. PUBLISHED SY dhe BUREAU: _OF MARKETS s= ae VOL. 13. STATE CAPITOL ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY. JUNE 27, 1929. ens = In the past Sock or ten days, I have made several trips 6ver Georgia. In some sections the cotton is above the average, in other sections it has a good growth but a large, infestation of weevils:~ In some sections the cotton is very late. Notice. your Weick closely and if you have an infestation of wee- vils apply Calcium Arsenate. You can secure this from the following Atlanta firms: ; : Ashcraft-Wilkinson Co., Trust Company of Ga. Bldg. Georgia Distributing Co., Healy Building. Atlanta Chemical Co., 101 Marietta Street. A. A. Smith, Inc., Grant Building. Peaslee-Gaulbert Co., 360 Fair Street, 8. W. ge You may also be able to secure Calcium Arsenate from your local -. dealers. You can get the Calcium Arsenate for approximately seven cents 2 pound . delivered. i 3 you do not have a machine for dusting your cotton, you can dust it by putting the poison in flour sacks and shaking it over the cotton. Be a time. me, _ We have sampled a great deal of Calcium Arsenate this year. Some of it runs below the standard. It is very important to know that the 5 = = ATLANTA MACON Cabbage, (green) crated, 100 lbs. #.--$1.10 $1.00. $2.00 _ Eggs, Ga., Extra, doz. oS 35 35 132 Fees, Ga., Standard, doz. ------------ as 33 30 Eggs, Ga., Trade, Gay ee al: OL .28 _ Eggs, Yard Run, doz. -.--------------- ~o eee | Boe 30 Stags, Ib, =-....--- 8 25 25 items 46s ee 25 95. 5 25 =a = Where the rows of your cotton are not too wide you can ate two rows: AUGUSTA. Of course if it stays dry and hot in your section, frequent ploughing will aid materially in holding the weevils down, ~ ~ Tyreceived a communication this week in reference to the recent cut in price of cream. The creameries contend that this was done on ac- count of the quality of the cream. They state that some of the cream was good, some indifferent, and some: bad. Anyone in the business of selling cream should be very particular to keep the quality of their cream up to the best. If varying grades of cream continue in Georgia it will become necessary to establish grades. Of course if grades are established, the lower grades will not bring as much as the best grades. The farmers can largely correct as themselves by being more partic- ular with their cream. We are constantly taking samples of cream that are sold to the dif- ferent creameries and making reports to the shippers of the cream and to the owners of the creameries. I do not like this cut in the price of cream. It is very hard to make money with cattle. Have you planted all the feed that your cattle will need this winter? - If you-havent, it is not too late to do it now. You won't make any money on a dairy if you buy your feed. Cowart, Cass: ~ lima beans and it will : imagine a line running from about twenty miles below By Charles H. Alden, Entomologist Cornelia Station. Saas est that entered ited States from The Mexican Bean Beetle, a pest that entered the Uni tates from Mexico about 1850, has, in recent years become the most serious insecl attacking snap beans in north Geor ; ome aro attaneed by this insect are, in their order of importance, lima ans, , corn, okra, egg beans, cow peas, soy beans, alfalfa, clover, velvet beans, corn, okra, plant, potato and squash. Its preferred host plants are the snap and available. ~ . Spread in Georgia The pest was discovered in northern Alabama in 1920 and spread into northwest Georgia the following year. Since that time it has spread over the entire northern part of the state and has extended its range into middle Georgia. To date, it has not been found in the southern part of the state. except a small infested area at Thomasville. If we Columbus on une west to a point 4 few miles below Augusta on the east, we will have the approximate southern range in Georgia of this insect. No doubt the infested area will advance further southward during 1928. The in- festation at Thomasville covers only a small area and yet the insect was discovered there several years ago. In the higher altitudes, it is almost impossible to raise a good crop of snap or lima beans unless controi measures are used. _ Appearance of Insect and Nature of Injury : The adult beetle is about one-fourth inch long, one-fifth inch wide and nearly hemispherical in shape. The wing covers are brown and . have sixteen black spots, eight to each electron. The larva is about one-third inch long when full fed, orange in color, and covered with long t formation. The eggs are orange-yellow in color and are laid in clusters of from 40 to 60 on the under side of the leaves. ~ orange colored and attached to the leaf by the last larval skin. The injury is caused entirely by the feeding of the larvae. Practi- cally all of the feeding is confined to the lower side of the leaves al- though the larvae feed to some extent on the pods and stems, feeding on the leaves is very noticeable, causing them to have a lace- like appearance with later a dried out deadened look. As practically all of the feeding is on the under side, it is very necessary to get spray or dust underneath the plants to get effective control. Control As the beetle hibernates in waste places near bean fields, these places should be burned over in the early spring before they come out of Most of the beetles emerge during April and May. When a crop of green beans has been harvested, the remainder of Early maturing varieties should be planted in bean beetle areas ard planted as early in the spring and as late in the summer as possible.
