It was at the 2000 Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles. I was not a delegate, but a visitor to one of the suites overlooking the convention hall. Senator Kerry was also in the suite. I attempted to strike up a conversation with him by telling him I was from Sam Nunn's hometown of Perry, Georgia. Kerry had served with Nunn in the United States Senate for many years. Actually, his arrogant response was more like a non-conversation than a conversation. Guess he didn't like my Southern accent. I vividly remembered the encounter and repeated my recollection many times when Kerry was a Presidential candidate. Incidentally, I have said, often: "In politics, incompetence will defeat arrogance every time." Mickey Mantle. Janice and I were at the Polo Park over in Greene County, Georgia, several years ago. My all-time favorite major league baseball player, Mickey Mantle, was also there, and I had a thrilling opportunity to visit with him. Remember 1956 and Mantle's winning baseball's triple crown - .353 batting average, 52 HR, and 130 RBI. I said to him: "Champ, 1956 was really a good year for you, wasn't it? What I remember was how you could drag that bunt and move down to first base." Almost child-like, he responded: "Do you mean that you can really remember that?" Mantle was the exact opposite of Kerry. He had lots to be proud of, but was very humble. Herman Talmadge. We were quail hunting down on Mel Tolleson's place in South Houston County, when I asked Senator Talmadge: "Who was your favorite President that you served with?" This long-time Democratic Governor and Senator's response surprised me: "Eisenhower. The world was at peace. We had prosperity. And Eisenhower operated on the premise that `if it wasn't broke, don't fix it'." Pretty generous compliment from a Democrat about a Republican, I'd say. Edgar (Yellowlegs) Campbell. Billy Bledsoe, Hilt Gray, Seabie Hickson and I were fishing out of Cedar Keys, Florida, with this legendary guide when I asked: "Yellow, do you ever take people out who know absolutely nothing about fishing?" Yellow replied: "Yeah, y'all!" Jimmy Carter. I served my first two years (1973 and 1974) in the state legislature during Carter's last two years as Governor. During the closing days of the 1974 legislative session, I went into Governor Carter's office, and during the course of our conversation asked him: "What are you going to do when your term is up?" Carter replied: "Run for President." To which I foolishly responded: "Of what?" This is an absolutely true account! Aunt Lillian Maddox: I was visiting at Grandma and Papa's house in rural Washington County. I was probably about 10 years old. My Aunt Lillian (Daddy's sister) was also there. I got miffed about something and threatened to run away. Aunt Lillian's response: "Good. Go on." I did run away - down the dirt road and for about 30 minutes. When I returned, Aunt Lillian was waiting for me and greeted me with: "I thought you said you were running away." And that was the end of that! God bless Aunt Lillian. I loved her. I think of her often. George Steinbrenner. I was at the White House in the Presidential receiving line. George Steinbrenner and a friend of his were behind me. I had a brief, pleasant conversation with Mr. Steinbrenner. As I turned away, I heard Mr. Steinbrenner say to his friend: "I like those boys from the South, they still say, `yes sir' and `no sir'. Yes sir, Mr. Steinbrenner, that's right. Billy Bledsoe. Number one: "Larry, you're all right, the world's all wrong!" Number two: Every time Billy and I fish together and I catch a fish, "There must be a million of `em out there!" Like Aunt Lillian, I loved `ole Billy. Muhammad Ali. I was with him at least four times, but all after Parkinson's disease had started taking its toll. Still, every time I saw him, his eyes sparkled, and he had a wide and inviting smile, as he took a boxer's stance as if he were ready to spar with me. These were the best non-conversation conversations I ever had. Denmark Groover, Jr. Denny and I were talking about a fellow House member who had made a fiery speech criticizing one of our other colleagues. I said to Denny, "Well, at least he later went to him and apologized." Denny responded, "Larry, a private apology for a public wrong is no apology at all." Amen, Brother Denny. I've got lots more, but I'm out of space. Maybe sometime in the future. So if we're talking, be careful, because I'm listening and remembering, and I might put it in the Market Bulletin. Peanut Research: Total acreage in peanuts is down about two percent this year Continued From Page 1 but I always go to the extension and get what I need, and I've tried really hard to pay attention to what they are doing because they just don't talk about it, like `if you do this practice, you can expect this.' They put it in terms of our survival," Chase said. Chase touted Peanut Rx as among to best tools for growers that has come from research. Peanut Rx is a peanut disease risk index developed by researchers and extension specialists at the University of Georgia, the University of Florida, and Auburn University. Updated