NUMBER 38. __ : Z = = x = -eonstant stream of insects going into the fire. place. Yf Day before yesterday my attention was called to the fact that some parties are going around over the State trying to borrow money - and also trying to sell stock in a Tobacco Association and are making the statement that they are working in conjunction with the Bureau of Markets or the Department of Agriculture of the State. a We havent anyone working in conjunction with the Bureau of. Markets of the Department of Agriculture who is trying. to borrow money or sell stock of any kind. This is a notice to the publi that thee men representing them- selves as such are sailing under false colors. Ysterday a good friend of mine called my attention to a custom that was followed, when he was a boy, at this time of the year. He said you know, Talmadge, there are all kinds of insects with us now, this is the insect time of the year, and went on to state that back 50 years ago at this time of year they would kindle fires all around the place and let them burn through the night and you could see a You have noticed this yourself, : never thought that it had been practiced to kill out in- sects but this good friend told me that it had and if every farmer would follow this he would see a great reduction of insects about. his Thisis the time of year that they are breeding more than any other and the night fires could certainly do no harm if you do not put them too close to your fences and outhouses and they might de-: stroy a good many insects in a cheap and effective way. A FEW LITTLE THINGS a annie You know a painted country home with outhouses ete, white. washed, is the prettiest sight in the world. I am going to give you a formula for whitewash that is cheap and if you will put it on your trees, your fences, and outhouses, you will think more. of your place and everybody else will too and will like to drive by and look at it. When I was 17 years old, I used some whitewash made by this formula on the grove fence and I noticed it there ten years after and it looked like paint, Here it gos, it is approved by the Federal Government and is used a great deal around their cantonments: Slake in boiling water one-half bushel of quicklime, keeping it just fairly covered with water during the process. Strain to remove the sediment, which will fall to the bottom, and add to it one peek of salt dissolved in warm water, 8 pounds of ground rice boiled in water to a thin paste, 1-2 pound of Spanish whiting, and a pound of glue dissolved im warm water. Mix the different ingredients thor- oughly and let the mixture stand for several days. When ready to use, apply it hot. If a less quantity is desired, use the same propor- tions. For buildings on the farm, fences, etc., this will to a great extent answer the purpose of paint and at a much reduced cost. The rice flour and glue make the whitewash stick. Rain and freezing have slight effect on this whitewash and it may be pat on with a sprayer. er sprayed) hold the nozzle is or 20 inches from the sprayed sur- ace / EUGENE TALMADGE.
