GEORGIA =MARKET * DEPARTMENT 9 EUGENE TALMADGE PUBLISHED BY THE BUREAU OF MARKETS A. D. JONES, DIRECTOR. BULL AG RICULTURE... COM MISSI ONERs STATE CAPITOL ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, MARCH 26, 1931. NUMBER ee states met here in Atlanta at the Henry Grady Hotel. Boy Beans, Biloxi, Wis ee 2.00 The Association for the On yesterday, March 23rd, delegates from all of the cotton-growing Out of the eleven cotton-producing states, six commissioners of agriculture were present. They were as follows: Hon. Harry D. Wilson, of Louisiana; Hon. J. C. Holton, of Mississippi; Hon. J. E. McDonald, of Texas; Hon. Earl Page, x of Arkansas ; Hon. J. W. Shealy, of South. Carolina, and myself. The _ other commissioners of agriculture who could not attend the meeting had representatives here. This meeting was called by Hon. Harry D. Wilson, Commissioner of - Agriculture from Louisiana, and he was elected President of the Asso- ciation. Hon. J. E. McDonald, Commissioner of Agriculture of Texas, was elected vice president; Mr. Harold C. Booker, of Columbia, S. C., was ~ elected Secretary-Treasurer, and Mr. S. Odenheimer, of New Orleans, - La., one of the greatest promoters of the cotton industry in the United : States, was elected Chairman of the Executive Committee. The membership fees in this ass ociation will be $1 per person, and we are soliciting nationwid memberships in the organization. We want. all who are interested in the further use of cotton in the United States _ to join this association. One of the main facts that was brought out was statistics furnished by Mr. Wilson that last year there was over $158,000,000 worth of jute imported into America. Mr. Wilson admitted that part of the lining of the suit that he was wearing on yesterday was made from jute. He also had an exhibit of cotton bagging and cotton fabrics for awnings and oo were made in a mill in New Orleans. These materials were beautifu The best exhibit, however, was by Miss Ouida Midkiff, of the A. & -M. College, Mississippi, who was dressed out and out in- cotton. She wore _ @ lovely suit of grey cotton. She even wore cotton stockings. Mr. Harry D. Wilson made the statement that it was a peculiar : thing that some man in Paris had to tell the world that one of the pre- vailing styles this year would be for ladies to wear cotton. I hope that the ladies will follow the lead of this beautiful young lady and ask for cotton goods. - Of course, we had representatives at the meeting of the jute indus- try. They tried to argue to us that you made about 26 cents per bale on cotton by buying jute covering instead of cotton. Of course, this is true, but what we are driving at is to get an extra demand and extra consumption of cotton that will raise the price of cotton anywhere from $10.00 to $25.00 per bale. I would like to see the ginners of this state order some cotton bagging. Our association will appear again at Washington and ask for a pro- hibitive tariff on jute. We did this last year. We will keep on. I be- lieve that we will finally get this prohibitive tariff on jute, because it is. better to. get an increased consumption for 3,000,000 additional bales ie right here in America than it is to decrease our acreage. As long as a protective tariff is a policy of this country, our raw | products must come in for their share. Mr. Wilson made a very signif- icant statement yesterday; he stated that in times of peace patriotism was just as essential as in times of war. If that $158,000,000 that is go- ing out of our country every year for jute was expended for buying more _ cotton, there would ais be quite as much poverty and desolation among our cotton farmers. . Increased Use of Cotton E received a clipping from one of the papers in Texas last week where there had been a shake-up in the Cotton Co-operative Association The Texas legislature considered a resolution to investigate of Texas. all of their transactions, The charges against the Co-ops of Texas were very similar to those against the Co-ops of Georgia. The Co-ops of Georgia, instead of being a help to the farmers, have been their greatest handicap. The way they have been running this. Association, farmers have lost money by shipping them their cotton. In making this statement, I am not taking into consideration the thousands - of dollars that. they. legally owe the farmers; but I am making the point- blank statement that the farmers would have received better prices if : Sees they had not shipped their cotton to the Co-ops. I am printing right here a letter which I received this morning: -<-Hateher: Ga. March 23, 1931. Mr. Eugene Talmadge, : Commissioner of Agriculture, Atlanta, Ga. Dear Mr. Talmadge: I have been reading your articies i regard to the Co-ops, and am writing you in behalf of my husband. He died the 10th