ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, JAN. 12, 1928. mune It is well for all farmers to realize that {his issa year for electing a President of the United States. Past history has proven that these years are generally accompanied by finan- cial depressions and uncertain business conditions until after | - the election. I would hate to see a large cotton crop made in the South this year. A ten million bale crop will bring more jj .money than a fifteen million bale crop: _ The one receipt that will be absolutely safe for you is to tle over to sell. What you do cultivate, cultivate good, and - fertilize well and wisely. If there is any old impoverished land on your farm that has not been making you a profit in the past years, terrace it well and let it lay out. Land ought to be rest- ed every. seven years anyway. Georgia farms are at a disadvantage with a great many oth- || er states, for the reason that she is compelled to use'a com- mercial fertilizer to most of her crops. Georgia, Alabama, _ North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida use about half of _ the commercial fertilizer that is used in the United States. That leaves forty-three states pitted against five. North Car- olina heads the list, using 1,300,000 tons of guano; Georgia | Pialltcs t For Sale and Wanted GEORGIA PRODUCTS. Hl using 700, 000 tons; Alabama comes faa using | 600 ,000 tons; and Florida comes fifth, using 400,000 tons. My advice to Georgia farmers is that where they do buy fer- tilizer, to buy the very best. ~ are being put out now that carry very little natural carrier There are several grades that and practically no artificial filler. ; I have seen good results obtained from as high class fertili- zer as a 15-5-5. I wrote an editorial about three weeks ago about the German fertilizer, nitrophosko, which which analy- sis runs as high as 36-16-16. The best thing to do is to buy your materials and mix them at home. If you dont take time to do this, buy high grade Just remember this, that at the average production of cotton in Georgia and the average price of fertilizer, it re- quires about four cents a pound out of the cotton to pay the | fertilizer bill. This could largely be eliminated if the farmers of Georgia would plant more cover crops, such as Vetch, Rye, Austrian Peas, ete. Also, the farmers of Georgia should take more pains with their compost piles. In conclusion, dont try to plant more than you ean culti- vate well, fertilize well, and gather when it needs it. Dont go too medi in debt, as this is a Presidential Election Year. : EUGENE Aes Farm Employment - ee = a : : _-.- Page 10 Womans Department fe. 3 el eee A ~Womans Department oe : oe : Page 12 second-Hand Machinery Wanted, Beans and Peas, Pecans, Syrup, Cotton Seed, for saleand _ eG 2 ~~ Wwained 20 2 Se 722. PAGE FOUR eae GEORGIA | on : MARKET BULLETIN of Published weekly by The BUREAU OF MARKETS C. H, Bishop, Director | DEPARTMENT OF . AGRICULTURE Eugene Talmadge, Commissioner 1 hursday, J ee 12, 1928 Entered as second class matter February~ 15, 1922, at the Postoffice at Atlanta, Georgia, under the Act of Jume 6, 1900. Accepted for mailing at special rate of postage provided for in section 1108, Act of October 3, =e ivitoncanis of farm produce and appur- tenances, admissable under postal -regula- tions, inserted one time on each request, and repeated omly when request is accompanied by new copy gf advertisement. Limited space will not permit insertion of ' unimportant. advertisements. Under legisla- tive act the Market Bureau does not assume any responsibility for any advertisements ap- pearing in the Bulletin, or transaction re- _ sulting therefrom. o Circulation, Advertising and Services: of the aes of Markets and_ this en are | Pree of Charge. 3 =< | IMPORTANT NOTICE | POSTAL REGULATIONS PRO- - | HIBIT THE ADVERTISING OF | SAW MILL BOILERS, STEAM ENGINES, SAW MILLS AND OTHER COMMODITIES OF SIM- | ILAR NATURE. A NUMBER OF _| ADS HAVE BEEN RECENTLY RECEIVED | THAT THE MARKET BULLE- | TIN PUBLISH THEM. THE ABOVE MENTIONED REGULA- TION EXPLAINS WHY THEY | | FAILED TO APPEAR AS_ RE. eee oS ANOTHER SOURCE OF FARM . INCOME Now is the time for the farmer to give special attention to his home orchards. He should not - neglect winter spraying, pruning and setting out such trees, vines, etc,, that may give him a succes- sion and variety of fruits. Too much can not be said as to] value of the use of fruit in the home from a health standpoint. Not only is it advisable for the _ farmer to be in position to furnish these to his own family, but he fresh and direct to consumers in small towns that can not be sup- plied in ear lots by the commer. cial orchards. The scuppernong, so far, is prae- tically disease free and will grow. in every section of the State. The possibilities of marketing these . . fresh and bottling the fresh: juice is great and so far practically un- |; 2 touched. - Much may also be said for the ~ Georgia fig. The consuming pub- _ lie should certainly have the op- 4 full y armen dainty, A vast amount of feed is wast- ed by being fed to eull hens or hens that have laid out.? . With a little careful study, it is an easy matter to select the layer from a flock. After this is | done, all the special attention and jfeed may go to swell the profit from the layers. Write to the State College or see your county agent for definite information. Then market your non-layers at the next co-operative sale while the price on hens is good. | SETTING A GOOD EXAMPLE Now that city consumers are being urged to buy Georgia pro- ducts, it would be well for the farmers to. consider their attitude toward these. Since the Georgia farmer buys a tremendous amount | Maine to Idaho, | prunes from the West REQUESTING }|_ prejoice in an effort to portunity of buying the delight- of produce from the store, he should consider the source of these products if he expects to help himself and his farmer friends. A survey of the stock of coun- try stores will usually find black | eyed peas and lima beans from California, Irish potatoes from New York State, apples from Washington or Oregon, flour. from Tennessee, dried peaches and eanned goods from | nearly any state -OtNer: than his own. buyer demands. If he does not have a supply of Georgia products the consumer is usually to blame. Since Georgia farmers constitute the largest body of consumers in the state, in all fairness, if they |wish the ety housewife to use Georgia products, ug them set the example. eo OF INTEREST TO WOMEN ' The space given in the Market Bulletin devoted to the sale of flowers illustrates the amount of interest that is manifested by Georgia women in the eulture of flowers, .__ Flower gardeners are enriching the'r garden spots with well rot- ted mold and fertilizers. This will prepare the soil for a luxuri- ous growth during the spring and lsu . should have a surplus to market |. mmer_months, It is a compliment to the onl- tured women of Georgia that they beautify their homes and surroundings. By {so doing they not only beautify their own homes but also favora- bly impress the passerby who is cherred by the beauty of the home gardens. We wish to. recommend the planting of hardy old fashioned flowers and-to further commend those who have already made such plans. Old fashioned flowers prov_-de a succession of blooming plants throughout the summer. season, The P ; es MARKET B a Georgia \ grapes and. small fruits so great- ly appreciated by Georgia people. -| 25e lb. or 15 a half cabbage from! and his}. The Zenia is a hardy and pro- fusely blooming flower that re- quires very little labor in its cul- tivation.
