2 AGRICULTURE. 17 -COMMISSION Er PUBLISHED Br ae BUREAU OF 1s NUMBER 27. STATE CAPITOL. ATLANTA, GEORGIA, ae MAY 30, 1929, mae Soca a farmer from Troup. County. wrote me last week. telling. of finding 85 weevils on one*acre of cotton. Numerous:other reports have come in from middle and south Georgia telling-of the inereased number of weevils over previous years. at home Sunday and my tenants told me of weevils showing up in the fields where we had never been troubled with them before. - - Jn an average- mae year, my experience in growing cotton in south Georgia: has been; that weevils can be held down by early planting, a liberal amount of quick aeting fertilizer; and constant cultivation. Plough your cotton out and out at: east once a week and leave it. thick. Have the rows close together aud leave it thick in the drill. When you leave the cotton thick, rapid cultivation will enable-it to. mature. quickly and in this way get ahead of some of the boll weevils. Of course, planting is over this. year, the rows: are all. ready fixed and chopping i is practically over in south Georgia and is well under wey north of Macon. _ Poisoning cotton where a great many of the old weevils ATLANTA MACON | Sweet Potatoes (Yellow) Kiln Dried.$3:00 $3:00 $3.00 Cabbage, (green), crated, 100 Ibs. _. 1.25 2.00 2.00 Eges, Ga., Xtra, GOs 2.1222 2k .o4! 32 (80 Eggs, Ga., Standard, doz..-------- on. .80 1 OR Wers; Ga., Trade, doz: .-_--------- 7 Ab am 26" 7 ees, Yard. In- south Georgia, where you can plough. your cottom every . week, the top of the soil. becomes very hot and dusty, and the squares-that are punctured, with the larvae in them, fall on the hot ground: and: the larvae is killed in the square from the ex- cessive heat. This is the advantage gained from keeping the crust freshly broken. Where your cotton is already ploughed over and it has-not.rained, plough it again where the weevils. areiwit. The dust and:agitation of the cotton from the single: tree of the plough will make the punctured squares turm loose -and-fall on the ground. With. the large amount of re- -planting. that was. done in south Georgia; some poison this year is going to be necessary: Look for the infested parts of the field. Poison these first. If the infestation is general, all over the field, apply the poison every four or five days. Calcium arsenate is the best form. of. poison. that ess so-far been discovered. HUGENE TALMADGE.
