J am of the opinion that In south Georgia, that is, below Macon, peavine hay, peanut =o hay, velvet bean hay and other legume hay, such as soy beans _and-O-too-tan beans, are all easily g erown and cure readily. North of Macon: on all of the rolling red land, alfalfa grows What it lacks in quantity, it makes up in quality. There are several large fields of alfalfa in the state. There are numerous small patches of alfalfa. I want to tell you abiout . one. Yesterday, Mr. 8. E. Smith, of MeDonough, Henry County, Georgia, came in to the office for inoculation for two cars of He stated that he had been in to the Department of I asked him how long he could keep a stand on I asked him how much he had, and he said a When he told whesthat this acre- came interested and asked him to sit down and tell me about it. He stated that he averaged cutting it six times a year; that it averaged around 32 inches height in June, July and August. He stated that he applied stable manure to it every year and when he put nitrate of soda on it, it would stretch the height = ot the alfalfa at cutting time to about 35 inches. Here was the miraculous part of Mr. Smiths statement. He said that he had the worst runaway mules in Henry county, and that at hard work time he did not give his mutes but 10 ears of corn a day and that was at dinner. He stated that he gave them alfalfa at night and would leave them out in the lot where water was accessible. The next meal would be next day at dinner when he would give them the 10 ears of corn and no alfalfa or any other forage. Mr. Smith stated that one year he cut his alfalfa seven times. He also stated that he would cut it in the afternoon and would rake it into windrows the next afternoon, and would put it into is barn the next day. No staking, no poles, no cross pieces to fool with. He also stated that you could load as much loose alfalfa on a wagon as you could cotton seed hulls, that it lay very close. : I looked at Mr. Smith pretty closely. He looked like a Hard-Shell to me, and I believe he was telling me the truth. When he left the office his parting shot was that his farm was not in any Northern loan: : Anyone interested in planting patches of alfalfa, write Mr. 8. E. Smith at MeDonough, Georgia. I believe he will take pleasure in giving you the exact. details of how to prepare a piece of land and get it in shape for alfalfa. ~ Alfalfa is exceptionally good for mules, cows, hogs and ehickens. A lot of our imported feed has in it what they call . ground alfalfa meal. This is not a thing but alfalfa hay ground up. Now is the time to plent alfalfa! It is a a for us Geor- gia farmers to keep on buying corn and hay and paying high | fright rates to haul it about a thousand miles across the country. EUGENE TALMADGE.
