DEPARTMENT of UGEN E-TALMADGE. AGRICULTURE,.,= COMMISSIONERS PUBLISHED BY THE BUREAU OF MARKETSA. D. JONES, DIRECTOR STATE CAPITOL ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, MARCH. 27, 1930. Stags, Ib... SPRING TIME . There used to be a joke that went the eoandsd in my sction about certain fellows being winter time farmers. time farmers would be very active until the sun got hot and These winter: so their crops would come up-pretty small in the fall of the year, Spring is now here. You can get busy add plant anything _ that you wish in Georgia from now on. As a rule the early _ planting is the best. In planting cotton be particular to put out enough seed and _ do not cover the seed too deep- A great many times when you think you are covering it just right you are covering it too deep. The only safe plan is to see about one fourth of the seed on top of the ground. Be sure to get a stand of cotton and keep a stand if you wish to make a full crop. But before you plant any cotton be sure to plant all the food erops that you need on your place for yourselves, your hands and your stock. It is also a pretty good idea to figure on hagiay a little ~ os They brought in more money to-the farmers of Georgia than. the hog sales. - | understand that orders. from the hatcheries have slowed up. You cannot meet these chicken cars unless you. are: setting eggs at. home or ordering some baby chicks, In another part of this Bulletin you will find a letter from one of our Georgia Hatcheries that shows the pains that they _ surplus food crop to sell. When you do this you are not going to over plant cotton. Do not plant more than you can work well. I would rather have ten acres too little than have five acres too much. A good stand, kept up with and cultivated when it needs to be will generally pay a small profit. An indifferent stand indif- ferently worked generally shows a toss regardless of what price you receive. _ I was proud of the chickens that were raised and: sold in Georgia last year. Chicken cars kept rolling all the time. \ are taking to give satisfactory baby chicks. We have a great : many good hatcheries in Georgia. I like to see them patron- _ ized rather than have this money sent out to foreign hateh- eries. Read this letter that you will find elsewhere in theBul- letin and also the articles on the care of baby chicks, after you receive them from the hatchery. The care of the baby chicks is very important, and you will lose them, even though they come to you in perfect condition, if you dont take good eare of them. When this happens you should not blame the Hatch- ery. I have been pretty: well all over the Sateri in the last moe : I think there are more real winter time farmers this year than I ever saw before. This is good if you follow it up: The only way to follow it up is to stay with the crop when the sun gets hot. : Somebody asked my friend, former Comsntadacne of Agri- culture Jim Price, what the best kind of fertilizer was to use to make a big crop. Mr. Price answered: bosss tracks. Mr. Price was not far wrong. oe EUGENE TALMADGE. MARKET REPORT OF GEORGIA PRODUCTS cP revaring Wholesale Prices, March 25, 1930, Always subject to Variation. There should be at least a square foot of floor space for every three chicks. Either coal or oil broo- ders give good results. Not more than 200 chicks should be placed under a brooder with a 32 inch canopy, and 150 would probably be better. A 42 inch canopy brooder should not have more than 350 chicks, and 250 to 300 chicks in this size brooder is better still. For a 52 inch canopy, the max- imum should not be more than 500 _ chicks, and 300 to 400 will be better. _ The-brooder should be in operation _ for several days- before the chicks ar- _Yive, so that it can be regulated. For _ the first week the temperature should range from 95 to 100, with the bulb of the thermometer hanging about _two inches from the floor and placed right at the edge of the canopy. Each week after that the temperature should be reduced 5 degrees until you are operating at a temperature of 80; where it should remain until the chicks are weaned from the heat entirely. _ Baby chick purchasers should ar- Yange with their postmasters to advise "phone them if possibleand not allow Z MARKET BULLETIN them of the arrival of their chicks them to remain in the post office or be hauled by rural carriers, as it is not possible for them to always give the chicks the best of attention. . Your brooder floor should have a thin layer of sand and on top of that a half inch to an inch of litter, such as peat moss, chopped alfalfa hay, or in fact almost anything of this char- |. acter that is not moulded, but see that the chicks do not eat this litter. Bur- lap sacking spread over the litter for the first two. or three days is a good way to prevent. this. Chicks should, be confind to the brooder for the first two or three days, but the enclosure shoud not be nearer than 2 1-2 to 3 feet from the edge of the canopy. This enclosure should be gradually enlarged until the third or fourth day, when the chicks can have the run of the house. As chicks are removed from the shipping boxes, which should be done on their receipt, their beaks should be dipped in water from which the chill has been removed, and all water giv- en them for several days should have the chill removed and set near enough the edge of the canopy of the brooder that it will remain luke warm. Also feed immediately. Feed a high grade starting mash, fed strictly in accordance with the manu- facturers directions. Do not feed milk or anything else in connection with this mash for at least ten days, as anything of this character you may add will unbalance your feed and _ is liable to cause trouble. For the first ten days it is well to heat your feed through and through to kill any mould that may have resulted from damp- ness. This can be done by placing in the