VOL. STATE CAPITOL 13 ATLANTA, GEORGIA, PUBLISHED BY THE BUREAU OF MARKETSA. D. J ONES, DIRECTOR THURSDAY, OCTOBER 9, 1930. - city markets. TO HIS HONOR, THE MAYOR, AND CITY COUNCIL | "+6 > OF ATLANTA AND COMMITTEE: \ I noticed in the Sunday papers a statement by Mr. J. L. Me- Cord, President of the Produce Dealers of Atlanta, in which he ob- to Central Avenue and parking there for the purpose of selling their truck Shutts 3 e 1 investigated and found that they were having a meeting on this objection before the Council yesterday afternoon. I went down - to this meeting, and Council promptly passed an ordinance prohibit- ing these farmers and truck drivers from parking on Central Avenue _ from 6 P. M. until 7 A. M., effective November ist. 2 . In the vicinity of Central Avenue, farmers from all over Geor- gia meet with their farm products and sell it to merchants and other . ~ people who wish to buy. They also exchange their products with each other. A farmer from. South Georgia will have sugar cane, peanuts, and syrup and will exchange with the farmer from North Georgia for apples, cabbage and cider. The South Georgia farmers readily find a market for the North Georgia, products when they The main argument used in building good roads was that this would enable the farmers to better market his products and the ben- efit that would come to him from being in closer touch with the Stopping parkng on Central Avenue looks like ; a little matter but it means that they are stopping about 350 trucks that come into the city every night with fresh produce for the people of Atlanta. As soon as they find another place and congregate there the same howl will be raised about moving them to some other place. What Atlanta needs to do is to provide a central market square for the farmers to come in with their trucks. , Provide them with some accommodations, when they come in they are tired and when they get to Atlanta they would like to wash up and some of them want to change their clothes. Atlanta made an inviting gesture for the farmers to come to t & Atlanta with their wares when they built the Municipal Market. However, this has degenerated into nothing but a Poe for rent for the different stores of the city. \ _ The farmers do not want a store. What they want to do is to sell their stuff right from the truck, fresh to the buyers of the city. This is the coming business for the farmers of Georgia. ta be the'first one to take the lead to assist them. Give them the in- vitation to come here rather than worry them with restrictions. Get adequate parking space provided for them at some central point in the city and you will find that they are an asset to your city. They will spend 90 cents out of every colar that they get Hehe here with the merchants of Atlanta. Your: Committee, composed oe the following gentlemen: Mr. Frank Wilby, Mr. H. G. Hastings, Mr. Wiley Moore, Mr. Harry Brown, has been asked to make recommendations in regard to this condition. I hope that this Committee will realize the importance teturn home and the North Geoteia farmers readily find a market of this situation and that Council will follow their recommendations, for the South Georgia products when they carry them back home. Let your city take the lead and other cities will follow your example and provide market space for the farmers to come in, in their trucks. They do not want any store house; what they want ~ is a place where they can come and not be made to move every hour. . Let Atlan-. With the proper invitation given to them this business will grow and ~ it will help Atlanta. We are telling the. farmers every day to diver- sify. They are doing this. what they have to sell. There is too much stuff shipped into Georgia from California, Oregon, Maine, New York and Florida. There is also too much stuff grown in Georgia that is rotting in the fields. What we want to do is to help the farmer find a market for his produce. Give him one here in your city! Let him bring in this fresh produce daily. Now let us help them in disposing of . The truck route is the cheapest route by which he may dispose of his : stuff as he has no express charges, packing and crating charges when he can pack his produce in his truck and bring it up and sell it direct to. the consumer. ; EUGENE TALMADGE. ~ MARKET REPORT | : OF GEORGIA PRODUCTS INDEX Prevailing Wholesale Prices Oct. 7, 1930.