annually, Peanut Rx allows growers to assess their crop risk to diseases like tomato spotted wilt, leaf spot diseases and white mold. Chase said he worked with Robert Kemerait from the UGA Tifton Campus a few years ago to adjust his fungicide program using Peanut Rx, which provided positive results for that crop. He said those results could not have happened without years of trial and error in the research plots. Research in a specific area may take years or not at all. Chase said one measure for peanut research and best practices could be found in production. Georgia peanut growers had increased production per acre from 3,500 pounds six years ago to 4,100 pounds in 2020. Georgia's peanut acreage this year was expected to drop from 810,000 planted in 2020 acres to about 790,000 acres, according to the USDA Prospective Plantings Report. The drop, two percent off from a 29year high in acreage planted, was necessary for crop rotations, said Georgia Peanut Commission Executive Director Don Koehler. The University of Georgia has nine agricultural research stations across the state, including the university's Tifton campus, Griffin Experiment Station and Southeast Georgia Research and Education Center in Midville. Scott Monfort said the 650-acre Darrell Williams Research Farm at the Sunbelt Agricultural Expo grounds offers unique opportunities for his peanut research. "I do small plot research, but also the large block of research, and that's where we start to see the variability in a lot of these big fields where we really do large, large plots. The expo is one of those testing sites that they give me plenty of room," Monfort said Monfort explained he does 15 acres of research involving six trials. The plots are 400 feet long, compared to 30 feet long at small plots, which provides replications and variability for testing. "It really helps us bridge the gap from small plot research to what we're recommending for the growers," Monfort said. For more information on peanut research, go to https://peanuts.caes. uga.edu/ The Georgia Peanut Commission offers information on funding research, education resources and recipes at www.gapeanuts.com. A peanut grower digs up his peanuts to dry out and harvest. This year, wetter weather has slowed work in the fields, but researchers with the University of Georgia have used the wet conditions to test how inputs like foliar fertilizers can help peanuts in stressed conditions. Since the vaccine rollout, over five million Georgians have been fully vac- cinated against COVID-19, turning the tide on the pandemic. When the vac- cine first became available, there was so much information circulating in our communities that it was hard to know what was true and who to trust. Med- ical decisions are personal, so here is factual and concise information about the COVID-19 vaccines so you can Sally Jones gain confidence in your decision to protect yourself, your family, and your community. Here are some of the most common questions about the COVID-19 vaccine explained: The vaccine was created so quickly, is it safe and will the vaccine give me COVID-19? Research on mRNA vaccines has been going on for more than two decades. When the pandemic hit, scientists were able to make the vaccine so quickly because they already had the technology. None of the COVID vaccines contain whole live virus, so you cannot get COVID from the vaccine. The mRNA in the vaccine teaches your body how to recognize and fight COVID if it comes along, but the vaccine does not contain the virus itself. How do the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines really work? Pfizer and Moderna are mRNA vaccines. The mRNA in the vaccine acts as a messenger and tells your cells to make a protein resembling the coronavirus, so that your body's immune system can quickly recognize and fight the coronavirus when you are exposed. What is in the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines? The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines contain mRNA and other normal vaccine ingredients (fats that protect the mRNA, salts, and sugar). No metal, microchips, or harmful substances are in the vaccine. Is the vaccine going to change my DNA? No. The mRNA in the vaccine does enter cells, but it can't go inside the nucleus of the cell where your DNA lives. The mRNA teaches your cell to make a protein to activate your immune system and then the mRNA quickly breaks down. Do I need the vaccine if I've already had COVID-19? Yes. Immunity against this virus is short-lived (months, not years) and the virus is changing all the time. Studies have shown that the combination of vaccination and natural infection provides the best protection against this continually changing virus. Can the vaccine affect my ability to have children? No. This was a false report circulating on social media. During the Pfizer vaccine tests, 23 women volunteers involved in the study became pregnant, and the only one who suffered a pregnancy loss had not received the actual vaccine, but a placebo. (Source: hopkinsmedicine.org) Do I still need to wear a mask if I get the vaccine? The CDC recommends