oven of your stove. If feed is kept before chicks continuously one-half inch feeding space to each chick is necessary, and .if fed at intervals each chick should have at least an inch feeding space. - - Plenty of clean, fresh water before the chicks at all times is absolutely necessary. After ten days butter milk may be fed. Use earthen ware or glass containers Grit and oyster shell should be kept before chicks continuously after they are five or six days old. Scald all vessels, daily, whether for milk or wa- ter. Do not place drinking founts near your feed troughs, as there is a chance of their splashing out and wet- ting any feed that might be on the floor causing it to sour and cause trouble. _ . Plenty of fresh air, wthout drafts, is absolutely necessaryat the same time you must maintain the correct tem- perature under your hover. There should be enough ventilation so that the air smells sweet and clean Sanitation is of the utmost impor- tance. Do not allow the litter on your brooder floor to become foul. Clean often and thoroughly. There is no easy road to success and To the Headers of the tell the enumerators YES. thing for proof of his ability. MARKET BULLETIN As you know, the United States census enumerators will | begin taking the census on April 2. One question that will be asked of every person above the age of ten will be: CAN YOU READ AND WRITE? It is the solemn duty of every person who has attended school and who can read and write any to . On account of the low rank that Georgia made in 1920 the state has been subjected to severe criticism by the rest | of the world. Hence, now is our opportunity to set ourselves _ vight by cooperation with the census takers in giving the cor- rect answer to the question, CAN YOU READ AND WRITE? _ They will not require any person to read, write or sign any- Yours truly, _ State Supervisor of Schools. Th | be os (A RELIABLE . . -HATCHERYMANS LETTER March 23, 1930. Honorable Eugene Talmage, Commissioner of Agriculture, Atlanta, Ga. Dear Sir: In the Market Bulletin which was issued under date of Feb. 27th, appears a letter from Crawford, Ga., which is being accepted by the poultryman over the State as a comdemnation of all Georgia Hatcheries. I know nothing of the merits of this case and do not wish it thought that I am trying to place the blame on any one connected, but I do know at the season of the year these chicks were said to have been purchased, when the weather is so cold, it is almost impossible to supply sufficient ventilation in a brooder room and at the same time keep the temperature as it should be and as a consequence many chicks are lost that would be raised at other seasons of the year. Hatcheries generally realize this and sell chicks for a lower price in order to help stand this loss. Knowing that you want to be fair to all Georgia farmers ,those who are Selling eggs to hatcheries and the hatcheries themselves, as well as those who are buying chicks from hatcheries, it has occurred to me that you would be willing to publish a statement in an early issue of the Market Bulletin that many of the Georgia Hatcheries are depend- able. There are many Georgia Hatcheries who are doing everything in their power to give the poultryman chicks of the best quality. It is not the attitude of the Hatcheryman of this class to uphold any persons who may be engaged in this business but who da not give the poultry- man a square deal, whether he be a Georgia Hatcheryman or a Hatch- eryman from some other state. For your information may I say that, in order to improve breeding flocks, my hatchery, each year, buys many hundreds of eggs from | pedigreed flocks and turns them over to poultrymen who supply us with eggs. From these eggs they get cockerels to head their flocks as well as some high class pullets. ; This season we purchased 125 male birds that came direct from the University of B. C. that were from hens with trap nest records, for heavy breeds of from 200 to 278 eggs and from leghorns with records of | from 250 to 339. These male birds are heading flocks from which we get eggs. To further protect purchasers of baby chicks from my hatchery a full time poultry specialist has been employed to supervise all flocks from which eggs are procured. This; man is not only a graduate of the University of Georgia, where he majored in poultry, but also isa quali- fied licensed poultry inspector by the American Poultry Association. Furthermore let me say that my hatchery has inaugurated a follow up system to determine the results obtained by the poultrymen who are purchasing chicks from our hatchery. Cards are mailed to the pur- chaser explaining the object and on the return card he tells how many chicks he has lost, the size of the brooder used, the kind of feed used, the temperature at which the brooder was kept, how the brooder house was ventilated and other points of management. On this mornings mail 14 of these cards came to my desk. These 14 poultrymen received their chicks from two to four weeks ago. The total number of chicks shipped to the senders of these fourteen cards - was 2325. The total loss to date is 281 chicks, only a 12 percent mor- tality. We believe this record is one of which any hatcheryman can justly feel proud. The mail each day brings similar replies with _ Similar results. This follow up work is done in the hope that we will be able to help the fellow who has not been fortunate in raising his chicks. It would be greatly appreciated if you can give the Georgia Hatch- erymen who are trying to do the square thing, a boost through your Market Bulletin which is so widely distributed throughout the State. In conclusion, allow me to say that I shall always appreciate the help = your department has given and is giving to the poultry industry of Georgia. ; s \ se sees S rhursday, March 27, 1930. _ Eggs For Sale organ stay-white and heavy lay- White Orp. eggs, $5 per 15.
