ARE YOU BUYING FEED?

I have written several articles on the front page of
this Bulletin before, to the effect that the farmer cannot
afford to haul his feed ten miles, if it is given to him.
Most of the farmers who are now buyng their feed, are
paying very high prices for it. They are stopping their
teams at a time when they are needed in the field, and
sending them off after the feed. This loss of time of

man and beast is coming high.

(There is no need for Georgia farmers to buy any of
their feed. If you have a corn patch planted, dont neg-
lect it. First, clean it thoroughly and then plow it often
and regularly. If you neglect plowing your corn waiting,
say two or three weeks between plowing it, you will hurt
it every time you plow it. The roots gradually work to
the top when it is not cultivated. The longer you stay
out of your corn, the more roots have worked to the top
of the ground. Then, when you go in and plow it, you
throw it back and it will take about two or three weeks
- to eatch up again. About this time, it is grassy again,

and the roots have worked to the top of the ground. Con-
sequently, when the time comes for it to make corn, it
shoots and misses. Put a furrow in your corn every week

until you lay it by. The time to lay your corn by is about

the time it begins to silk and tassel.

Before you lay it by, be sure that you have either
velvet beans, peanuts, soy beans, Otootan beans, or peas
planted in the corn. All of these legumes which I have
mentioned produce nodules on the roots, which contain
a high percentage of nitrogen. They produce bacteria
in the soil which is very beneficial in growing crops the
next year. These legumes also produce feed for cows,
hogs and people. A little extra effort, will grow them in
your corna little more extra effort will work them a

time or two and make them pay you as much as any work t

you do on the farm. You will have a good place to plant
your cotton or corn the next year; or, if you want to
plant oats this fall, try planting it where you! have had _
peas, beans or peanuts. You will find that the oats will _
practically double in yield, followed after these crops.

The Chemistry Department here at the Capitol makes
an inoculation for all of these legumes that I have men-
tioned, and sell it to the farmers of Georgia at cost, which _
is thirty cents for an acre bottle. We figure one bushel
to the acre.
this to the acre it will require less inoculation.

of seed for planting. On a piece of ground where you
had these legumes planted the year before it is necessary
to inoculate the seed. However, where you did not have
these legumes planted the year before, you will find that
the inoculation will pay you more than fertilizer. ees

It is not too late to plant corn. Some varieties of corn a
do exceptionally well planted after oats.

It is just now potato planting time. Dont neglect this, |
They come in good for the children and hogs. It has _
been estimated that an acre of potatoes produce more

i \

hog feed than five acres of any other crop. : ares
The old rule of Raise what feed you need on the farm

for your stock and the people, and as much cotton as you ci

can after you do this, is about the correct recipe for
farming in Georgia. Be sure to follow the first provision
Raise all of the feed that you need for your people and
stock, and a little bit to sell. When you doi this, there
will be no overplanting or over-production of cotton.

Regarding Plant Shipments To
Non-Money Order Post Offices

_ We are publishing below a very timely letter re-
ceived this week, which should be of interest to both

_ Before shipping, determine if your plants are go- ae
ing to a non-money order post office. oe
to send them some other way than C. O. D.

Commissioner of Agriculture,

Having read your numerous articles on the front
page of the Bulletin, and being both a farmer and
also connected with the post office department, I ~
take the liberty of offering a suggestion that I hope |
you will put before the plant shippers of Georgia.

I have noticed that frequently patrons of this of-
fice order perishable plants from the growers in
South Georgia, and only remit the exact amount of __
the advertised price and do not include postage for
delivering, believing that the price quoted means de-
livered. The shipper makes shipment and sendsthe
parcel COD for the amount of the postage, plus the
COD fee and return: money order charges.
alone causes frequent misunderstandings at post of-
fices that are not money order offices.
is small as compared with the trouble that follows.

Kindly note the following extract from the 1924
P.L. & R., Sec. 10, paragraph 11: ee

If a COD parcel is received at a non-money order
office, the postmaster thereat shall notify the mail-
ing postmaster, who shall ascertain whether the
sender desires the parcel returned or delivered with-
If the sender instructs in
writing that the parcel shall be delivered without

shall attach the order to the record and notify the
postmaster at the office of address accordingly. __

Now you can see what happens to a shipment of
plants while all this is being done. 2
week to get all this straightened out, and naturally
