FARM LAND EDITION | ax = GEORGIA 7 (ase) AGRICULTURE AARKET BULL COMMISSIONER: PUBLISHED BY THE BUREAU OF MARKETS A. D. JONES, DIRECTOR. STATE CAPITOL ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15, 1931. Home Brew Fertilizer y This year the Department of Agriculture sold tags for 684,855 tons - of commercial fertilizer. There are three major plant foods in fertilizerphosphoric acid, nitrogen, and potash. The phosphoric acid is made principally from ground phosphate rock treated with sulphuric acid. The nitrogen is principally derived from sulphate of ammonia, cyanamid, nitrate of soda and tankage. Potash, of course, comes principally from muriate of potash, manure salts and kainit, which comes from Ger- many and France. - - Figuring the fertilizer that was bought in Georgia this year at $25 per ton, it figures $17,121,100 that was spent in this state for _ fertilizer alone this year to October 1. Lets see if the cotton crop made in Georgia this year will pay for this fertilizer1,300,000 bales of cotton at $22 a bale, which is about the average price for a bale after we have paid for the ginning, bagging and ties, would be $28,600.000. In other words, the farmers of Georgia are giving over half of their cotton crop this year for commercial fertilizer. Practically 100 per cent of all of this fertilizer used in Georgia was - shipped into the state from other states and from across the ocean. The nitrate of soda came from South America. The potash came | from Germany and France, the fish scrap and Omega tankage came from Norfolk, Va.; Jacksonville, Fla.; Mobile, Ala.; Chicago and other remote sections. The phosphoric acid came from Florida, South Carolina and Tennessee.: - The railroads collected their present war-time freight rates from hauling this fertilizer into Georgia. This is a form of hauling that the trucks have not taken over to any great extent. Fertilizer mate- rials are still hauled on railroads. Is it wise for the farmers of Georgia to continue to send all these - millions of dollars out of the state for fertilizer every year? We have the best opportunity to stop this flow of gold out of the state this year _ that we have had in many years. & Cotton seed are cheaper than I have ever known them to be. The _ price varies from $5 to $10 a ton for seed to the farmer. a -. Last week I wrote an article in the Bulletin suggesting that you _ keep your seed at home. There is one other suggestion that I want - to make. Be sure to put them in a house where they will keep dry. See that there are no cracks where the rain will blow in on them. Seed will go to the bad quicker by getting wet in a house than they will anywhere -else. Cotton seed are valuable as a food. The oil generally controls the price of cotton seed. At present cottonseed oil is very cheap. We get anywhere from 800 to 1,000 pounds of cottonseed meal out _ of every ton of seed. If ail of the cotton seed made in Georgia this MARKET REPORT OF GEORGIA PRODUCTS Prevailing Wholesale Prices Oct. 18, 1931. Always Subject to Variation. Atlanta. Macon. Savannah. Augusta, Columbus. Of course, the full amount of cotton seed is never ground into meal. Some of it is used for planting and other purposes. You have four months to figure on your fertilizer for another year. If you take care of your cotton seed you may have the oppor- tunity to sell a ton of cotton seed for a good deal more than a ton of commercial fertilizer will cost you. If the price of seed does not go up I believe you will again have the opportunity to swap those seed on an even basis for cottonseed meal. If you can make a trade like this I would rather use one ton of cottonseed meal for fertilizer than any other fertilizer I know of. It will show on your land for three years. During the next few months the farmers of this state could do no better work than to rake the woods. Get all the woods mold you can haul out and put it on your land, bed your stable and lot with it. If you get the right kind of trade on your seed your cottonseed meal and this fertilizer from your lot will be all the fertilizer you will need to make a crop next year. If we could have had an extra session of the Legislature I think one of the best things it could have done would have been to put a tax of about $25 per ton on nitrate of soda. It is foolish for Georgia and any other Southern State to be sending a stream of gold out of our states every year across the ocean for potash and nitrogen when we have it right here in our own states. Of course, I am a firm believer in the fact that if all of the states had passed the Long plan of not planting any cotton in 1932 we would now be getting about three times as much for our cotton and cotton seed as we are now getting, but it seems that we could not get this legislation. I hope that this law will be enacted for 1933. It is the only plan that is going to permanently restore the worth of the land in this country. Whenever we once observe the Sabbatical year on our principal money crop we will automatically go on doing it every seven years. This is the only plan we will ever fall upon to really catch up and get ready for farming. But so much for leg- islation. The great job is with the farmers themselves, and the secret of it is in taking care of our, cotton seed. If we do that and get the worth of them, we can dodge sending over $17,000,000 out of this state next year for commercial fertilizer. If we follow this we will not only save over $17,000,000 for Georgia but we will have better fertilizer and will permanently build up our soil. Our present way of fertilizing our | crops is a gradual depletion of the fertility of the soil. It is not against the law to have home brew fertilizer. EUGENE TALMADGE, October 13, 1931.
