: 2 DEPARTMENT 9 7 EUGENE-TALMADGE. \ , PUBLISHED BY THE BUREAU OF MARKETSA. D. J ONES, DIRECTOR = TOL. 13 STATE CAPITOL ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 1930. WINTER GARDENS AND WINTER GRAIN _ We have had a splendid season all over Georgia. In some sections, the rain was very heavy. Some of the cot-. tonseed is sprouting in the burs and ruining the staple of the cotton. It is worth but very little now as good staple. I dont know what this inferior staple will bring. If you possibly can, hold your cotton at present prices, and dont plant any next spring. You cannot grow it at the price it is bringing now. You can hold it better than you can plant it next spring, at these prices. _ Have you planted a turnip patch yet? Have you plant- ed those onions? If not, get busy and plant them right away. I always hate to see a farmer buying shipped-in onions and cabbage when he can grow them at home. What about your feed for another year? Have you anything for your calves, pigs and chickens to graze on this winter? If you are needing some feed for your mules and horses next spring, put in some oats, mixing about fifteen pounds of vetch seed to the acre. Do this right away. Dont wait until the old Twelve Days. That old Twelve Days for planting small grain is just a say- ing, anyway. The safest rule, if you cannot plant your oats, wheat, rye and barley in October, is to wait until next October to plant it. Rye and barley make excel- lent grazing for pigs, calves and chickens. If you plant it before the weather gets cold, it will take deep root and will be a great help to you in the winter. Dont get fooled because flour is now selling cheap. You know the reverse can happen. I would not be sur- prised to see higher priced flour next spring. Put ina few acres of wheat. It makes good chicken feed, the bran and shorts make extra good hog feed, and there is no flour in the world that will compare with home- raised plain flour made from fresh wheat. me) MARKET REPORT iS OF GEORGIA PRODUCTS Prevailing Wholesale Prices Sept. 23, 1930. Mr. T. M. Linder and I went to the Tobacco Conference in Raleigh, N. C., on Thursday, September 18th. They had a very large and enthusiastic meeting. Mr. Linder and I submitted a plan to them to have it in their by-laws for its members to refuse to grow any tobacco unless they could contract in advance for it, so much per grade. yet incorporated it in their by-laws. We are receiving numbers of letters every day in response to the article that I wrote in the Bulletin last week on forming a to- bacco association in Georgia on the plan of contracting all tobacco in advance. This is the only sensible thing to do. If we can perfect an organization like this in- Georgia, I believe that the Association in North Carolina will follow suit. The tobacco crop in North Carolina and Georgia can control] the price of tobacco. ~ _ Within the next few weeks we are going to call a meeting of all of the tobacco growers at some central point in the tobacco section. A notice will appear in the Bulletin on the front page regarding the time and place of this meeting. : Remember, the darkest part of the night is just before dawn. certainty in this world is change. Things cannot keep on like they are now. Dont give away your land. Dont allow it to wash away. Move further back into the country, stay at home, and plow that land. Repair your buildings and your fences. After all, real estate is the only natural wealth that we have. into its own! ie Sept. 23, 1930. EUGENE TALMADGE.
