BLACK, COMMISSIONER WEDNESDAY, MAY 4, 2022 VOL. 105, NO. 9 COPYRIGHT 2022 Late freeze takes a toll on Georgia produce Growers expect lower yields, but remain hopeful By Jay Jones jay.jones@agr.georgia.gov More than a month after a late frost damaged fruit and vegetable crops across Georgia, farmers are still trying to measure the effects it will have on their harvest. All agreed it would be down, but it remains unclear how much. The March 13 freeze brought temperatures into the 20s for Georgia and across the Southeast. A warming trend early in March did not help. Many plants had started to bud out and bloom with all signs of an early spring. Brandon Wade of Alma Nursery and Berry Farms said the freeze was tough on blueberry growers. He explained the speed of the cold front, high winds and low humidity did not allow growers a chance to protect the bushes, which is done with overhead irrigation. Wade said the job now is to determine whether the berries will be good enough to sell. For his farm, the early ripening varieties were affected the most. It will be a wait-and-see approach for the second and third pickings during the season 10 0 t1h9A17nniv2e0r1s7ary A blueberry bush shows signs of freeze damage, where the berries should be green at the early stage of growth. The March 13 freeze damaged fruit and vegetable crops across Georgia. (Ann Wildes/ Georgia Berry Exchange) that goes through early June. "That's my big question. Where are we going to fall on quality?" Wade said. "Things are shaping up okay. We've seen the damage that we would have seen historically from a freeze like this, but at the same time, as soon as we get a couple of pickings into a variety, we can really know where we stand. The first bit is damaged, then it gets better afterward." Wade, who also serves as president of the Georgia Berry Exchange, said it is difficult to gauge the effect of the freeze on all of blueberry growers. He explained that the blueberry sector in Georgia is a diverse mix of large operations and small growers. "Some of the folks who were successful will say 80 percent with a 20 percent loss, and more places like my family farm were more like 60 percent saved, 40 percent lost," Wade said. "I think that our number is a little bit more representative of what is out there," he said. Sam Watson's farm grows more than 700 acres of pro- See LATE FREEZE, page 16 Market pressures hurt growers' bottom lines By Jay Jones jay.jones@agr.georgia.gov Along with dealing with bad weather at the start of the growing season, Georgia farmers are contending with market pressures that they say will make this a challenging year in the field and on the bottom line of their ledgers. Chris Butts, executive vice president of the Georgia Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association, said a complete picture of the freeze would not be available until after this year's harvest, but it is expected to be significant. Growers are now moving forward this season with similar concerns for mar- ket prices as they had last year. Butts explained that prices are good and profitable for producers at the start of the season but when imported fruit and vegetables being arriving, prices decrease. "When (prices) drop, we would see them drop below production, what it would cost to produce a box of cucumbers or squash or zucchini. When prices drop below production costs, that is when we get into trouble," Butts said. "There were instances of that last year, and we're afraid that may happen again this year. We're hopeful that we will start out strong." A new factor for farmers to consider this year is increased costs for agricultural inputs due to ongoing supply chain delays created by the COVID-19 pandemic. Sam Watson of Chill C Farms in Moultrie said inputs weighed on his mind as the freeze and wet weather delayed production at his farm. "We continue to get letters from (suppliers) that say, `Due to this or that, we're going up on our product,'" Watson said. "We don't have anybody to send letters to. We can't go up on a box of bell peppers or cabbage, yet we get (higher prices) every day from our suppliers." Lawton Pearson of Pearson Farms said they are "taking it on the chin" with the higher input costs for everything every- thing from equipment and fuel to fertilizer and pesticides. Pearson said he expects their costs to rise by 20-30 percent this year. He added that there's little room to save money on a crop, especially with peaches. "I talked to a friend and showed him a piece of a little peach tree, and I said, `That little peach tree doesn't know anything about five-dollar diesel, and it doesn't care,'" Pearson said. "I don't feel like I've ever overspent trying to make a peach crop or grow a peach tree. I want to do what's necessary, and that hasn't changed. So, my costs are going to be up." Lameiras UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Take a gander at the egg case at your local grocery and you are likely to find a variety of labels that go far beyond medium, large, extra-large, or jumbo. Cage-free, pasture-raised, vegetarian-fed, free-range, humanely raised, organic the variety and combination of descriptors can be confusing and cost you more at checkout. So, what's a consumer to do? Casey Ritz and Prafulla Regmi, experts in the Department of Poultry Science at the University of Georgia's College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, agree that information is the best tool in selecting the eggs that are right for you. What does it all mean? Regmi, an assistant professor who specializes in poultry welfare programs and research, explained that food labels influence consumers' purchasing behavior, but the Cage free? Pasture raised? Free range? Choosing eggs in the supermarket can get complicated fast. (UGA