GEORGIA [ARKET 4 DEPARTMENT of L eY GENE TALMADGE. BULLE PUBLISHED BY THE BUREAU OF MARKETSA. D. JONES, DIRECTOR STATE CAPITOL ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, AUGUST 28, 1930. HERE COMES HELP! For several weeks I have been receiving letters from all sections of Georgia that would make you heartsick, all with the vibrant question What are we to do with prices as low as they are, prices below the cost : pro- - duction? We have received a great many suggestions, most of them good.. One of the best plans is the BUY A BALE MOVEMENT. You will remember that we tried this. in 1914 and it was a great help to the farmers of the State, and then too, the people who bought the cetton made money on buying it and holding it. If business men and individ- -uals who are able to do so will buy cotton now, giving the farmer a price better than the present market price, and put it up, they will not only help the farmer but. make money in doing it. Put it on your porches, in your back yards, in your garages, and you will find later that you will profit by your act. State can, in this way, materially aid in the relief of the cotton farmer. _ Many of our farmers write that they are almost naked and see no way to buy clothing or food for their little children. The situation is deplorable and calls for im- mediate help from those who are in better financia] con- dition. The business concerns of the | We have had a letter this week from one of our fertil- izer manufacturers in Sylvania, The Screven Oil Mill, which I am printing below: Tn order to help our customers, we will make them the following proposition: Bring us enough cotton to cover the amount of your indebtedness to us, and we will credit your ac- count or note at the rate of 10 cents per pound, basis Middling Cotton, and arrange to hold this cotton in bonded warehouse till next spring, and if the cotton is then sold for a price that will net more than 10 _ eents f. 0. b. Sylvania or Woodcliff, then we will give you the benefit of the excess price. If the cotton is sold for less than 10 cents basis Middling, Sylvania, then we will stand the loss and you will still get credit on your indebtedness at the rate of the 10 cents basis Middling. This is a splendid move on the part of the Screven Oil Mill and I trust that all of our fertilizer manufacturers and mixers will follow this lead and send out similar let- | ters to their customers over Georgia thus relieving in a great measure the stringent situation prevalent at this time. | EUGENE TALMADGE.
