FARM LAND EDITION GEORGIA MARKET BU LE: ng PUBLISHED BY THE BUREAU OF MARKETSA. D. JONES, DIRECTOR STATE CAPITOL ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, AUGUST 21, 1930. NUMBER 37 ~ We Must Keep Driving! The price of-cotton and tobacco in Georgiais disas-. trous. I wrote last week to hold it if you could. There are lots of farmers who can hold their cotton off the market. Where this is done ,it will help the price of cotton that is forced on the market. Some of the banks and business houses can help in this holding movement. Let me give you a good tip: If you have any mon- ey, and are looking for an investment, buy some of this cheap cotton. Cotton is easily stored. You can put it. in an old crib, garage, or most anywhere. It is now sell- ing below the cost of production. When anything is selling below the cost of production, it is a good time to buy, and a lot of the mills are gobbling up all of this cheap cotton that they can buy. What does this mean? It means that the mills think that cotton is going higher. As I stated above, we must keep driving. Farming will have to go on another year, and long after that. Think about the fertility of your soil. Now is a good time to get some Hairy Vetch and Austrian peas, and broadcast them in your cotton middles in September, and plow them in. Of course, if you have time, it is best to flat-break your land and harrow them in the same as you wouldioats. Anyway, get them early and sow them at least by the last of September. I know what I am talking about when I say that it will double the yield of corn next year. Turn this crop under along about the last of March or the first of April. Plant in corn, without any fertilizer, and you will surprise your- self at the yield. IT have had several letters written to me on the ne- cessity of legislation controlling the marketing of tobacco in Georgia, the warehouse charges, and the commission for selling it. Virginia, Kentucky, and North Carolina have legislation controlling these matters. I have had several complaints of exorbitant charges for selling to- bacco in Georgia. The representatives are now run- ning in the tobacco sections. Talk to them about these matters. There was a bill introduced two years ago on this subject, but it failed in passage. I get letters daily Loe farmers over the state, com- plaining about the price of cotton, cottonseed and to- bacco. Conditions are abnormal. We are not getting for our products, what we should. These conditions can- not last. Make the best of them that you possibly can. Be particular and house all of your feedstuffs. Take care of it. Gather your cotton while the green weight is in it. Dont sell it at present prices if you can help it. Cottonseed are worth more than the present market price that they are giving at my home town of $20. 00 per ton. They are worth more than $20.00 per ton as fretilizer, or as feed for cattle. If you have any cattle to feed, or will use any fertilizer next spring, it will pay you to hold your pone at the present prices. Tt 19,, 1930. EHUGENE TALMADGE, Commissioner. Second-hand Farm Machinery, Flowers ang Seed, Incubator ang Ornamental Nursery Stock no- tices are published in monthly supplement which appear on the first Thursday of each month. ee Farm land for sale editions are published at intervals during the year. Under Legislative act the Market Bulletin does not assume any responsibility for any notice appearing in the Bulletin or transaction resulting therefrom. P swemccere ILLUSTRATING THE PLIGHT OF MANY GEORGIA FARMERS NOTE: We are printing below a let- ter received by Commissioner Talmadge on Monday. It illustrates to such an extent the plight of many farmers at _ the present time, that Mr. Talmadge is publishing it for the benefit of the readers of the Bulletin: Boek: Aug. 18, 1930. Dear Mr. Talmadge: I read that you are taking great in- terest in farmers and I thought I would write you about conditions of crops and prices in this part of the country. The estimaters may report favorably, but I think they will be fooled when the gathering time comes, for the weevil is at work, and the pres- ent prices of cotton wont pay half what the people owe for this present crop, not saying anything for food or clothes. Many people now are without clothes and something to eat. The stores wont let you have anything and what are we to do. This letter may sound merciless to you but every word is true, Every time we get fixed no matter what we try to do, chickens, cows, farming or anything, we get nothing for what we produce. Mr. Talmadge dont you think the poor farmers have a lot to do with the price of cotton, at least I have been thinking so. They havent got money to move the cotton fabric from the mills. They dont get enough back out of it to buy their clothing back out of it and they ga bare and try ti save a little for food. .Do you wdesstand what Im driving at? If they could get more for their cotton, of course, they would buy more. There isnt one house clothing for the family and bed clothes. If we poor marmers are not aided in - gome way in the price of cotton, we will have to quit. We cant farm with fingers and toes. Mr. Talmadge, we know, or believe - you are doing all you can, ang if you - want to publish this letter you can, or do anything you see fit to do good for wa are at the mercy of the world and hope these big moneyed men will open their hearts and think some one else has to live beside themselves. Mr. almadge, I would like out of a hundred that has enough)! to see this in MARKET BULLETIN print and maybe it will go to some ones; heart and think of the poor class for we cant do anything without help now for we are now almost invalids in this world. We are poverty stricken and times look like they are getting worse insteag of better. W. Z. Flor- ence, Rt. 1, Lincolnton, Ga.
