PARTMENT 9/ _ EUGENE TALMADGE. i, During the last two weeks the Cotton States have experienced the heaviest rains and most unfavorable weather seen in years. April is the month in which most of the cotton is planted and unfavorable weather conditions in April and the first part of May usually indi- cate a short cotton crop. __ On April 23rd the Commissioner of Agriculture of Georgia sent telegrams to the Commissioners of Agriculture of North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas and Texas, as follows: Planting in Georgia especially of cotton is delayed more than I have known of in past eighteen years. We have had incessant rain- | can not be planted within the next month on account of the ground . being wet and boggy. your state regagrding cotton especially and the- outlook of its - eultivation. He : z 7 = To this telegram replies have been received, as follows: ae sS Raleigh, N. C., April 24th, 1928. Hon. Eugene Talmadge: eS aS sc 5 Thanks for your wire. The information you request is a little difficult to give. In some sections of North Carolina cotton was planted on schedule time. In others it was two weeks late. Indica- tions are, however, that our crop will be planted in ample time. We plant a good deal later than Georgia. WILLIAM A. GRAHAM, Commissioner of Agriculture. : | Columbia, S. C., April 28rd, 1928. Hon. Eugene Talmadge: ae : Your wire. Cotton in Seuth Carolina is late in sand sections. Planting finished but too wet and cold for seed to germinate. Con- siderable acreage to be planted in clay sections. In some communities nothing planted situation somewhat difficul. If wet weather con- __ tinues probably some acreage intended for cotton will be planted in | other crops. = J. W. SHEALY, e Commissioner of Agriculture. _ ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, MAY 3, 1928. THE CROP OUTLOOK . fall in Georgia since February 1st. There are sections where cotton Please wire me immediately conditions in ~ AGRICULTURE... COMMISSIONER == oo = Montgomery, Ala., April 23rd, 1928. Hon. Eugene Talmadge: : No complete information officially at hand here concerning exact cotton situation. Bad weather has undoubtedly damaged the .....00k but can not say to what extent. 3 Ss. M. DUNWOODY, Commissioner of Agriculture. Jackson, Miss., April 24th, 1928. Hon. Eugene Talmadge: ere _ Condition just as deplorable in Mississippi as described in your state. Much heavy rain last two weeks and land overflowed. Much re-p.anting must be done with shortage of seed. J. C. HOLDEN, Commissioner of Agriculture. Baton Rouge, La., April 24th, 1928 Hon. Eugene Talmadge: Bee ne Half of cotton crep will have to be planted over. Seed scarce. = 3 HARRY D. WILSON, : a Commissioner of Agriculture. Austin, Texas, April 24th, 1928 Hon, Eugene Talmadge: a \ : ecg Cotten in Central and South Texas killed by recent frost. It must be planted over and this makes two weeks later and more sub- ject to boll weevil infestation. Planting late and unfavorable con- dition in. other parts of the state. Acreage about the same as last: year. ~' GEORGE B. TERRELL, ie Commissioner of Agriculture. In addition a letter was received from Harry D. Wilson, Com- missioner of Agriculture of Louisiana, stating that the cotton crop in Louisiana is delayed very much. In fact, 50 per cent will have to be re-planted on account of cold weather. Also that seed is very scarce and their crop is going to be quite late. It will be seen from the above that with the except'on of North Carolina, the prospect for the cotton crop at the present time is very unfavorable. Large quantities of fertilizers have been used a great deal of which is lost on acccunt of excessive rains. ae = + ATUANTA Sweet Potatoes (Yellow) bulk, 100 Ibs, ---+---------- $ as Trish Potatoes, sack, 100 Ibs. -.-----------=~-----++---------- | Cabbage, green, crated, 100 lbs. ------ fone a ee Ss Eggs, Ga.
