DEPARTMENT ; eS = E oe \. AG RICULTURE.. COMMISSIONER'S -PeBLisseD- tae the BUREAU oF MARKETS -~~ C.H.BISHOP, DIRECTOR _ Stare CAPITOL ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, ae 24, 1927. a - Potatoes, Irish, THANKSGIVING DAY | \ iy 1621 ane first. Thanksgiving Day services in America were held by a little band of P lgrams at Plymouth Rock, now in the _ state of Massachusetts. This little band of people were giving thanks, that they had been enabled to make their first crop of - Indian corn and vegetables in the bleak wilderness of what is now America, without being tomahawked by the Indians. The _- settlement was made at Plymouth Rock for only one purpose, 1 that they might worship God according to the dictates of their conscience. Over a hundred years after this celebration at Plymouth Rock, Georgia was settled, and the great spirit of the settlemen i in Georgia was a home for the oppressed of the earth. 8 National Holiday. o . It is well for us to cons: der, at Pee the dtlereht things we a have to be thankful for. > First, are your loved ones ane cand you and in acod health? Second, do you still have a mother and father, pestilence or famine, drouths or floods in our land. Fourth, Do you realize that, Georgia S curse is her cel-matie blessings, in which no one can freeze or starve. Arent these some things for which. to give thanks to an i Erna n God? * + i } Since 1632 Thanksgiving Day has been observed as and are they in good health? Third, do you realize that we have no Za few things. 3 Looking backward dver the year 1927Let us Seumerate: oo: It is the most profitable year that the watermelon, cantaloupe, peach and apple growers have had in the state of Georgia n the past three years. It was a profitable year for tobacco farmers. Pimento peppers made good. This is a com- ing industry in Georgia and deserves consideration in sections: adapted for peppers. The cotton erop of Georgia, as a whole, was good. It was especially good in Northeast Georg | a. Iam very proud of this, because they were severely hit by a drouth _ for two years preceding 1927. The price of cotton is not what it should be. But, is not 20 cents a pound better than 8 cents? Corn is short in the great corn belt but good in Georgia. Cat- tle are bringing a good price. Hogs are not bringing what they should. Kill them at home cure the hams, the middlings and the shouders. Cook the jowls with some collards and tur- | nip greens. Give thenks for the things enumerated. The great thing to be thankful for, :s heal h, living in a Christian and civilized country surrounded by schools and churches, and where intelligent effort is recognized .a and appreciated more than any as on the face of the earth. ge EUGENE TALMADGE, .
