= RICULTURE.., OMMISSION ER= ih ey Y DEPARTMENT 9 (3 EUGENE TALMADGE oe (PUBLISHED bi the BUREAU OF MARKETS aot You, 15. STATE CAPITOL : ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, JULY di, 3929: NUMBER 33. Caution On Shipping Watermelons id Produce A great many of the States of the Union have commission mer- - chant laws. Two years experience in the office of Commissioner of Ag- riculture has*made me realize the necessity for these laws. Watermelons, peaches, apples, cantaloupes, beans, tomatoes and hundreds of other farm products that I might name are shipped to brokers and commission merchants by farmers. every day. A farmer _is absolutely in their hands after he ships his stuff. In the majority of instances the brokers and commission merchants deal straight. In a great eee instances they do not deal straight. We need a law in Georgia licensing commission merchants and brokers that handle farm produce and that will require them to make an itemized statement of the sale.of all produce that they handle on. a commission basis. Last year we had an experience with A. H. Sanford and Company, 8 East Long Street, Columbus, Ohio. This broker and coramission merchant is rated as being good for $40, 000 credit, 4 x rating, which is the highest rating. He is listed as a trading and selling broker and as handling 2,000 carloads of different farm products annually. Our experience with this firm es year was very unsatisfactory. It cost the Bureau of Markets over $100.00, making settlement on some watermelons that were shipped to this firm. <= This year this same Company was tried on only one car of water- melons. The car-of melons was pulled and shipped from Statesboro, Georgia, on the 29th day of June. They were 30 pounds average, Dixie Belle watermelons from fresh vines. All the other melons from ~ this point brought a good price. We had a representative in Cincin- nati, Ohio, who inspected this car on July 2nd, and reported it in good . shape. When it reached A. H. Sanford and Company at Columbus, Ohio, just a few hours haul north of there, A. H. Sanford and Company reported that the best they could get for these watermelons was freight charges. They had the advantage of the farmer ee they took it by. taking his carload of watermelons. - In every instance of this kind I am going to publish the name of the Company and put the farmers of Georgia on notice. Every man who is registered Credit Good will not deal fair. I am also going to notify the Department of Agriculture in every State of the Union when I find a commission merchant dealing this way ae the farmers. alam doing that in this case. Be particular in the quality of your stuff, the pack of your stuff, and last and most important, to whom you ship your stuff. i EUGENE TALMADGE.
