oe DEPARTMENT OF [ |, PUGENE TALMADGE, i GEORGIA. (ARKET BULLE PUBLISHED BY THE BUREAU OF MARKETSA. D. J ee ioe | oo STATE CAPITOL ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, JANUARY 22, 1931. : ing portions of his farm that are not profitable. = - _Aereage Reduction And Ferfilizer = oA, { - About this time every year you will hear a whole lot of talk from farm leaders about reducing the acreage in cotton. A little later on, when they dont get a good prie for peaches, peanuts and _ watermelons, they will then talk that the acreage should be reduced on these products. The talk of pee reduction in cotton has al- : _Teady started this year, ; The onde are already full of idle peale. I get ee every day from tenants saying that they want to get a place to arm this year. I also have farmers to call in persoy in the office every day, _ wanting me to tell them of some place where they can get a job on the farm, either as share cropper or wage hand. One. just left the fics: I did not know where to tell him to go. It looks the farmers are taking advice and reducing acreage. : ! . } , I made a statement a little over a year ago that any talk of acreage reduction was un-American. I was called on this statement by some of the papers. What I meant by saying that*talk of acreage reduction beingun-American was that it would put a whole lot of families in the - road, out of a job. That is exactly what it is doing. What are we going to do. with all of these unemployed families -who were formerly good tenants and good croppers? A lot of them are suffering from lack of clothing and food. I dont know whether we are still sending money to the Armenians and other way-off beg- ging countries or not, but there is certainly room right here in Geor- gia for all the charitable work that the people in Georgia can do. Just before dictating the above sentence, I was interrupted, and an- ~ other fellow called, hunting for any kind of a job he could get. He had an honest face, and was a strong, healthy looking man. So much for the side of acreage reduction being un-American. Now, for ie farmers side of it. On practically ev- _ ery farm there is some acreage that should lay out. The old Mosaic law of letting the land lay idle every seventh year should be prac- _ticed. When you let land lay out, if it is properly terraced, it im- proves in fertility. My suggestion would be on acreage reduction, to let at least one-seventh of your acreage lay out this year, and total absence of any fertilizer would produce around a seven or -tilizer that you can.. The.farmer should stop work. continue this every year. stop the washes on it. you will be able to properly cultivate. Before you turn the land out, be sure to Dont try to break up and plant more than FertilizerWhat is the price going to be? . I wrote an editorial in the Bulletin last fall, pointing out that the = eight-million bale crop. I this was rigidly followed, the farm prob- lem in the South would be solved. The sad part of it is that we are not going to do it. We have been educated to use all of the fer-. tilizer that we could possibly buy and haul out, and then apply all | sorts of top dressing to the crop. This kind of education was wrong. We should have been taught to use just as little fertilizer as was necessary to stimulate the crop. After all, commercial fertilizer is not a soil builder. It is a stimulant and tood for the crop ane is planted that year. . x ie -You know, we got into the habit of buying fertilizer on a cred- ae it in Georgia so that a lot of the farmers would not even clean out the horse stables. Lets quit that. Use all of the home raised fer- Use woods mold and leaves as much as you can ~ put out. Lets cut down on the fertilizer bill as much as we can. Yesterday aternoon I came up on the train from Scotland, Ga. tne to Macon. I was sitting in the smoker with some typical business men. Of course, they all got to talking about hard times and the condition of the farmer. The brightest looking business man in the crowd said that if the farmer would stay at home and work~-at his business intelligently as other business men had to do, he could make some money at farming. He seemed to be addressing his re- marks to me. It did make me a little mad. I finally told him that the pity of the thing was that he honestly bs Haves that statement, and a great majority of the business men in this country were rue like him. What would a merchant think if I should tell him that if- he would come down early every morning, clean up his store, stay . on his job, be very punctual and polite to his customers, he could y make money by selling all of his goods at ten percent below cost 24 That is exactly what that business man s remark meant about the farmer. Play close to the shore this year. The former must solve ie own problem. Gold Brick agents are numerous. Watch out: now, for they are going to have all sorts of schemesto rope you in this. year. Williamson, Lambert, Ga. | CORRECT POULTRY FEEDING A great many people believe that by selecting proper rations and finding the proper feeding method, they will solve all the problems of poultry pro- duction. Unfortunately feeding is not a panacea for all the ailments in the poultry industry. It is but a part of poultry management and must be pre- ceded by correct breeding. 