VOL. 14. + DEPARTM ENT 9 oe. ~ PUBLISHED BY THE BUREAU OF MARKETS A. D. JONES,. DEEGTOE STATE CAPITOL _ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, JUNE 25, 19381. at A few weeks BES. there appeared in ins papers an announcement - of a general plan of all the railroads to request a 15 per cent increase - in freight rates on all commodities. Whew! Reckon will they get it? f If they do get it we should abolish the Interstate Commerce Com- mission and our several State Rail Road Commissions, if they sanc- thon= 1b. One of the greatest contributing causes to the present economic condition of the farmers of this country is the high cost of trans- portation. The average freight charges for hauling a car of watermelons to the northern markets $175. The railroads do noteload the car. The railroads do not bed the car. The railroads do not unload the car, But for thir service of hauling the car on an average of 36 hours they re- ceive about four times as much as the farmer receives for the car- load of watermelons and the farmer has to stow them, bed them and load them. The farmer has worked to grow these melons about six months in the year. Whe railroad merely pulls them on an average of 36 hours and they even demand the freight in advance or a bond for the freight. I have just returned from a hearing before the Georgia Rail Road Commission for the increase of rates on inter state shipments of ap-- ~ ples. It developed in that hearing that you could ship apples from Ore- gon to Atlanta, Georgia, almost as cheap as you can ship them from Cornelia, Georgia, to Savannah, Georgia. One is a haul of about 300 miles, the other is a haul of about 3,000 miles, Where is the logic in this? Where is the justice? : : Get your trucks. Every farmer does not have to have one but get one in the community and use it jointly. Haul your guano. Haul everything else on it. Keep it RUBY This is the only way pee can fight back. For the past week I have peer bombarded BH, iiecraue letters, phone calls and personal interviews about so many small peaches be- _ ing pushed on the market. Of course no ruling can make peaches larger. Too many small peaches will depress the price so much that good peaches will not sell _ for cost. Under the standardization act it is my. duty to place size require- ments on different grades of peaches. I have just placed the following size requirements: Early Rose, U. S. Fancy & U.S. No. 1, Minimum size 1 5-8 inches, U. S. No. 2, no size requirements. Hileys, aS: Fancy and U. S. No. 1, Minimum size 1 3-4 \ an : Rates, Pa and Mountains , - inches, U. S. No. 2. no size requirements, a Elbertas, Was. Fancy and=-U.. | S.c Nox}; Minimum size, Ni *-inches, U. Ss. No. 2, no size requirements. Hales, U.-S. Fancy and U.S: No.1, Minimum size, 2 inches, U.S: No. a no size requirements. All peaches not ne the above grades shall be labeled _ Com- ae mercial Pack. Last Saturday I dvove from, Atlanta through Gwinnett, Hall, Habe ae ersham and Rabun Counties to Clayton, and went on ue to Moun- tain City. . The farmers of the northeast section of the State are hard hit by: the drouth. In a great many places they did not get a stand of cot- ton. You can see fields of it where vou can almost count the stalks. x They have been plowing it, hoping that it will come up. Around the first of July is awful late for cotton to come up though if you expect to make a crop. Do not quit your crops too soon, down we areall inclined to think it is time to lay by. It is a mighty good idea to work cotton until the bolls are mature at the bottom. . : If you are troubled with sand spurs or nut grass be sure to give your cotton one or two extra plowings and. a good hoeing right at the = last. worked. This is encouraging. The seasons will take care of them- selves. Ever since I have been in AtlantaI have heard different people from Habersham, Rabun, etc., tell about the Blue Ridge Mountains of : north Georgia. ed of the poems of Switzerland. There is a good road up to Tallulah Falls and to Clayton. Some of you folks from the level fields and flat woods: of South Georgia take a trip up into these mountains. ; Look at the sunset across Lakemont. Look over the terrible gorge, where Tallulah Falls used to be, at sunrise. See the blue mist on the - horizon across the