DEPARTMENT of } EUGEN E TALMADGE AGRICULTURE... COMMI as ONER= _PUBLISHED a the BUREAU OF MARKETS ~ STATE CAPITOL ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, APRIL 18, 1929. \ You will recall that at this ee last year I wrote a Naw - editorials on the outlook for 1928. I would end most of them up by cautioning the farmer that it was a Presidential elec- tion year. Thank God that is over. \ Last. year the prices on truck crops, pone. np ve baeco and hogs were very unsatisfactory. I think some manu- ei facturers did a great deal of profiteering on some of those low : _ price products. I hope that we will not have a repetition of _ o - selling the raw product below the cost of production again Z this year. South Georgia was very seriously affected by the heavy vail Ls and storms last fall and our production was greatly cur: | - tailed. North Georgia, made a good cotton crop. I am. very | _ glad to see that Providence smiled on them, as they had heen. AM o XS ae - Conditions generally all pyar the State: are from two to three weeks ahead of what they were this time last year. Re! cent showers have aided in getting stands of cotton in south Georgia. The mein thing for us to watch out for now is, to thoroughly clean the crop while it is young and before the grass gets to Jointing and running. It is the early grass that - hurts the crop. Watermelons should be pruned. A caxtoad of 30 pound average melons will bring you twice as much as a earload of 24 pound average melons. Most of you farmers know how to . prune them. Lets get busy and do it. You can make practically as much hay in yous watermelon fields as you could without the watermelons having been planted. Do not forget to plant peas or some kind of hay crops in your watermelon middles., | hard hit for several years. : iy a : ; EUGENE TALMADGE. BABY CHICKS WANTED Want 100 to 200 chicks, day old to raise on halves. Large, open yrange, ex- BAPE ET BULLEN | < sis te . ~ : TWO LITTERS A YEAR IN GEORGIA The Georgia Experiment Station recommends the more general pro- duction of two litters of pigs each year. There may be some cases where this is not best but it is thought that it is advisable in most'cases and will bring greater profits if practiced. What is the use of feeding a brood sow for six months of the year for nothing when during that time she could just as well have produced, nursed and weaned a profitable lit- ter of pigs? Most brood sows produce only one litter of pigs per year. With proper management this can be doubled and in many cases the profit per sow for the year can be more than doubled by so doing. To do this the following seasonal program should be followed as closely as possible: : May 1stWean pigs of spring litter and flush sows 10 days prior to breeding. , May 10thBreed sows for their fall litters. September 1stFarrowing of fall litters. _ November 1st-Wean pigs of fall litter and flush sows 10 days prior to breeding. November 10thBreed sows for their spring litters. March 1stFarrowing of spring litters. . g By breeding all sows at about the same times of the year the pigs will all be forrowed together. This enables the work and care to be sys- tematized and much better results may be expected and considerable time will be saved. It also means that the pigs will all reach marketable size together and will be more uniform when shipped to market. This usual- ly results in a somewhat better price being paid for them. The livestock man who once tries breeding all his sows at the same season will not be likely to want to go back to the old practice of breeding them at any time of the year that chance may suggest. ; Of course, sometimes it may not be possible to breed every sow at the same time of the year. But this does not usually happen and such exceptions should not be allowed to interrupt the above system. This system is so planned as to give the best results under average Georgia conditions. In the southern and eastern parts of the state the dates given may be moved up a few days and in the northern parts of the state where the spring pasture season opens; later, the dates may be made a few days later than given here. a The practice of flushing.the sows is to be recommended. This re- sults in more pigs and stronger. having the sow in a vigorous condition and gaining rapidly in weight at the time of breeding. This result may be secured by taking her pigs and weaning them from her at 7 to 10 days before it is desired to breed her and feed her an abundant and well-balanced ration containing sufficient protein in the form of fish meal, buttermilk, tankage or other suitable feeds until she has been bred. It is especially important at this time to allow her plenty of green feed and exercise. This can best be supplied by Briefly stated, flushing consists in good pasture. the litters to arrive. \ perienced. Chicks must be prepaid to me.
