AGRICULTURE 21g (COMMISSIONER SSS PUBLISHED BY THE BUREAU OF MARKBITSA. D. JONES, Sec STATE CAPITOL pO ATLANTA, GEORGIA, TH URSDAY, MAY 8, 1929. Recent Cut In Milk Prices We are being propagandered in Georein every day with he fact that: we are not pr =e enough milk in the State of Georgia for hgme - consumption. Read the following letter sent out bet the Foremost Dairy Products, Inc. on April 27th, 1930: TO FOREMOST MILK PRODUCERS: On account of the surplus supply of milk due to summer time increased production it is necessary to protect the present price being paid to our year-round shippers we will be forced to purchase milk on a surplus basis of .55 per butterfat pound which surplus is based on the average amount shipped et day in wa EXAMPLE: oe a A shipper who has been shipping 100 gallons per day in March and increased to 115 gallons per day in AprilWe will _ pay 70c and 80c per butterfat pound according to the grade as a basic figure. and the additional 15 gallons, which is a surplus, a __-will be paid for at the rate of .55 per butterfat pound. This wie be effective starting May ist, 1930." your daily average for the month of March was pounds which will be the basic figure used. This Company is the J. C. Penny Company. I oe informed that all. of the large dairies have sent out form letters Senay to this, ay You will notice in the first sentence that on account of the sur- plus supply of milk they are reducing the price from seventy and eighty cents to fifty cents to fifty five cents per butter fat pound for the surplus. This fifty five cents butterfat pound means about nineteen cents per gallon for average millc delivered at the creamery. oe for average milk. In all of the cities in Georgia the retail price of milk, cream ae ice cream is high. The producers, or the men who own and milk the cows will have to perfect distributing agencies of their own. You ca not stand such cuts as are outlied in the above circular letter. In a little while there will be a whole lot of the milk that is surplus and most all of it will be cut to fifty-five cents if you do not fight bac , ~The _pasteurization ordinances of our cities in Georgia have h the effect of putting the distribution of milk out of the hands of the real dairymen who own and milk the cows. Pasteurization does not add -anything to the worth of the milk. Tn fact, it kills the vitamins that are most beneficial to young children. Go to our largest hospitals anc _ sanitariums and you will find that they. recommend Grade A Raw Millk I would hate to see Georgia go out of the dairy business after the hundreds of thousands-of dollars have been spent urging them go into this business. But with the price being reduced to the poin where there is no possible profit in.the business, the- farmers dairy nes, are going to be forced to give it bob There is very little rice grown in Georgia. Tt is fine feed for peop! chickens and hogs. It makes well when you plant it on reasonably dam land and, keep ib clean. It can be planted in Georgia as late as the middie of June. You might cut down your feed bill if you plante some rice. If you have a large flock of chickens and some hogs you will be surprised to find rice such good feed. Look in the- Bulletin for ee of rice seed and try planting some this year. EUGENE TALMADGE. MARKET REPORT OF GEORGIA PRODUCTS Prevaling Wholesale Prices, May 6, 1930, Always subject to Variation. =. This is being sold under the name of FIELD BRAND ARSENATE OF LEAD. Chemical analy- sis shows that it is a mixture of approximately one pound of Arsenate of Lead mixed with about 100 pounds of lime. It is our information that this is sacked at night and then peddled in trucks through the country on the following day. The bags show that it is manufactured by the Georgia Caro- lina Chemical Company, of Savannah, Georgia. As a matter _ of fact the bags were printed at Adel, Ga., and the mixture is put in bags at Adel, and the officials of the Georgia Carolina Chemical Company at Savannah state that they have no know-_ ledge of the product and have never sold a pound of insecti- cide or any other material in Georgia. It is the opinion of the State Entomologist that the above mixture is of no value as a poison. We have requested the authorities to arrest all the guilty parties and we are using every effort to see that they are prosecuted to the full extent of the law. With an annual increase of pests it is essential to poison some crops and profitable te poison most of them. It is useless, and dangerous however, to use inferior poison. oe The State Standards provide that Lead Arsenate and Cal- -eium Arsenate shall analyze as follows: ee : . LEAD ARSENATE |. Not less than 30 percent total arsenate pentoxide. Arsenic in water-soluble form, not more than 0.5 Percent: . Not more than 0.3 percent total arsenic trioxide. CALCIUM ARSENATE Not less than-40 percent total arsenie pentoxide. Arsenie in water soluble form, not more than 0.75 percent. Not more than 0.25 percent total arsenic trioxide. Density not less than 80 nor more than 100 cubic inches to a pound. \ The above standards were promulgated after years of re- search work and under present conditions seem to be the proper standards. Users of insecticides should carefully notice _the branding and if in doubt as to the quality of the goods communicate with the Department. Nee See We are doing all in our power to see that only the very best poisons are sold this year. ; = LEEMAN ANDERSON; > Chief Clerk, Department of Agriculture os Plants For Sale vt. insp. imp.
