Second-Hand Farm Machinery, Flower and Seed, Incubator and Ornamental Nursery Stock Monthly Supplement GEORGIA GE PARTMENT of ee CUGENE TALMADGE PUBLISHED BY THE RUREAU OF MARKETSA. D. STATE CAPITOL JONES, DIRECTOR ~ ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, JANUARY 1, 1981. _ Peavine Fay. No. 1. ner ton --,-20.00 The Federal Farm Board And Cooperatives Shortly before Christmag the United. States Senate wated $150. 000,- - 000 additional appropriation to the Federal Farm Board to be expend- . ed in doing, WHAT? All of the Boards activities through Co-.peratives so far have not helped the people who raise the farm products. Wheat, cotton, and ail staple products have gone down downdown, since they have been touched with their oe hand. Can we stand it much long er? _. I have pointed out the ieecilavitieg of the business taussastiods of the Georgia Cotton Growers: aa Association, that. no en- lightened people should put up wit. They are taking one cent per pound out of the cotton besides the expenses of handling. Lact call this a Reserve Fund. They stated . they were going to, pay this back at the end of the first five years. They have refused to: do so since 1926, but they are still takine this one cent reserve fund out of the members cotton. That one cent re-' serve is $5.00 per bale. New this is in addition to all expenses incurred in handling the cotton. They say that this one cent is a trust fund. it does not belong to them. They are keepinz it as.a reserve. They say they are going to give it back to you at the end of your contract. Their past dealings have proved that they do not give you back your - money. I wonder when thev handle cotton for cotton brokers whether they. extract this one cent reserve from their cotton or not. You know a lot of cotton buvers around over the State. buv cotton from the fa~m- ers and tren ship it to the Georsia Co-ops. Of course, any transac- tion of this kind doses not help the farmers because it is out of their hands. I wonder if the Cn-ops take this one cent reserve cut of the brokers cotton? I am inclined to think thev do notdo it, because they know that business men would not stand for it, but they think they can pull the weol over the evs of the averace. farmer and take that one cent out of his entton. Thev think thev can handle the money for the farmer better than he can handle it himself. However. thev dont handle. it. thev fust keep it dont think anvbodv is handline my aot Pee if they fake. it away from me and wont give it back to meatall. Tha nitifyl navt of 3t is that the Government is backing up this HIGHWAY POBBERY. I have written Senator Georee and Senator Farris and insi-ted that they call for an investication of the wav the Federal Farm Boards. muney is hene exnended down throuch the Cooperatives. TT paticead jn Montavs noners that the President of the Naticnal Farmers UWnicn nut it scnarely vp to Congress ta have an investica- tion of the wav the Federal Farm Board vas handling that money. That inseetliatitin aes Cot to come. ~ _._ I received a letter from a poor farmer last week. His ietter claced with this question, Am I compelled to do business with a firm that takes my money? Our Government is indirectly compelling this man to do business: with the Cooperatives that are taking his money and wont give it back to gine Rev. J. L. Halk a Methodist Minister of Ringgold, Geor gia, called to see me the other Shay and left a letter and a bill of sale on three bales of cotton that had just been handled by the Georgia Cotton Growers Cocp?rative Association for him. Elsewhere in this issue you will see his letter. Te The point about it that struck me was that after deducting all ex- penses for handling this cotton they then snagged him for $14.97. This< $14.97 was practically one third of a bale of: cotton. On the 28th of August this year there was held a great farm rally . at Chattanooga. Tennessee. Mr. Carl Williem:. the cott-n man of he . Federal Farm Board was there. Mr. Carl Williams made a very lonz. advisory talk. Fe finally boasted that the Federal Farm Beard was her, to stay. whether the farmers liked it or not. He aso boasted tat they \had accomplished a great deal more for the farmers in the first six than they had anticipated they would accomplish in three year What is the matter with that mans head? 5 aoe If his head is all right, what is the matter with ie how? one Doesnt he know that the past year has practically wrecked hey farming industry of America? Ido not think Mr. Carl Williams statement that the Farm Board | is here to stay is correct. Of course, he wants it to stav so be can keep his fat job and so he can ring in his henchman on good jobs. I won- | der how manv of them. could make a living on a two horse farm if it was given.to them? _ The farmer pays~ for all these jobs -you know. Let me tel you about another farm board that we had before the * birth of Christ. The Bacchanalia was the Farm Board of the Roman Empire. Lo- k as in your dictionary and vou will see that the word haz ecm- torn: to us. and now means to us in Enclish, a drunken orev of spendins. | I believe that the Bacchanalia hai more to do with wrecking the | Romen Empire than any other one cause. "When vou crush down the people that are prodncine the wea'th of land you are knocking at the foundation stone of your pitt ent. December 30. 1930. EUGENE TALMATGE.
