+ DEPARTMENT of seo GEN - TALMADGE AGRICULTURE... Mens | ssi ONER* _ PUBLISHED i/ the BUREAU OF MARKETS =~ cs VOL. 13. STATE CAPITOL ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, FEB. 28, 1929. ihe FERTILIZER AND FEED 4 Most of south Georgia was severely hit by the excessive rains and the storms last year. We made very little cotton in that section and a very short feed crop. I understand that it has been difficult for some of the farmers to secure fertilizer. ne you cannot get. all of the fertilizer you want suppose.you let some of the poorest of your fields lay out. Work your best land and you can make a fairly good erop with an application of only soda or sulphate of amonia on the cotton immediately after you chop it out. This plan might pay you better in the > long run than trying to work your unprofitable lands. 2 Most of the fields that are fairly fertile and in a good state of cultivation in south Georgia will make a good corn crop without any fertilizer put on. There is more in the working than there is in the fertilizer. Dont lose heart because you -eannot buy all the fertilizer you wish but prepare your land | _ better and work it better. Remember that if you do not buy the fertilizer you wont have | it to pay for. You will at least save this much. _ aN ere is a ereat deal of interest being manifested in dairy- ras. in Georgia. I dont think that dain ying will pay unless you raise your feed at home. Now is the time to prepare for vx \ this. Put in large. feed crops and prepare to save them ana |} have your dairy feed on your own farm. 7 Another point. that I cannot impress on you too strongly is, to take interest in your compost pens. You have to begin now and have your compost pens ready for-use another year. * _ _ Ihave just learned that one company has put out fertilizer in cotton bagsthat is the I. A. C. They are putting out a 10-4-4 in cotton bags. I wish all the other fertilizer companies _ | would follow suit. as it would create a larger, eee for cotton. The different Whewnore of Commerce that we have all ~ around ovey the State could not do anything better than to -advocate to their merchants that they give orders for their | sugar and other articles to be put up in cotton bags. We farm- ers will Just have to wake up to the fact that our ladies have quit wearing cotton. Whenever we can encourage the con- | sumption of it otherwise it is good business for us to do so. If there are any other fertilizer companies besides the I. A. C. that are putting out fertilizer in cotton bags I wish some |) one would call my attention to it and I will be glad to mention | them in the Bulletin also. EUGENE TALMADGE. Hulsey was sentenced to a year and a day in the penitentiary by Judge Barrett in federal court Friday when he pleaded guilty to an indictment charging use of the mails to defraud. Hulsey said he was intoxicated when he posed as W. B. Smith at Portal, where he got his mail, and was Hulsey at Statesboro, where he cashed his checks after advertising goods for sale, getting the checks and fail- ing to send any goods. Hulsey committed these frauds through the Market Bulletin. Im- mediately upon receipt of letters from parties he had swindled we got in touch with the postal authorities and they arrested him.
