IF IT WERE POSSIBLE TO MAGNIFY A PASTURE If it were possible to magnify a pas- ture several hundred or thousand fold and all the parasites in the same proportionso that blades of grass would appear as tall bamboos and small forage plants as. great jungle trees, it would be easier to convince livestock growers of the desirability of - careful attention to sanitation and of the importance of constant watchful- ness in combating the ravages of parasites that live in the pascture and attack the various kinds of. livestock. Such a magnified pasture would stand revealed a8 a place of lifeand of death. Many of the livestock para- sites are tenacious of life and are able to withstand the most unfavorable con- ditions. Yet the great proportion of them die without ever having the ap- portunity to attack an animal. How- ever, many of these parasites have powers of reproduction and multipli- cation that seem marvelous: Thous- ands of immature forms will come from a single adult parasite. Many live through complicated life - cycles and may have one or more intermed-. iate hosts on which they live between their attacks on horses, cattle, sheep, or swine, Unlike the jungle hunters, many of the pests in this~ magnified pature would seem sluggish and inertbarely alive, perhaps. The stomach worm, that infests the sheep, for example, emerges from the ground and: finds a resting place in a tiny curl in a blade There it remains while the grass develops. If no sheep bites off the grass the stomach worm in time dies. If a sheep crops the grass, the - stomach worm enters and becomes ac- tive within the sheeps stomach, joins with other stomach worms, and preys on the sheep, which is likely to be- -* come unthrifty and unprofitable. Fortunately fo rthe livestock grow- ers, most of these. parasites are able to live and reproduce only when they are: able to attack domestic animals of the same or closely related species. The danger from parasite-infested pastures. is by no means so great if it is possible to use this years horse pasture for cat- tle. or sheep next year and for hogs the third U. 8. D. A. Ls
