DEPARTMENT A f EWUGENE eo \ AGRICULTURE. COMM | ssl IONER 5 . 43 PUBLISHED Dil: 3 BUREAU. OF MARKETS ~ STATE CAPITOL ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, JUNE 14, 1928. anes NUMBER 31. ae -We Pec in Giserc 110 County Agents, commonly referred to as an farm demonstration agents. These men are paid jointly from an appropriation of the Fedefal Government and the county funds where _ they have an agent employed. A great many farmers that I know are of the opinion that county agents do not do any good. Some years ago in south Georgia there was a good deal of litigation enjoining some of the counties from levying a tax for the purpose of paying farm demonstration agents and home economic agents. This litigation resulted in the passing of an act by the legislature making it legal for the counties to pay the county agents. Now here are a few things I want to talk to the farmers shotit. The County Agents success partly depends upon the spirit in e, which the farmers Poe them and upon their calling on them for assistance. a system establishing selling cotton and other staple products. _ when the farmer began to raise other crops most of us were ignor- ant as to the proper fertilizer, the proper seed, the proper pack and county who could and would obtain this)information for the farmer his time and attention on this. law was passed making it legal to have the farm demonstration agents _~ in the different counties of the State. You farmers who do no think that a county agent can be of any any information, to call on a You have to work anybody that you Georgia is fast becoming a State of diversified farming. We have But so that the individual farmer would be required to spend so much of. This was the basic reason that the the plac to sell, and it became essential to have one man in each i os assistance to you, make it a point when you really need and want | = a2 Wack of the Farm Demonstration Agent hive, I a8 care who it 3 is, and the man you eall on is the man who _will become more interested in: his work. I would like to state to the eredit of the county agents that they have been a great help to the Bureau of Markets in conducting sales over the State, which this last month ran over $200,000. We have a great many inquiries every day from different farmers over the State who want to know where they can-purchase Calcium Arsenate or where they can purchase certain varieties of seed. We also have inquiries from a good many farmers in regard to the stand- ~ ard pack. of certain fruits and vegetables. A great many inquiries that we have are for the address of certain chain stores that will give a fair deal on farm products. We also have a good many ealls from farmers who wish their milk tested, to ascertain the butter fat that it contains so they: will know if the purchaser is giving them a fair deal. In numbers of these cases if the farmer would make it a point to see-their county agents in regard to these matters, the agent could take the matter up with the department and knowing the volume of business that would be done on these different matters we could ~ render more effective service by serving a great. many at one time. Remember, in conclusion, that I always welcome personal letters addressed to me on any farm problem in the State of Georgia and they receive my prompt attention. The only suggestion I have to make is that we could render much more effective service if we knew that the same problem existed in the same community with a great many of the farmers. In that case we would send a man in person to give such assistance as was possible. The volume of it can be ar- rived at better by all the farmers having a closer relationship with their county agent and suagerine) to him that he get after us when you need our services.
