DEPARTMENT La EUGENE TALMADGE AGRICULTURE... COMMIS SION ER = Fertilizer and Winter Cover Crops | This year the fertilizer inspectors, working out of the Department of Agriculture. took 16,854 samples. This is the largest number that this laboratory has ever handled. Last year we took something like 13,000. In previous years this Department only took from five to six thousand samples of fertilizer. I have written to all the States in the United States where they have analysis of fertilizers and the next. State to Georgia, in number of samples taken, is Virginia with an ay- erage of 6 ,000 samples per year. - Up to this time we have mailed out. the reports on 9,404 saineies _ All of you who have received reports where the fertilizer was sub- eg ject to penalty, please write me if the companies have made satisfac-. tory settlement with you. After January 1st, where fertilizer is sub- ject to penality it will become the duty of the Department of Agricul- ture to enforce the collection of these penalties under the new fertil- izer law which passed the Legislature this summer and which is known as the Joe Freeman Fertilizer Bill: I was very much interested during the Legislature to. see how hard ~ Uncle Joe Freeman was working on this bill. Of course there were a - great many others who worked with Mr. Freeman on it and did val- uable work, but he was referred to as the. commonly accepted author of the bill and did valiant and constructive work for the farmers of Georgia. Uncle Joe was the Representative from Early County. 5 We co cut our fertilizer bill in half next year if we will plant: the - winter cover crops that I have been writing about in the Bulletin for the last month or two. I will. again give you the name of the Company from eS, you - may secure these seed. The Growers Supply Company, 746-Glenn _ Street, Atlanta, can supply both the Vetch and Austrian Pea seed. "They also have the; inoculation for these legumes. Be sure to use the ~ inoculation and follow the directions closely. This will cost you 50 cents more for a bottle that will inoculate one hundred pounds . of seed. You can also secure Vetch and Austrian Pea seed from Mr. R. L. Hasty, of CHIBIEYs Georgia, at 11 1- 2 cents per pound. You can se- We expect to be through with this analysis by the middle of October. money. cure Crimson Clover seed from Mr. Hasty at 15 cents per pound. This price includes inoculation and is F. O. B. Chipley. If you will apply about four or five hundred pounds of basic slag to the acre before planting these seed you can make a good crop next year without using any fertilizer at all with your ordinary field crops: You can secure the basic slag from A. A. Smith, Inc., Grant Building, Atlanta, delivered in carload lots at any point in Georgia for $10.50 Her ton. Basic Slag- develops from eight to ten, per cent acid and contains from forty-five to forty-eight per cent lime. : A good growth of vetch or peas with about four or five hundred pounds of basic slag to the acre turned under is better than applying a thousand pounds of 8-4-4 guano to the a@re under. your crop. It will make a better crop next year and if will qo your land: good: for two or three years in the future. Do a little figuring! A thousand pounds of 8-4-4 guano would cost you approximately $15.00. The four or five hundred pounds of basic slag to the acre would cost you approximately $2.50. The seed for planting the winter cover crop would cost you about $3.00.. You have the difference in $15.00 per acre with the commercial fertilizer and $5.50 per acre with your winter cover crop and basic slag. I have seen cotton and corn this fall which followed these winter cover crops with basic slag applied to the land that made better cotton and corn shan other crops I have seen that were fertilized very highly with commercial fertilizer where no winter cover crops had been planted. The biggest problem that farmers have in Georgia is to study the proper fertility of the soil. You cannot get it out of a fertilizer fac_ tory. Of course you can make expensive crops by the intensive use of commercial fertilizer, but you have it to do over again every year. This basic slag develops acid for three years in the soil, the legumes .that you turn under produce humus and PAGO SER in the soil that will last for three years. Lets not throw away all the ready cotton money this fall buying automobiles, gas and oil. Lets take some of it and buy some of* these - winter cover crops and plant us a pez patch for next year. Then may- be we can pay cash for our automobiles next fall and not miss the EUGENE TALMADGE.
