AGRICULTURE =_/=HR COMMISSIONER sss PUBLISHED BY THE BUREAU OF MARKETS A. D. JONES, DIRECTOR. ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 29, 1931. STATE CAPITOL NUMBER 44 EEE RSs OE ea a MI NL te The American Mecindin cr wrote the following eeticde. as you will notice, September 30, 1930: THE AMERICAN MASTODON when 1 was a boy I went to the Atlanta Exposition in 1895. I remember in one of the buildings there was a giant skeleton that rep- resented an animal that roamed the plains of this country thousands of years ago. This was the skeleton of an animal of proportions so a large that he would have been 20 times as large as. an elephant that we now see. There are none of these Mastodons left today. The scientists, geologists and all the experts can tell us.exactly how this American Mastodon looked, how he acted, and what made him - disappear. How he lived, how he looked and how he acted is not par- ticularly interesting to us, but the theory of these experts as to how he was finally conquered and utterly destroyed is interesting. _ Do you know their theory as to how he was destroyed? ; They say that the little animals ate off this Mastodons feet. He was so large that a rat or skunk or weasel could gnaw at his back heels and. he could not whirl around and stop him quick enough. While he was trying to stop the little rodents that were working on _ his back heels others were attacking his front feet. The big old fellow was kept so busy fighting the little animals that he was finally con- quered and destroyed. Bully for the little animals when they got him! When this old Mastodon stepped on something like a cow, or - horse, or deer, there was nothing left but a greasy spot. He was too - pig and too strong for his neighbors. He ate up all the grass and drank up all the water from the other animals in dry times. In other words, he made them suffer by his Gargantuan appetite. . We have a different form of American Mastodons devastating the ~ - country today. They are in the shape of human beings. They have _not grown gigantic in physical statue, but they have developed into - titanic proportions in power legislated to them in the form of tariff > favors and combinations that amount to Trusts. These modern- day Mastodons have advanced the price of mule - shoes in the last 20 years from $3 a hundred pounds to $8 per hun- dred pounds. These modern-day Mastodons have advanced the price of an ordi- ey nary lantern in the past 20 years from 35 cents retail price to $1.40 retail price. I bought one last Saturday in MaRae at the Wilcos Hard- ~ ware Store. It cost me $1.40. I bought one when I was a boy, 16 -- years old, from Bramblett Brothers Hardware Store at Forsyth and . it cost me 35 cents. _ These modern-day Mastodons have fixed a system of laws in this country where the American manufacturer is protected and has a monopoly on American trade. These modern-day Mastodons have fixed a system of laws ane trade customs where they can hold that it is all right for them to manufacture @ mowing machine and sell it to an American farmer Bs Friers, 1b. Bi at - Eggs, Stags, Ib. - Hens, lb. . little rodents will eat ee your feet. for $120 and sell it io our neighboring fedaer in Mexico for $60. I am not talking about machines made in different places; I am talking about machines that are made in the same factory. Sell one to our blood and kin people of this country for practically twice as much as they sell it to a farmer in a foreign country. These modern-day Mastodons are so big and so strong they can > prove it is all right and sing out the logic. These modern-day Mastodons are now thwarting the efforts of the people to have manufactured and distributed to the farmer cheap fertilizer at reasonable prices. T could enumerate practically every article that is in your kitchen, your bedroom, your sitting room, your parlor, your tool room, and on all of these, these modern-day Mastodons have satisfied their Gar- gantaun appetites. These Mastodons are so large that it takes a fleet of automobiles for each one of them. Their average days work is about six hours a day and for this ey receive fifty to five hundred thousand dollars a year. : The pitiful part of it all is that the people who raise. the raw material out of which all the wealth is produced are being trod down by these monsters and are not receiving the cost of producing their raw products. Nine-cents-a- pound cotton, 90-cents-a-bushel wheat, 814-cents-a- pound hogs and 10-cents-a- pound tobacco are going to make women and children suffer this winter. These people that are going to suffer are awful little in the eyes of the Mastodons. T.o0ok out, Mastodons! History repeats itself! Too hungry, these RUGENE. TALMADGE. _ September 30, 1930. Last year cotton was 9 cents a pound, wheat 90 elite a bushel, hogs 8% cents a pound, tobacco 10 cents a pound. What about this year? Six-cent cotton, 40 cents a bushel for wheat, hogs 4.61 cents a pound and 5 cents a pound for tobacco. Remember the price of manufactured articles this year.is about as high as it was last. Every mail several letters reach my desk from hard-working faynas ers telling me how they have worked this year, what good crops they have made and how all the crop has gone to pay their debts and they . have nothing left for the winter. They state they havent sufficient clothing and no food. : I heard Huey Long, Governor of Louisiana, say something about starvation in the land of plenty. Is the American Mastodon the cause of ey : UGENE TALMADGE. October 27, 1931. z MARKET REPORT OF GEORGIA PRODUCTS Prevailing Wholesale Prices Oct. 27, 1931. Jordon, Dub=- lin, care Express Office. ; SOME DIRECTIONS FOR HOME | Butter MakingBy Mrs. Lawrence T. Mitchell, State Bureau of Mar- | kets.First, good butter can be made from clean milk only. Everything touching the milk must be washed thoroughly, then boiled, then kept in | the sun. It is better to churn cream than whole milk. A barrel churn is best, but whether churning whole milk or cream in any kind of churn, observe the following: (a) Churn before milk or cream becomes too sour; it may be chftrned sweet if right temperature is used. (b) Dont guess at temperature. Buy a dairy thermometer (cost 50c). (c) Never pour warm or cold wa- ter into the milk to change the tem- perature. > (d) Never keep the churn in the bedroom. : When necessary to color,.add about | 20 to 30 drops of butter color to a gallon of milk. Take your 50-cent thermometer and when temperature reaches 58 to 60 degrees. churn. It will take 30 to 40 minutes for butter to come. Pour off milk as soon as particles of butter are about the size of a small pea, then churn the but- or in a wash water of the same tem-. perature of butter milk. Use about a heaping tablespoonful of fine table salt to each pound of butter. Mold in brick-shape and wrap in parch- ment butter paper. : : Putter made by these directions should sell on the Atlanta market.
