SE - GEORGIA _ MARKET BULLE} AGRICULTURE, 0, WENDY COMMISSIONER == ae aa poet a % Bras a a 78 ees pee Frat Ry I Ogee a isHED Lf tHe BUREAU OF MARKETS =~ STATE CAPITOL. ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, JULY 18, 1929. VOL: 13. NUMBER 34. _ Z A FEW THINGS OF INTEREST | The Agricultural Committee recommended unanimously the pass- age-of the fertilizer law. This bill which they have recommended pro- hibits the use of any material used in the mixture of fertilizer which does not analyze 3 per cent plant food n available form. vision automatically cuts out the use of filler. The Bill also provides that as far as practical the inspection of fertilizer shall be done at the factories and ports of entry into the State. This method will enable us to inspect by brands practically all the fertilizer that is put on the market. The bill also provides that the Commissioner of Agriculture shall collect the penalties for the farmers when the fertilizer falls below the guaranteed analysis. The Agricultural Committee also reported the unanimous recom- mendation of the passage of a law which regulates the sale of imita- tion butter and taxes it at ten cents per pound. If this bill is enacted into law it will supply the missing link in our law on this product about which we had the trial in the Federal Court at Augusta. This Bill as introduced and passed by the Agricultural Commitice was a copy of the Colorado law. This Colorado law was passed while we were in Au- gusta attending the trial of the case. There is a bill that comes up before Agricultural Committee No. 2 in the morning, known as the seed law. This bill is largely a copy of the seed law of the State of Tennessee. This Bill protects the pur- chaser of seed as to variety, germination and freedom from foreign matter such as noxious weeds and grasses. , The Powdered Milk bill is also up for hearing tomorrow before the Ways and Means Committee. Mr. Walker, of Ben Hill county, is also preparing a Commission This pro- >= Bill is fashioned after the Commission Merchant law of the State of Illinois, and will require all brokers and Commission Merchants handling farm produce to make an itemized report to the shipper of the produce and also report the purchaser of the product. In a meas- ure this will protect the shippers of produce on consignment. ~ All of the farmers in Bills referred to as they deal directly with farm products. we ? \ . I received a letter this morning in reference to the care that should be taken in gathering and curing peanuts. Peanut growing is quite an industry in Georgia now; we have reached the 100,000-ton mark. Peanuts should be gathered when they reach maturity. The fully developei nuts will weigh more and sell better than the nuts that are taken up before they are fully matured. Maturity is usually indicat- ed by the vines giving away. If you have rainy weather the vines will not give away, although the peanuts may be mature. Notice this care- fully, and as soon as the peanuts mature start gathering them. It is very easy to shake the dirt from them and stack them immediately without allowing them to lay in the sun. By doing this you improve the quality of your nuts and also have good hay when you thresh them. Do not put them in too large stacks. Stack them on poles, with cross pieces nailed about ten inches from the ground on the poles and put the nuts inside next to the poles. If you have any grass hay conven- ient, it is a good plan to cap the top of each peanut stack with grass hay. This will help keep out the water. In open weather the peanuts will cure in the stack in about 10 days. As soon as they are well cured have them thrashed, sack them in even weight sacks and bale your peanut tops in tight bales. If you are careless with this you will not realize much on your peanut crop. If you are careful with it you wiil get some money out of your nuts and will have some good hay to feed the State should be vitally interested in the Merchant Bill to be introduced in the House in the morning.