of this month, leaving me with four little children, all under 10 years oe. and no one : to help me work for them. Now, he was a member of the first five-year contract. I dont know exactly how many bales he pooled, but about 25 or 30, or maybe more, and he told me a few days before he got sick that he wanted to write you as the Co-ops are behind with him about $30.00 or $40.00, and he got sick and died, so I thought I would write you and see if you could help me get back the funds. I am in need of it badly. I have some papers here in regard to it, and if it will be of any help will be glad to send them to you. Now, Mr. Talmadge, if you can assist me to get this, as my husband, A. L. Perkins, died, leaving me and the children alone, I will certainly appreciate it. Hoping to get a reply from you, and will thank you for all favors. Respectfully, (Signed) MRS. A. L, PERKINS. I have received hundreds of letters similar to the above. How can any organization that stands for the principles of right and justice refuse to pay this little grief-stricken widow and four orphans what is justly due a member of their Co-operative Association? Did ae we not hear something about the Golden Rule being the motto of the Georgia Cotton Growers Co-operative Association when it was being or- ganized: ALL THINGS THEREFORE WHATSOEVER YE WOULD THAT MEN SHOULD DO UNTO YOU, EVEN SO DO YE ALSO UNTO oa FOR THIS IS THE LAW AND THE PROPHETS, Matthew: I wonder if the Co-ops have failed to pay any of the salaries to their highly-paid officers and directors? Dont you suppose that they would do more than write letters? atone they get theirs, the widow should get hersTHATS CO-OPER- 3-24-31. * EUGENE TALMADGE. There are 34 different kinds of minerals and clays produced commer- cially and undeveloped properties al- ready located present a fine field of opportunity to investors. The value of Georgias minerals used for commercial purposes varies widely from year to year. They have reached as high as $19,000,000 a year. The deposits are so expansive that engineers state that if the entire ceramic industry moved to Georgia, the could supply its sedimentary kaolins, at the present rate of consumption, for the next 600 years. : The fame of Georgias marble and granite is world-wide. Their beauty and endurance have adapted them to many forms of construction, both for building and monumental purposes, and they are used extensively through- out the United States and in many foreign countries. : The use of Georgia marble as build- ing and ornamental stone has made such great gain within the past 40 years that the output of these quarries snow exceeds that of any other state with the exception of Vermont. The yearly output is valued at approximate- bly $3,000,000. In color, the stone varies eral output is the manufacturers of |} 1,687,654 | from white to almost black, a flesh col- or also being found. Tests of the phy- sical and chemical properties of Geor- gia marble demonstrate that its dura- bility exceeds that of any other marble | ranks close to marble in importance, now being produced. The most valuable marbles are those found in Pickens, Cherokee, Gilmer and Fannin counties, the belt running par- allel to the Louisville & Nashville rail- road from near Ball Ground, in Chero- kee County, north to the State line, a distance of more than 60 miles. At Tate, in Pickens county is located the largest marble plant in the State, operated by the Georgia Marble Com- pany, of which Colonel Sam Tate is president. Here is found a chrystalline marble that is used largely in buildings {and memorials, this stone being used in the erection of memorials to three | | former presidents of the United States, Lincoln, McKinley and Harding. The statute of Abraham Lincoln in the Lincoln Memorial at Washington is made of twenty-eight large blocks of Georgia marble, totaling approximate- ly 3,000 cubic feet. The statute weighs 175 tons. The Memorial, including the building and statute, erected at Niles, Ohio to the memory of former resident_ William McKinley is built entirely of Georgia Marble. The memorial at Thursday, March 26, 1931, Marion, Ohio, in which the body of for- mer President Warren G. Harding rests, is erected of Georgia marble. : The granite industry in Georgia the yearly output being valued at more than two million dollars. Granite is one of the most important and exten- sive building and monumental stones in the State. = Granite is found in an almost in- exhaustible supply in the Piedmont Plateau and big quarries are located in DeKalb, Elbert, Greene, Gwinnett, Rockdale, Newton, Hall, Hancock and other Georgia counties. One of the most interesting and the largest barren : granite masses in the United States is Stone Mountain in DeKalb county. PLANTS FOR SALE Imp. Porto Ricans, from vine cut. $1.50 M.
