DEPARTMENT + 6 EUGENE TALMADGE - PUBLISHED BY THE BUREAU OF MARKETS A. D. JONES, DIRECTOR. STATE CAPITOL ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 17, 1931 2 CONGRESS. = The Congress of the United States assembled in Washing- on in regular session on Tuesday, December 8th. - About eight weeks ago, President Hoover called a meeting f some of the representative men from all over the country ind devised a plan of putting life in frozen assets. In other words, he handed to this group of citizens whom he called (0 meet him in Washington a plan that would turn loose mil- ions of dollars to the bankers of Wall Street. Ido not know ow to put any life in frozen assets, t will melt and run away. The great trouble in this country at se is that farming ff you warm it up, prone on its back. The buying power of the farmer is gone, nd every other business is suffering on account of this yuying power of the reuben being gone. he farmer cannot buy is because he has no money. The sason that he has no money is that he has not gotten cost: ut of what he made to sell. Lets see if Congress can help in this situation. Peanuts, cotton seed, and all oil bearing vegetables are cheaper than hey have ever been. Hogs, cattle, and dairy products are cheaper than they have been within the past thirty years. think the main reason for this is due to the large importa- ions of vegetable oils into this country duty free. The vege- ble oils that come into this country duty free come from, nd through, the Philippine Islands. Why doesnt Congress free the Philippine Islands? We ok over the Philippine Islands. thirty-three years ago as act of pholanthropy. We were going to keep them until hey were capable of self-government, and then turn them oose, The Filipinos want their independence. They know hat they are being commercialized. Sooner or later, if this ountry does not free the Philippine Islands, we will be in- volved in a terrible war. If the Philippine Islands were freed, price of peanuts, cotton seed, hogs, beef, and dairy woducts would go up. If the Philippine Islands were freed, ese large importations of Ear oils would not come this country duty free. Suppose you write your Generating on this. I received a letter this morning from Mr. 8. Wallerstein, Manager. of e Farmers Gin Company, Edison, Ga. He also enclosed a pping from the fArHiers of his county to demand that their The reason that. cotton be covered in cotton and not jute. He also stressed c the point that fertilizer plants and peanut mills should use cotton sacks instead of jute for their products. At the same time, I received a letter from Mr. Thomas Oxnard, Vice- President of the Savannah Sugar Refining Corporation, to- gether with a circular, calling on the housewives and merchants to demand that sugar be put in cotton sacks in- stead of jute and burlap. Jute takes the place of 3,000,000 bales of eottog. annually ey in the United States. What is the great surplus of cotton that they say we have right here in the United States? It started off in August at 9,000,000 bales. If we had a prohibi- tive tariff rate on jute, this 9, 000, 000 bale surplus would have been wiped away in three years. What is going to be the | surplus next August? Are we still going to allow jute to. come into this country duty free? Are we going to tell our cotton farmers to curtail and quit work, and encourage the | farmers and workers of India to continue to ship jute into our country without paying any form of tax to our Ove ernment ? . Write your Congressman to. get a prohibitive tariff ee a on jute. J+ Congress has made a pretty good: start in one directions There have been two bills introduced in the House.to abolish | the Federal Farm Board, both by Georgia Congressmen. | One bill has been introduced. in the Senate to abolish the | Federal Farm Board. If this Congress succeeds in abolish- ing the Federal Farm Board and freeing the Philippine Islands, and putting a prohibitive tariff on jute, it will go a long ways towards restoring the land values of this country and putting the farmer back in the market as a purchaser. If this is done, we will not have so many jars sitting around for pennies for the unemployed. NOTICE TO ALL BONDED WAREHOUSES If you have any cotton in your warehouse that is being held by : : parties who borrowed money from the Farm Seed Loan office at Washington, D. C., be on the watch-out for agents of the Cotton Co- | Ops who are going around over the country trying to force the farmers into transferring their cotton from your warehouse to them. You will see printed elsewhere in this paper an affidavit proving the way that - they are working around Athens to get this cotton in their possession. | ' December 1555 193i. = EUGENE TALMADGE.
