my o part I will say that any man w. can sell me a sack of commer guano in the future is some sa man, to say the least. S Farmers, we have been _work ourselves and our families nearly death and paying nearly all we ccul make to guano companies, who 6 waxing fat and rich at our experse and laughing at us. Lets stop it. We can do better than that. You can read the analysis on a sack of guano and it will tell you that it contains from 20 to 40 pounds of plant foo The rest is filler and not wort hauling home. We can have 20 pounds of plant.food to every sack at a cost less than half what we are paying for the small percentage plant food we get in our commerci guano. Think this over. ae W. A. JOHNSON, Alto, Ga. A Oone-horse Dirt Farmer. We are reprinting Mr. Johnson letter because of an error which ap- peared in the article in the Decem) 3 issue.
