JONES, DIRE ona STATE CAPITOL t ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1980 ee ieee sae : NS fast Sriday afternoon Tt on down ak Savannah mith yaa John os Rourke, Jr., to Littse St. Simons Island. This island is owned by Mr, Phillip Berlszheimer, of New York City. On Friday. they had a deer drive. They did not shoct any of the deer, but tried to catch them to give to the Fish and Game Department. to be distributed in North - _ Georgia. _ They succeeded in driving nine deer into the trap. One Geer _ they caught out in the woeds. ES wasnt at the deer drive, but the parties told me that they had forty or fifty in the bunch. They stated that when they. drove the deer to the trap they turned around and - jumped over their heads. The ones that they finally. eo in ones ing into the trap followed some cows, & Saturday morning we went hunting. on the island. They placed about : - thirty of us along the road on stands, then turned joose eight dogs. We were given positive instructions not to shoot anything but. bucks, Ina very few minutes the dogs: struck and the deer began to run by the stands. - There were fourteen bucks killed on this one-drive. Here _ js the part that was news and. interesting to me. I knew. that we had / a lot of faun- colored deer: in. Georgia, especially on the islands around | the coast, but on this trip) I saw deer that were snow white, flack deer, and spotted deer, not faun, but grown spotted deer and elk. They also. had some of the large shaggy Eng:ish deer on this island, F didnt kill my buck. I had the usual alibi that 1 blooded ie and he ee _off into the bushes. . Mr. Berlszhelmer stated to. me that this great drove of dee which he has on the island is a development of the last ten years. He) has rigidly enforced the law. He has not allowed any does kiiled, and has not allowed, anyone to hunt out of season. If this were practiced | all over the state our game would be plentiful within a few years. ~ also noticed on the trip pack from | Little St. Simons to the landing = some of the banks of the streams -were _ completely gepiriad: of a oysters. Re There aware Sthe thick with o oyster. shelta I was talking to one of the natives of that country, and he said that where you had oysters you also had fish. They fecd on the oyster shells and also. run to the oyster beds when pursued, He said that when they hid in the shells the. larger fish would not at tempt to follow them becatise the} wou.d cut themiselves on the sharp shells. ln! Fish and Game De- partment is doing 2 great work on the and also see a of their work in the inland. Severe aN Mr. Berlazheimer, as stated above, Is ees New York City, He was bern in Germany and came to this country when he was seventeen . years old. He has made money enough to own an island in the Ocean, I had a long talk with him. He is a man of very fixed convictions. asked me if Georgia was acing anything in a general way io help t _ poor-people in the state. this winter. I asked him specifically what meant. He said, Well, is there any general program of road: puildin or public building that will give the poor employment? I stated oO ake that there was not. He asked if we. had . a systematic way checking up to find who deserved help in the rural district, I told him that we did not. He made this statement: that in New York City in times of distress the Government goes in for road building - public building - on a large scaie and in this way helps the poor. He also stated that the police on the beats in New York. City were oe ~ specific instructions to report | all worthy cases that need help. Thi : German looked at me and told me that it was very essential that the state look after this, not only from @ charitable standpoint but from a standpoint of the good of the government, 1 recely ie leiters every day from hard-working people who need some tind of employment. am powerless alone to help them. Shouldn't our welfare workers up some plan to our city and State officials that will help the poo: people this jwinter in es SS EUGENE. TALMADGE. November 25, 1980. eo a MARKET.
