DEPARTMENT 9 9 EUGENE TALMADGE PUBLISHED t/ the a OF MARKETS .~ ) AGRICULTURE... COMMISSIONER = STATE CAPITOL ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, JAN. 24, 1929. NUMBER 10. _I received a telegram on the 21st of this month from Senator Walter F. George advising me of the proclamation issued by _ President Coolidge increasing the tariff on imported peanuts, under the flexible provision of the law, which raised the tariff on peanuts in the shell from three cents to four and a quarter - eents per pound, and on shelled peanuts from four cents per pound to six cents. This proclamation pfactically insured the : schedule being fixed at the above figures. --' This raises the rate on the importation of peanuts and will hes the prices this fall. Plant more peanuts in Georgia. We did not have enough in the state this year. Peanuts are an economical crop. You can at least get the cost of production left from the tops. If you do not clear anything from your peanuts but the hay it will be a good erop to grow. The above is picturing the dark side of the proposition, that is, where you make a short crop. If you make a good crop of peanuts it will pay you as well as a cotton oe or almost any other crop. It is not essential that you buy commercial fertilizer to put under your peanuts. If the soil has reached the point that it wont make you a good crop of peanuts without buying com- mercial fertilizer, let it lay out for about a year. Of course, add gathering on even a sorry crop out of selling the nuts. If you will use pains and care you will have a fine lot of hay _ when I say let it lay out I mean you must see that it does not \ TARIFF ON FARM PRODUCTS wash away. Look after your ditches arid terraces and you will find that the land will i improve more from one years rest than from most anything else. We hope to be able to secure a tariff on different vegetable oils that are imported into this country from the Philippine Is: lands and the Hastern countries, which come in competition. with the peanut oils, cottonseed oils and hog lard. It might be well for any readers of this.editorial 46 qrite their Genataee and Congressmen in regard to this. . Another matter that is to come up before Congress on the 4th and 5th of next month is placing a prohibitive tariff on jute. We now cover all of our cotton bales with jute. A great many of our bags are made from jute and lots of jute is put in our carpets and rugs. This comes into our country duty free. Cotton would be more suitable for almost all the purposes that are now requiring jute. It might be a good idea for ag many farmers as possible to wire Congressman KR. E. Cox at Washington, endorsing this movement, as he is the leader of the Coe delegation on securing this duty on jute. If we can find a way to consume an additional million or two million bales of cotton, which I believe a prohibitive tariff on jute would cause, and at the same time, reduce the acreage in ecot- ton by planting more peanuts, we would be headed in the right direction. We are making some ene Tormane on this very program.
