DAIRYING IN GEORGIA

I am this morning in receipt of the order of Judge Barrett

enjoining me as Commissioner of Agriculture and individually, .

from proceeding against the artificially colored shortenings
that are packed and wrapped and colored like butter. Investi-
gations by this Department have shown that there are a great
_many products on market in Georgia, which are advertised for
cooking and baking, that are taking the place of butter.

_ None of the manufacturers of these products reside in the
- state of Georgia. In the states where most of the manufac-
turers of these produets do reside the sale of these artifically
colored shortenings has been prohibited.

= New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Michigan,

~ Wisconsin, and several other states have prohibited the sale .

_ of these products that I proceeded against in Georgia.

and milk checks will grow smaller and smaller, and we will be

NUMBER 25.

I am writing this article to call the attention of the people
that are interested in the dairy business in Georgia to the nec-
essity of State Legislation that will protect our dairy inter-
ests. If you allow products placed on the market that can be
used and are used in the place of butter and that sell for one
half of the price of butter we cannot develop the dairy interests
in this State.

The attention of the Representatives and Senators of the
State of Georgia is especially called to this article.

Dont let Georgia be the dumping ground for products that
manufacturers cannot sell in the States where they are made.
If the sale of these products continues in Georgia, the cream

forced out of the dairy business in Georgia.
EUGENE TALMADGE.
