ee BY THE BUREAU OF MARKETSA. D. JONES, DIRECTOR VOL. 13. STATE CAPITOL ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER, 26, 1929. : Oats, Wheat and Cabbage for the Winter | = - Now is the proper time to think of your:supply of feed for ~ eorn and hay is short, plant you some oats. About ten pounds of vetch seed mixed with a bushel and a half of oats to the aere will more than double the yield of feed per acre where you plant oats to themselves. : We have some land in Georgia that is ideally Sr ies for wheat. Practically every family uses at least twenty- four pounds of flour per week. This costs money running through the year. On any well built up red clay land you can make from twenty to forty bushels of wheat to the acre. It is aw- hog feed, and the pure, home- ground flour is the best in the world. Thy dont use self-rising flour in the best wheat- - producing countries. Lets get a wage from it down here by using our own flour. In planting the winter feed erops, it is always a ood idea to fertilize the land well and not resort to too much acreage. and wheat will largely increase the yield of each. = ) your stock for next May, June, and July. If your crop of _ fully good chicken feed, and the shorts and bran make good _ An application of acid phosphate or Nasic slage to your oats : v I received a letter this morning from the Fidelity Fruit & Produce Company, calling my attention to the various kinds of cabbage plants that are being advertised in the Market Bulletin. The following varieties were the leading ones advertised: Charleston Wakefield, Jersey Wakefield, and Flat Dutch. These varieties are not good shipping cab- bage. The heads of the first two are pointed and crack open when they mature. The Flat Dutch grows a little too large for commercial purposes. The Copenhagen Market and the Golden Acre are the best varieties of cabbage to plant where > you wish to grow them to sell on the market. - They will gen- erally average about three pounds to the cabbage; which is an_ideal size for marketing purposes. The waste leaves from the cabhage are fine to feed your pigs, calves, and chickens- If you will handle them right you can make some profit out of an early cabbage crop in Georgia. Make your land very fertile where you plant your cabbage and if you fall down on your cabbage crop you will have your land in fine condition to plant another crop next spring. - Now i is ie time to think about and plant the above crops. Growing States At Memphis, ein. September 16th, commissioners of ag- riculture from nine of the eleven cot- cussed, at length and took definite ac- tion on several questiong of vital in- terest to.the farmers of the South. In last weeks Market Bulletin, there appeared resolutions relating to what we believed to be unfair practices by the cotton seeq crushers. The farmer ig not receiving a fair price for his cotton seed and the commissioners, thru the Federal Trade commission and Congress are sae ey to rec- tify these evils. : The tariff bill now before Congress proposes to give every protection to the manufacturing interests of the United States, but it appears that the same is not contemplated for the far- mers of America. The commissioners passed certain resolutions during their conference, in . which they Yrequest higher tariffs on many agricultural products, which is necessary in order to stabilize the price of our own com- modities and these resolutions also de- manq the same measure of protection for the farmer that is given the man- ufacturer. We were informed at Memphis that an effort will be made by certain un- scrupulous interests to, hamper the bar from this country plants and seeds which might bring into this country endangering many crops. The com- missioners took quick action on this question and warned Congress that the most rigid inspection ig necessary in order to protect our farmers and that any effort to weaken present rules or regulations would meet with ingtant disfavor by farmers, north, east, south ang west. The lapprdpriation of large. sums of money for the-purpose of reclaim- ing arid lands for farming purposes is unnecessary and wasteful.- Already there are millions of acres of farm lands untiljed{ In many instances the week of, ; prices below.cost of production. Open- ton growing states in conference dis- Federal Plant board in its efforts to | 1. diseased or insect bearing plants, thus there is a surplus in farm crops, with ing up for cultivation additional ac- reage can only aggrevate: this condi- tion and~therefore the commissioners: made known to Congress their oppo-., sition to further appropriations for this purpose. The conference listened, with sym- | pathy and interest, to Commissioner Mayo of Florida as Ke and his asso- ciates relateg the hardships that have come to the Florida growers because of the Mediterranean fruit fly. Ac- cording to Mr. Mayo, the fly is under control and no effort is being spared by either the Florida or Federal au- tharities to absolutely eliminate this pest that has cost our sister stats many millions of dollars. While no action was taken by the commission- -erg regaring the fruit fly, they are determined that it shall not enter any of the cotton growing states. After discussing the probable total production of the present cotton crop, Commissioner Harry D. Wilson, presi- dent of the association of Commiss- ioners of Agriculture, stated to news- paper men present that it is the be- lief of the commissioners from the cotton growing states that it will re- quire ideal weather conditions to bring the crop up to the estimate made by the Federal government on September Early frosts, excessive rains or -oth- er adverse conditions will cut the crop and cut it materially, if such conditi }aq occur over any material part of the. cotton belt, Mr. Wilson said. However, it was the opinion of the commissioners that the govern- ment estimate of Sept. AL was about correct on that date. The several commissioners of agri- culture from the cotton growing states are jealously guarding the interests | of the Southern farmer and will con- tinue to do so. If necessary, many of them will go to Washington in their efforts to secure beneficial legislation or to correct possible evils aeons our farmers. of 8 for $12 FOB. Mrs. N. R. Wilson, Canon, Ga. Rt.
