GEORGIA KET "BULLE PUBLISHED BY THE BUREAU OF MARKETS A. D. JONES, poe Me STATE CAPITOL ATLANTA, GEORGIA. THURSDAY, JUNE 11, 1931. AH. NORTHINGTON, PRESIDENT OF THE AMERICAN COTTON CO-OPERAT- IVE ASSOCIATION, INDICTED IN MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA, FOR BEING 2 $420, ,000. 00 SHORT IN HIS ACCOUNTS Along the first of April of this year, letters were mailed out all over Georgia by the Georgia Cotton Growers Co-operative Association, ad- -vising the members of the Georgia Co-ops that the American Cotton Co-operative Association was going to sell out the Georgia farmers cot- ton if-he did not pay in more margin. When I saw these letters, I could not understand what the American Cotton Co-operative Association had to do with our cotton. In the Market Bulletin of April 16th, I put this question in an edi- torial: Who is the American Cotton Co-operative Association. I also asked these two questions: Who is E. F. Creekmore? Where does he _ hail from? . Upon recent investigation, I am advised that the American Cotton Co-operative Association is the head, or parent and interlocking cor- _ poration of all the different state cotton co- -operative associations. In other words the American Cotton Co-operative Association is the big gun that tells the Co-ops of Georgia when they must close out an ac- count. I use the words, when they must close out an account pur- posely, for a great deal of the cotton that the Georgia farmers thought was being held, went to the mills last fall, and the only thing that they held was the report and the day on which they wanted it sold. The next question Who is E. F. Creekmore?I am advised that E. F. Creekmore hails from Fort Smith, Arkansas, and was a cotton buyer in Fort Smith, Ark., prior to his connection with the American Cotton Co-operative Association. Mr. E. F. Creekmore is now the Gen- eral Manager of the American Cotton Co-operative Association. Hon. Kenneth McKellar, U. S. Senator from Tennessee, advises me that Mr. E. F. Creekmores salary is $75,000.00 per year. Mr. E. F. Creek- more and our distinguished citizen and president of the United. States, Herbert Hoover, receive the same annual salaries. Talk about a big, hefty boll weevil, E. F. Creekmore is devouring a lot of the farmers cotton. The only difference between him and the boll weevil is that the boll weevil eats it in the square, and Creekmore patiently waits for you to work it, pick it, gin it, and send it in. But what has all of this to do with the title of A. H. Northington? A. H. Northington is the president of the American Cotton Co- operative _ Association. He is now indicted in. Montgomery, Ala., for an alleged - the headlines of the paper it comes out that Farmers are losers. is the Federal Farm Board going to do about this? What is Congress going to see that they do? These are pretty staggering sums that are June 9, 1931. shortage of $420,000.00 of the American Cotton Co-operative Associations and the Alabama Farm Bureau Cotton Co-operative Associations funds. The accounts in the paper state that $120000.00 of the money is the Alabama Co-operatives, and $300,000.00 is the accounts of government money which covers accounts of other states co-operatives. ane in What being taken out of the cotton of the South. How long will it last? I read in todays Atlanta Constitution that Carl Williams, cotton member of the Federal Farm Board, says that a meeting of the Cotton Stabilization Corporation and the American Cotton Co-operative As- sociation will be held in Washington on June 25th. He did not state that they were going to investigate the matter above referred to, but that at this meeting they would decide about when they would sell the cotton that they say they are holding. I wish that the Federal Farm Board at this meeting would find out if they are really holding cotton or holding account sales. Mr. Williams also stated in todays Constitution that the various cot- ton co-operative Associations and the Stabilization Corporation were holding a little more than 3,000,000 bales of cotton. Again, the ques- tion, Are they holding the actual cotton, or the account sales? Mr. Carl Williams also stated in todays Constitution that the bulk of this cotton was held in Galveston, Texas, Houston, Texas, and New Orleans, La. That is a long way to ride a little bale of cotton from Carroll Georgia, is it not? Why ride it so far? It would be pretty hard fora farmer from Georgia to go to Galveston, Texas, and check up to see if his cotton was actually there.~ The sooner Congress has a show-down with the Federal Farm <3 Board and all of these stabilization, holding, selling, and co- ~operative associations, the better off the farmer will be. I accidently made a statement. once that if about 90 percent of the farmers friends were just killed off, the farmer could take pretty goad | = i care of himself. The more experience I have in delving into these boys __ who draw such high salaries, the more satisfied I am that my statement is true. EUGENE TALMADGE.
