DEPARTMENT 0f EU GEN E TALMADGE. AGRICULTURE ...= ~COMM1SSIONER* PUBLRHED 2 BY THE BUREAU OF MARKETS A. D. JONES, DIRECTOR. STATE CAPITOL ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, MAY 28, 1981. i The Cost of Georgia Cotton \ On May 16th there appeared in the Atlanta Constitution an article, _ with big headlines, stating the following: COTTON CAN BE GROWN SUCCESSFULLY IN GEORGIA AT A COST OF a MORE ae FIVE CENTS PER POUND. ' Of course, I was shocked a good deal when I read this article. I - read it in full. Specialist at the State College of Agriculture. He was basing his statement from Mr. E: C. Westbrook, Cotton Specialist at the State Col- lege of Agriculture. He was basing his statement on five-acre contests conducted in 1930. Mr. Westbrook gave the names of the ones growing the cotton, the amount. produced per acre, and the amount received for the cotton. Mr. H. L. Williams, President of the Swift Manufacturing Com- - pany, Columbus, Ga., sent me a clipping from the Journal of Commerce, -- New York City, carrying the same article that appeared in the At- lanta Constitution. My attention was also called to this article by nu- merous other citizens of the State. Such statements as this in the press of our country are damaging to the cotton growers of the United States. I do not doubt the test reports given by Mr. E. C. Westbrook, but he should bear this in mind: That these test plots were put on the best five acres that could be found in the sections where they were planted. -Mr. Westbrook should also bear in mirid that those five-acre contest plots do not represent the average or normal way that we farm. I have seen some five-acre contest: patches that did not exceed the average cotton patch in the section where it was grown. Nothing was said about these five-acre patches They pick out a few exceptional five-acre pat- ches and publish it to the world that cotton can be grown at a profit % i with a cost of little over five cents per pound. I am writing this article to challenge the statement of Mr. West- brook. If cotton can be grown at the present time at a cost of little more than five cents per pound, then we have a bunch of incompetent It was a. statement fran Mr. E. C. Westbrook, Cotton drones growing cotton. Surely, Mr. E. C. Westbrook did not mean to. convey the information that it is practical or possible for the great cot-_ ton farmers of the United States to grow cotton as it was grown on a few, and an exceptionally few, five-acre contest patches. Naturally, every farm has a few acres of finely built-up land. This oe spot will grow much better crops than the average of the field. You cannot take the yield of this spot and say what crops can be made for. I am challenging the statement of Mr. Westbrook for the reason : that it would convey the wrong impression in the sections of the United States where they will allow his statement to go unchallenged. I have made some careful estimates on the average cost of cotton grown under present conditions in Georgia. I do not believe that there ~ is any profit in Georgia cotton for less than 20 cents per pound. I wish Be to state further that I am in line with Mr. Geo. B, Terrell, former Com- His estimate on _ missioner of Agriculture of the great State of- Texas. the cost of cotton in Texas last year was a little over 20 cents per ee I think that Mr. Terrell and I are correct. . If you will look on the records, you will find that thie farm lands of Georgia and Texas are heavily mortgaged. This bears out our state- ment that they have not been making a profit. If they, had, Lamers se lands would not be covered in mortgages. I dont believe that Mr. Westbrook would take a contract to stow 500 acres of cotton at 15 cents per pound. I dont believe that he can do it and show a profit. If he can grow cotton at a profit for less than 10 cents per pound, he certainly is Heese a golden opportunity for making money. . You can rent land now very cheap. There is plenty of farm labor. L Lets see if Mr. Westbrook is game enough to tackle it. If he tackles it and shows a profit, it will be a service that he is rendering for the State OF Georgia, and a practical experiment that will convince all of us other. farmers of the State more than words. 5-26-31 EUGENE TALMADGE. FICIENCY OF COWS The ability of dairy cattle to absorb such minerals as calcium and phos- phorus does not seem to respond : the same treatments that apply other classes of animals. 4 We know that exposure of a great many animals and Human beings to the ultra-violet rays of the sun seems to influence the. assimilation of the mineral elements of the ration and mineral balance in the animal. Hewever, with dairy cows, especially heavy produc- _|ing cows in the early part of their lac- tation period little benefit has beet obtained in the assimilation of cal- cium and phosphorus by exposure to ultra-violet rays or to direct sunlight. On the other hand, towards the enc of the lactation period and especially where cows are out on good pasture, they seem to have the ability to ab- sorb calcium and phosphorus and build up the mineral balance in their systems provided sufficient minerals are supplied in the ration. A In a great many cases dairy cattle have been forced to depend entirely upon pasture during the summer months. Supplementing these pas tures with a reasonable supply of con- centrates properly balanced with good protein and some calcium and phos- phorus will help to maintain a more nearly perfect physical condition on the dairy cow and thereby enable her to go into the season ready for h winters work in better condition. If the greatest efficiency is to be obtained with any machine, that ma- chine must be kept in as nearly per- fect condition as possible at all times. The dairyman has made of the dairy cow, a milk manufacturing machine. Therefore, he should aim to keep this machine in as nearly perfect physical condition as, possible. Allied News Service.