CAES Photo) definitions for some labels aren't regulated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. "Welfare-related labels on eggs or meat are confusing, or in some cases outright misleading. Claims such as `humanely raised' do not provide any information on how birds are reared because there are no standard metrics to define what `humanely raised' means," he said. Most of the certifications for certain labels comes from private, third-party auditing organizations such as certifiedhumane.org or the Global Animal Partnership which have developed their own standards for humane farm animal care. Other producers follow the standards set by the respective commodity councils for each product, such as the United Egg Producers and the National Chicken Council. "These third-party auditors follow their own guidelines and, most of the time, their audit protocols are more expansive than those set by the National Chicken Council or the United Egg Producers," Regmi said. "The extent to which these protocols differ is quite broad." "When a label says cage-free, that does not necessarily mean that those birds are raised in a pasture-style system. They may still be raised indoors, but have access to common floor scratch areas," Ritz added. WEDNESDAY, MAY 4, 2022 FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN 404-656-3722 agr.georgia.gov PAGE 9 Georgie's Drive Thru Byron Season three of A Fork in the Road is in production for GPB Filming is underway for the third season of A Fork in the Road, a journey through Georgia agriculture that airs on Georgia Public Broadcasting channels statewide as well as online at https://georgiagrown.com/forkintheroad/ The line-up for season three will include episodes on blueberries and forestry, both big businesses in Georgia. Producer David Zelski recently traveled to South Georgia, visiting blueberry growers Donald Mixon in Waycross and Albert Wildes in Alma, and filming a timber harvesting operation by Greg Mullis of Mullis Logging out of Hoboken. Check your local TV listings for air times on Georgia Public Broadcasting, or catch up on current and past episodes online at https://georgiagrown.com/forkintheroad/. Hello! I'm Georgie, the Georgia Grown mascot. I travel thru Georgia promoting the Peach State's No. 1 industry, agriculture! Alongside the highways and byways of this beautiful state are some lost and forgotten treasures. Over time, many of those treasures have slowly been reclaimed by the earth with a lot of help from nature and economic recession. Two of these lost treasures hide in plain sight near Byron: a racetrack where Richard Petty, Ken Ragan, Bobby Allison, and David Pearson once battled, next to a field where Jimi Hendrix and the Allman Brothers once performed. Middle Georgia Raceway is a half-mile paved oval that hosted yearly NASCAR races but has now sat dormant since 1984 when the last official race held there was won by local hero Ken Ragan. Except for the occasional gathering or television shoot, the track is silent and slowly disintegrating into dust and jungle. During the July 4th weekend of 1970, the field in front of the track hosted the Second Atlanta Pop Festival and was attended by one of the largest crowds ever gathered in the state of Georgia. All that remains of the festival is a historic marker by the highway and the fading memories of the young fans who attended it. Albert Wildes of Bacon County examines blueberries in the field. (Andy Harrison/GDA) Producer David Zelski films David Mixon of Mixon Farms near Waycross for Season 3 of A Fork in the Road. The show, sponsored by Georgia Grown, airs on Georgia Public Television stations statewide. The fields were alive with rock `n roll when a pop festival came to Byron in 1970. (Lee Lancaster/GDA) Albert and Ann Wildes of Bacon County renovated a historic 19th century farmhouse on their property. Hal Rowe with Langdale Forestry talks timber for an upcoming episode of A Fork in the Road. "Humans are the number one cause of wildfires in Georgia," said Georgia Forestry Commission Director Tim Lowrimore. "As outdoor recreation season begins, we need to lower the risk of wildfire by paying close attention to weather conditions and safety precautions. Everyone needs to work together to ensure an enjoyable and fire-free summer." Late Freeze: Full impact of cold weather won't be known until harvest is done Continued From Page 1 duce in south Colquitt County, and he said the freeze damaged a lot of cabbage out in the field. He said the cabbage that wasn't wholly lost was stunted. Watson explained it remains to be seen if those plants will recover. "The cabbage was fairly young, and (the freeze) just burned it," Watson said. "When that happens, it's a matter of whether it has that weight in the cabbage. It needs that green, lush growth to draw energy in and make that heavy head. We lost a lot of that foliage in the cold, and it definitely slowed the production down. We're going to be late." Watson added that more rain than usual in April did not help. They had to wait to begin planting tomatoes, squash, bell peppers and other vegetables until the water-logged fields dried out. Watson explained that he and other produce farmers will plant in waves to get in as many harvests as possible during the growing season. "The multiple plantings also keep the supply stable," he said. "We want to avoid the humps and gaps." But Watson said the spring weather put those plans off schedule. "We had to put some plantings off, our early plantings, due to the cold. We saw it coming and held plants in the greenhouse. That put us behind," Watson added. "Now, the rain came in, and we've had to wait. We've been playing catch-up since we started." Lawton Pearson of Pearson Farms in Fort Valley said the peach trees got off in