4 It. is folly to feed fowls incapable of production, on the best of rations. Life reacts to proper and improper feeding, regardless of whether it be plants, birds, animals or human beings. While the method of reproduction is some- what different, poultry is not essen- tially different from other kinds of living things so far as its use of feeds is concerned. Egg production is merely the job of producing in a container, what might be considered the entire nourishment _ for the development of the embryo. This means that we must have a com- nelte ration if we are going to produce eggs that, in themselves, will be per- fect. This is the problem of feeding. We must think of the egg as much as s Sea ee 9 Mane + ad a oft < REX 7 SS t cage Jeneeey 2, y981._ we. do of the hen. The present. stand- ad. of egg production is highly artifi- 1. We are producing birds that are equired to reproduce themselves from 50 to-250 tmes a year. They draw on - their body reserve when the food sup- y is insufficient, in order that they may continue doing what is normally This means that if we vale not have the hens storage battery well charg- ed and well supplied with what her eges will demand of her, there will be tendency. to let? up in producing a factory food supply inside-of the shell, resulting in lower hatches, - hatches, and inferior eggs for hu- man consumption. If we did not have uch a high standard of of egg produc- tion, it would be much easier to secure eggs and we would have less mortality a our flocks. This high standard re- eS much better feeding than we used to think necessary. One of the most important things is he question of ttotal consumption or total intake. The more a hen lays, the more she must* eat, and the more she consumes of the right feed, the more}. she can lay. High producers, eat. more. d than low producers, and_ there- for the smart poultryman will do ev= erything within his power to keep _eonsumption to the very. maxi- producing - hens are very. tem- ) nental. The. feeder must - cater . their appetites, partly by meth- ; feeding and also by making the ation palatable. The feeding of a. moist fattening mash at noon will in- e consumption and help main- tain body weight. Feeding cracked corn instead of whole corn. offering germinated oats and chopped alfalfa moist or dry), will all aid in keeping heavy laying pullets from losing appe- tite and boy. weight. Allied atewe e present low average of the Na- tions dairy cows is a serious handi-. cap to consumer as well as to pro-| ducers of dairy products, says the Bureau of Dairy Industry, ~ United States Department of Agriculture. Be- cause of the low production per cow, pel dairy farmers are working for a@ very low wage and are actually feeding their cows at a loss. With fewer cows and a higher average production per cow the net profits of the average dairy farm could. be greatly increased. It is estimated that the average yearly production per cow of the 22,500,000 milk cows in the United States is 4,600 pounds of ox containing 180 ee of butter- IRMEN CHASE BIRDS; KILL THEM ON WING en. hunting, keep one foot ~ on: ound. ALASKAN WARDEN JUNKS DOG SLED FOR AIRPLANE | The fee of the field an teds of the air in Alaska are being protected by a sky-flying game warden. -Recent- jy Warden Sam O. White, employed ;by the Alaska Game Commission, bought. a two-seated monoplane and learned to fly it.. He plans to use the ane in official patrol work, says the iological Survey of the United States Department of Agriculture. : | It may be a far cry from dog team| and sled to airplane, but Mr. White will fly over many routes that he could traverse otherwise only with a dog team. The plane will save him many days of arduous work. There are numerous places suitable for land- ing in Alaska, but there are no roads in many parts of the Territory. Mr. White will carry on his ground work in the general region of a landing place, using this as a base of opera- ons, and then move on to another point in his. district. ~ PROTEIN.
