LL PRSD 5 9 oe ee Ser a%2 ws ea BE Eh VOL.14. STATE CAPITOL PUBLISHED BY THE BUREAU OF MARKETS A. D. JONES, DIRECTOR. ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1931 ~ Bang! Bang! Bang! Go Fetch _ Every hunter knows what the above exclamations mean! _ The hunting season this year on quail has been moved up to November 15. F ortunately or unfortunately the 15th this oe comes on Sunday. The quail will have one more days rest. _ Next Monday morning you will go out in the woods and hear a little of the above talk, especially if we have a light rain between now and Sunday. A hear various reports about the supply of quail in Geor- gia. Some people tell me that on account of the dry weather we will not have any quail, that it was so dry during the spring that there wasnt any water for the young birds and they perished to death. Others will tell you that the fox hunters have quit catching foxes. They will.run them for fun, and import fox, and the foxes have become so numerous that they have eaten up the quail. Of course, I do not want to get. any fox hunters mad with me, but I imagine anything that would eat a chicken would eat a quail. Dont you believe that an old fox would visit a covey of quail and eat one every night, after he had located them, until the whole covey would be gone? I believe these _ quail would taste as good to a fox as they do to us. I will tell you one thing that I know that does eat quail every month in the yearwild house cats. Watch out for these wild house cats when you are in the woods and kill every one you see. After these cats catch all the quail they can find, they will slip around and catch your chickens. Lets dont go to shooting fox, but lets insist on all of the - fox hunters catching the fox and killing him when they hunt. It wont do for foxes to get too thick in Georgia. They not only eat up quail and chickens but they eat young possums, rabbits and young coons. ss I was out riding yesterday afternoon after I left the office, near Atlanta, and we are having the same trouble with woods burning up here that they are in South Georgia. Of course, it is not as extensive, but these woods fires damage game more than hunters do. Of course, the damage that they do to the land and timber cannot be estimated. Lets create a sentiment all over the state against these fires, so that verybody will put down anything else they are doing to stop and put them out. There is nothing to that old gag about fires killing snakes. In the winter all snakes go down in the ground where the fire wont reach them. Leave a few birds in every covey and you will find more covies in the same places next year. Kill all the wild house cats you see on your hunting trips and encourage the fox hunters in your neighborhood to catch these foxes as well as yun them. If they do not bring in the dead fox, tell them | their dogs are no good and this reflection on their dogs will _ make them bring in these foxes. oS Lets take care of our game in Georgia. The supply of |. game has steadily increased in the last eight or ten years. Obey the game laws of the state and this will keep a supply of game here for the coming generation to enjoy. Last week I went out possum hunting over in Cobb Coun- ty. I made the great mistake of going out with my dog before I got acquainted with him. I just had him brought up that day from Macon County. me When we reached the hunting grounds, near the river, over in Cobb County, I took the dog out of the car, took off {| his collar and chain. He looked around at me in disgust and started off up the road without even wagging his tail or tucking it either. Of course, this broke up the possum hunt because the star actor had deserted us for good. This wasnt { the dogs fault, because all good dogs are a little tempera-_ - mental and I should have gotton better acquainted with him by keeping him in the yard and feeding him good for several days before carrying him out to work. By the way, this dog that quit us in the woods is a black jf and tan hound with a split. in one ear. If you can get him to answer you at all, he will answer to the name of Trailer. If anybody finds him I will certainly appreciate your letting me know, as the nigger I got him from said He is a possum dog from his heart. | Listen here! Some of you old, mildewed, fogy men who think you are too old to play, try going out hunting with your-boys. You will find it will do you and your boys good and you will get better acquainted. : Take a pride in having a good dog. You know the remedy for a sorry dog is Cut his tail off right behind his ears. Mr. Engene Talmadge, Atlanta, Georgia. Dear Mr. Talmadge: a I just want to write to you about my seed loan and see if you could help me as well as others that have paid in full at 5-544c. My zeason for writing you is that you are closer connected with thisthanIam. | I was told that we would get _the surplus so I have paid it anyway. Now it is up to the seed loan to do what- ever is done. Of course I am not going to try to do anything but write them about. it. They could say I did not have to pay it when I did and IT could say that they did nothave to give 8c and above to the rest. oe Mr. Talmadge, I wish to mention this guano business. Last year and for several years in the past there has been too much difference be- tween the $18.50 cash price and the $25.00 time price. The law-makers ought to look into this as it is unfait when the farmer is beaten and kept down. I think if you will get in be- hind this matter it will se adjusted. Now = am just a little two by four farmer, writing this but. my feelings are worth as much to me as the rich pans is to him. Now I submit this Oo you in fairness and Inve to you and by fellowmen. : As ever yours. (Signed) J. E, BURSON Som
