JONES, DIRECTOR STATE CAPITOL 7 ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 2, 1930. . THE AMERICAN MASTODON i When I was a boy I went to the Atlanta Exposition in 1895. I. remember in one of the buildings there was a giant skeleton that rep- resented an animal that roamed the plains of this country thousands of years ago. This was the skeleton of an animal of proportions so large that he would have been twenty times as large as an elephant . that we now see. There are none of these Mastodons left to-day. The scientists, geologists and all the experts can tell us exactly how this American Mastodon looked, how he acted, ang what made him disappear. ularly interesting) to us, but the theory of these experts as to how he , Was finally conquered ang utterly destroyed, is. interesting. Do you know their theory as to| how he was destroyed? _ They say that the little animals ate off this mastodons feet. He was so large that a rat or skunk or weasel could gnaw at his back heels and he could not whirl around ang stop him quick enough. While he was trying to stop the little dorents that were working on his back heels others were attacking his front feet. The hig old fellow was kept so busy fighting the little animals that he was ey Onuered and. _ destroyed. a _ Buily for the little animals when they got him! When this olq mastodon stepped on something like a cow, or horse, or deer, there was nothing left but a greasy spot. too strong for his neighbors.. He ate up all the grass and drank up all - the water from the other animals in dry times. In other words he made them suffer by his Gargantuan appetite. We have a different form of American Mastodons devastating the~ country to-day. They are in the shape of human beings. They have not grown gigantic in physical statue, but they have developed into titanic proportions in power legislated to them, in the form of tariff _ favors and combinations that amount to Txusts. These modern day Mastodons have advanced the price of mule - shoes inthe last 20 years from $3 a hundred pounds to $8.0 per hun-_ dred pounds. These modern day Mastodons ae advanced the price of an ordi- nary lantern in the past 20| years from 35 cents retail price to $1.40 retail price. I bought one last Saturday in McRae at the Wilcos Hard- ware Store, it ene me $1.40. These modern day Mastodons have fixed a system of laws bad trade customs where they can hold that it is all right for them to manufac- ture a mowing machine and sell it to an American farmer for $120.00 and sell it to our neighboring farmers in Mexico for $60.00. I am not talking about machines made in different. places, I am talking about machines that are made in the same factory. These Mastodons are so large that it takes a fleet of automobiles - for each. one of them. Their averageqays work is about six hours a day and for this they receive from fifty to five hundred thousand dollars a year. : The pitiful part of it all is that the people who raise the raw material out of which all the wealth is produced are being trod down. by these monsters and are not receiving the cost of reguene their raw products. 9 cents a pound cotton, 90 cents a bushel wheat, 8 1-2 cents a. pound hogs, 10 cents a pound tobacco, are going to make women ang children suffer this winter. These people that are going to suffer are awiul little in the eyes. of the Mastodons. Look out Mastodons! History repeats itself! Too hunery, these EUGENE TALMADGE.
