DEPARTMENT of | ae EU GENE TALMADGE. | AGRICULTURE..<3 COMMISSIONER: PUBLISHED. 2 the BUREAU _ OF MARKETS ~- | Se = = VOL. 11 STATE CAPITOL ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, J ULY 19, 1928, NUMBER 35. ~ : = = as 4 a 3 ; eo 2 . | < i : : poe : eqe , Reports on the Analysis of Fertilizer Samples The average number of fertilizer samples inken each year Mr. Farmer, if you had _a sample of your fertilizer drawn prior to this year was about 5,000. This year, with 40 short to be forwarded to this Department prior to April 9th of this term inspectors and 6 long term fertilizer inspectors, 12, 529 year and have not yet received a report from the chemical lab- official samples have been taken. oratory, let us know as there is some error in the mailing, and Up to date, Saturday, July 14th, we have mailed out to the farmers and fertilizer manufacturers reports on all samples of fertilizer taken prior to April 9th of this year. The number | that we have reported out up until to-day is 6,989. There should be some arrangement made whereby the _ farmer could receive the report on his fertilizer and calcium arsenate quicker. We have the latges st chemical laboratory in the South, but its capacity is only 66Samples a day. We can- not properly run a sample of fertilizer by artificial light; as > the chemist making the determination has to watch the coloring effects very closely to make an accurate analysis. We have analyzed more samples during the first six months this year than has ever been analyzed by the chemical laboratory in 12 months before. We recently engaged the services of another laboratory under the direction of the State Chemist so as to get these analysis on samples out to the farmers as quickly as possible. I want every farmer to know that he will get the analysis on n. his sample of fertilizer. we want to check up on it. , I wish that all the farmers who come to Atlanta, who are interested in analysis would come around to the Capitol and go through the laboratory and they will understand how technical running a fertilizer sample is and the length of time it consumes in running one sample.. Dr. W. A. Morgan, the State Chemist, sche has this woes in: charge is present while I am writing this editorial. He stated to me that he expects to furnish the analysis on all of the sam- ples that he now has by the middle of September. If Dr..Mor- gan succeeds in doing this, hevhicad laboratory, and he and his assistants will have ac- complished a great service for the farmer. Lastremember this, I am going to see that you get a re- port on every sample of fertilizer that is sent in here. If you dont get it, write me. POTATO PEACHES NEAR VETCH MAY. BE ATTACKED BY CORN-EAR WORM Green peaches may be attacked by the corn-ear worm if it has been feeding on vetch near by, and the vetch is not turned under. early enough. The corn-ear worm occurs throughout the South and is primarily a pest of corn, tomatoes, tobacco cotton, and legumes. On vetch and other legumes it feeds in colonies, and when these crops are not turn- ed under early enough, are left for seed, or are cut late, the worms as- sume the army-worm habit and move in armies to adjacent peach or- chards or fields of other crops. Be- eause of this habit corn-ear worms are sometimes confused with army worms. ; The Bureau of Entomology of the United States Department of Agri- culture noted that in 1926 corn-ear worms did considerable damage to peaches and other crops in Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina. Con- siderable vetch was grown in the South that year, and peach orchards adjoining fields in which vetch was not turned under soon enough or was allowed to go to seed were mater- ially damaged by the worms devour- ing the green peaches as they march- ed across them. This occurred from the middle of May to the first part of June. In one orchard in southern Georgia the corn-ear worms practi- cally destroyed the crop of peaches 7X x eas 202 SEARS on 4,000 voung trees. Vetch had been planted between the tree rows and the grower had failed to turn it under at the right time. In another case the worms attacked a peach orchard from hay in a near-by barn, where they hatched after the hay was cut and stored. Control measures consist in con- structing a deep furrow around the orchard or in the path of advance of the worms when they are seen to istart as an army. This furrow ditching machine. One side should be steep, and postholes should be pro- vided at intervals in the furrow to entrap the worms. After the worms get into an orchard poisoned-bran bait or spraying or dusting with lead arsenate is recommended.U. S. Dept. Agriculture. . - FRUITS FOR SALE Peaches in cartons and crates.