decent shape from the freeze. The concern now is production. "It's still hard to say. We know we lost a significant portion of the early crop, it's not there at all, but a lot of what remains to be seen is what's left. Is it going to make?" Pearson said. Pearson explained that their peach trees were beginning the process of bearing fruit. However, Pearson said some trees have stopped growing or "dried up" in peach growing parlance. He said it's something of a mystery why peach trees dry up, but the March freeze is the likely cause this year. "I think we're incredibly blessed to have any peaches . ..." - Lawton Pearson, Pearson Farms "It's probably due to the freeze. It didn't kill it, but it did something to it to prevent it from setting. So, we still feel like we have better than half a crop, overall; better in July than in June, and better in June than in May," Pearson said. Pearson added it is rare for peach growers to experience a year of no frost, and the event in March was different than a usual freeze. He said March freezes are typically threeday events, with moisture levels keeping frost around longer. "This one moved out real quick, and the only reason we have any peaches, honestly, is because the second night it was hovering around freezing and no frost. The air was really dry," Pearson said. "And then the second day, this would be Tuesday morning, there was a low pressure system in the gulf that pushed everything out." Pearson then added, "Overall, I think we're incredibly blessed to have any peaches because it was 22 degrees for a while, and we were in the middle of the bloom. That could have killed all of them, and it just didn't, so we've still got some stuff to look at, and we'll see how it shakes out." Decoding: Poultry housing has no impact on nutritional value of eggs Continued From Page 1 For labels like antibiotic- or hormone-free, the definitions can be mildly misleading. "Even in certain cases when antibiotics are used to treat infections in chickens, they have to go through a withdrawal period during which the producer is not allowed to sell eggs or meat from those animals," Regmi said. "The biggest concerns among consumers are antibiotics or added growth hormones. Exogenous (external) hormones are not used in the poultry industry at all because there is no need. We have birds that naturally produce the intended amounts of eggs and meat based on genetic potential and what nutrition and environment we give them." Selling points While it is valuable to consumers to have an idea of where their food comes from and how it is produced, some labeling boils down to industrywide marketing strategies. "Some of these labels are meant to drive profit by tapping into consumers' perceptions and driving demand, but perception does not necessarily mean you have informed knowledge," Regmi said. Some labels, like those for organic prod- ucts, are federally regulated by the National Organic Program, while other labels are not regulated. "USDA certified organic labeling has specific guidelines to it, while other labeling is not always verified, regulated or enforced in any way," said Casey Ritz, a professor of poultry science and poultry expert for UGA Cooperative Extension. "These labels are following the guidelines of a third-party independent program and may not have the same standards from one program to the next." Inside your egg As for egg connoisseurs who claim the ability to distinguish an organic (or pasture-raised or vegetarian-fed) egg from a-run-of-the-mill store brand egg, there are many ways to influence how an egg looks. "Generally speaking, a chicken puts out an egg based on what it eats. You may see a darker yolk color if a chicken is going out and eating certain grasses and worms that can enrich xanthophylls (pigment that changes yolk color) in eggs. If you feed chickens pigmented flowers or other pigmented products, they will also make eggs yolks appear dark yellow or orange," Regmi said. And what about the egg brands that boast increased vitamin content or Omega-3 fatty acids in their eggs? Yes, there are slight differences in the vitamin and fatty acid profiles of those eggs, but the difference is minimal. Labels such as organic, free-range, heritage or cage-free have no impact on egg nutrition. "Birds that are fed Omega-3 enriched diets may produce eggs with a small elevation in those fatty acid levels. Fat-soluble vitamins such as A and E can also be boosted a little bit in eggs from chickens that have exposure to greens and grasses or if the company adds increased levels of fat-soluble vitamins to their feed, but the increase within the egg is still small," Ritz explained. How birds are housed has no effect on the nutritional value of eggs. "If you look at birds raised with the same diets in different housing systems and compare the nutritional value of those eggs, it will be the same. Just compare the label on each carton and you will see the same nutrient profile. The husbandry system itself does not change the nutritional value of the egg," Ritz said. Conversely, for chickens who are raised and lay their eggs in outdoor or pastured systems, there may be a greater chance of contaminants on egg shells due to exposure to soil pathogens and microbes present in the natural environment. "Most of the eggs in the United States are washed and treated before they go to the grocery store, so there is less risk of getting contaminants in them in any way," Regmi said. Marketing and perception are important factors in influencing consumer choice, Ritz said. "What consumers think they want and what they are willing to pay for can be two different things," he said. "When faced with a price of $6 a dozen or $2 a dozen, it comes down to how much you are willing to pay for a dozen eggs." -Maria M.