mountains as far as the eye can reach and you will find out where they get the name of Blue Ridge. Some living in these mountains! Oh, how you can sleep fanned by the fresh mountain breeze! Don't sleep all night. Be sure to see that gorgeous moon hanging like a silver slipper between two black peaks. RFD 1. - NORTHERN SEED OATS OF NO VALUE IN GEORGIA Georgia Farmers are Warned of Sus- ceptibility to Rust and-to Winter Killing in Spite of this Seasons Prospects Results of Many Years Trials Cited The unusually .cool spring with abundance of moisture andno-~ rust has favored the growth of northern oats so that in a few cases where far- mers have planted this type of oats, they are beginning to head and are looking good this season. It is likely however, that dry weather gr rust will ruin them before harvest, but some farmers do not realize this. This seasons showing has started a small boom in northern seed oats. Some northern seedsmen are taking advantage of this Situation and are now trying to sell northern seed oats in the state, without ae until the oats are harvested. The oats grown in the North eles to an entirely different species from those grown in the South. All nor- thern oats belong to the spring sown type and will not stand our winters. They usually have a vigorous vegeta- the past ten years. Clarks, ; PR. plants, State insp. $1 M; $3.75 : 25c; 90c M; Leading var. collard 200, _ Thursday, June 25, 19 tive growth and are very leafy. Ofte this makes them look good early the season but it also makes them ve susceptible to damage from dry vy ther. They are also very suseeptible to the type of rust and pete ee: the South. The Gorgia Experiment Sta has conducted what is probably largest cereal nursery in the South During this hundreds of northern oats have been planted and not one has proved value. It is not uncommon to ge yields that do not equal the seed sow Other southern experiment stations have had the same experience. .There are only two types of | oats suitable for sowing in Georgia. is the Red Rustproof, which incl varieties like Hundred Bushel, Apple Bancroft, etc. The other is Fulghu which is from three - to ten days ar lier. Do: not be fhiciena into growing no. thern oats because they look go heading, or even if they do well season. There is not one chance no thousand that a northern spring o0 adapted to a long cool, moist se of the North will be of any value Georgia. Ss . R. P. Bledsoe, Agronomist Georgia Experiment Statio Experiment, Georgia. PLANT BREEDERS FIND | -DROUTH-RESISTANT COR) Last. summers drouth delayed th corn-breeding programs carried 0 jointly by the United State De ment of Agriculture and several of State experiment stations, from one three ygrs, but it enabled thos charge of the work to compare va: Ou strains of corn under drouth condi tions and to bring to light pene information. The Bureau . of Plant Industry re= ports that one or more strains of corn at the various stations withstood the lack of moisture and the temperatures of 106 degrees F. and upward better than other strains. In some cases r sistance was not great enough to be value; other gtrains, however, silke and tasseled with little: or no ap ar ent damage. oe Dark Green Lancaster, a -self-fer tilized strain developed at Ames, Io had shown much promise in favorabl corn years. Last summer the str demonstrated its ability to thrive der drouth. conditions as well. A OU 3,000 plants of crosses having Green Lancaster as. one parent included in the tests at Ames.- Non of these plants had any of the to leaves burned and only 12.6 per cen had burned tassels. In contrast, 37 per cent of the plant of Krug, the best of 12 commercia. leaves. The 10 crosses of Dark Greet Lancaster averaging a yield of 53.5 pe acrefi in comparison with 37.5 bushels for Krug. To what extent strains adapted sa unfavorable conditions may be expect- ed to yield well during normal season is a question of importance to farmer. and plant breeders. The only answe to. thise question is that crosses. Pe Dark Green Lancaster have been te ed at Ames for the last four years. It 1927 and 1928 these crosses were firs and second in their groups, in~ 1929 they were fifth, and in 1930 they er first. In each year they were m productive than the best omnee varieties U. S. D. A,
