ky, DEPARTMENT of _ EUGENE TALMADGE PUBLISHED by the BUREAU _ OF MARKETS -~ VOU 11 STATE CAPITOL ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, MAY 24, 1928. NUMBER 28 T . e Piguce Right Smart Ahead On May 12th of this year, Mr. H. T. Brice, of Quitman, Georgia, sold through the Bureau of Markets, a car of cabbage, containing 23468 pounds at three cents per pound FOB Quitman. This car was sold to the Evans Produce Company of Anniston, Alabama. I dont know how much acreage it required to make this carload of cabbage, but I do know that you can get returns of from two to three hundred dollars per acre at three cents per pound FOB ship- ping point. You can also grow a good crop of corn, or practically any other crop that you wish, on the same land when you take the cab- bage off in the spring. It is already fertilized, by having applied the fertilizer for the cabbage. Figure on this next spring, but dont everybody now plant cabbage! We have had several calls for carloads of beans. They will bring more money than cabbage. They are a little more tedious to grow and to gather, but will bring you more money. We could have been rolling several carloads before now if the farmers in the different sections had thought of it and planted them. _ Another commodity which grows in south Georgia well and is only killed by the cold once in ten years is the bunch English pea You plant these in October, slightly below level, work them out next spring and you will be shipping them in March and April, They will bring you more than the cabbage or beans either. : jpeeae a MARKET REPORT 7) oe 4 | OF GEORGIA. PRODUCTS . ..*. ss | There are numerous other vegetables that we can grow in our State as good as anywhere on the globe. DID YOU KNOW THAT they are buying roasting ear corn in Atlanta now which is shipped from Texas? It seems a long way and there are heavy freight charges on it. Farmers of Georgia are overlooking something good. One of the best sources of information for the farmers is to, go. and pay a visit to Produce Row when you are visiting Atlanta or other cities, find out from th produce men what the best truck crop is for you to plant in the winter. Get them to tell you what is in demand at the different seasons of the year and the kind of pack- age they should be packed i in, and the prices they should bring. It would be well for farmers to organize on this matter to keep from planting the same thing or for the farmers to confer with the Bureau of Markets as to what they should plant and they can give them information as to what crop or crops seem to be OF most in- terest to the planters and buyers. You can make more money on practically any kind of produce > that you will grow than you can oncotton, but it requires the owner of the farm to live on the farmand give it his personal supervision. with the help of his family in working and picking, to make it profi- table.