that getting vaccinated and wearing a mask is the best protection for yourself, your family, and your friends. Should my children get the vaccine? Yes. CDC and FDA now recommend children ages 5 and older get the Pfizer vaccine. Children ages 5 through 11 years receive one-third of the adult dose of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. For the most recent updates, be sure to check the CDC website or speak with your child's healthcare provider. While the pandemic seems to linger on and everyone has been affected by this virus in many ways, it has been encouraging to see communities come together in a time of need. However, there is still work to be done as only 48 percent of Georgians have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Vaccination has been proven to be the best protection against the serious consequences of this virus. Visit vaccine.gov to find a vaccine site near you. FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN 404-656-3722 agr.georgia.gov WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2021 `Quarantine quilts' are quirky, poignant products of the COVID-19 pandemic pause By Amy Carter amy.carter@agr.georgia.gov CARROLLTON Nearly 60 percent of Americans picked up a new hobby during the social and economic pauses that marked early efforts to contain the coronavirus, according to a survey conducted in early 2021 by Lending Tree/Qualtrics. While reading and baking/cooking led the pack among hobbyists, arts and crafts and knitting or sewing made a respectable showing. The Southeastern Quilt and Textile Museum is exhibiting the work of quilters in Georgia and beyond who used their time in quarantine to take up the hobby or finish projects that had long been in the works. "Covid Coil," by Candice Murray of Dalton, symbolizes the cycle of despair and fear that circled around a small germ, the coronavirus. Making It Through is the name of the exhibit that will be on display through Dec. 18. The challenge to quilters featured in the show was to use only materials they had on hand when making their "quarantine quilts." Dr. Bruce Bobick of Carrollton composed The Homeplate Quilt using his own ties from the 1960s and those of his father from the 1940s. He made the quilt as a gift for his college-bound grandson. "This is an original design of mine and it is the first time I have pieced a quilt," Bobick, who is in his 70s, wrote in the show notes. To Fred, Love Marilyn is the product of a long-running joke between Jeanette Bernhardt of Carrollton and her husband. "When I purchased this panel, I teased my husband, Fred, that I would make him a quilt so that he could finally sleep with Marilyn Monroe. I purchased the fabric several years ago and finally got it finished during the pandemic quarantine," Bernhardt wrote in the show notes. "I'm Rich," a quilt by Brandon Wulff of Toronto, Canada, pays homage to the value of toilet paper early in the pandemic. certainty of the pandemic in ways both sober and uplifting. Joyce McArthur of Carrollton started quilting in late 2017 after retiring from a career as a kitchen designer. "I really hadn't planned to make quilting a hobby," McArthur said via email. "I just wanted to make one `crazy quilt' to make use of my lifelong sewing and embroidery skills. Well, it's four years later and I've made about 50 quilts of all sizes and patterns." For Making It Through, McArthur decided to go the uplifting route. "My title, The Sun Rose Anyway, reflects my feelings about the sense of unrest we all felt in the early days of the COVID pandemic. In spite of our not knowing what each day would bring, the sun rose each morning, just as it always had. There's comfort in knowing that the natural world around us continues to do its thing each and every day." McArthur's quilt, which was selected for the exhibit's marketing materials, incorporates batiks in the foreground and background. The sun is made of bright colors and prints in a pattern known as a "New York Beauty" block. "It uses a paper piecing technique I'd been wanting to try, and I knew it would be a challenge. It ended up being more fun while also challenging," McArthur said. The Southeastern Quilt and Textile Museum is located at 306 Bradley St., Suite C, in Carrollton. The museum is open by appointment on Wednesdays; from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays; and from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturdays. Situated in the heart of Carrollton's historic downtown, the museum is within walking distance of numerous restaurants and shops. Quilting ad in the Market Bulletin leads to 30-year pen pal friendship The make-do attitude on display in the Southeastern Quilt and Textile Museum's ongoing Making It Through exhibit is a theme common among quilters through time. In fact, patchwork or pieced quilts like those on exhibit at the museum now pull from the maker's available fabric stock including cherished clothing and scraps from other projects. A recent exhibit featuring the work of Carrollton quilter Nellie Adams, 96, took that idea one step further. In the early 1950s, Adams responded to a Classified ad placed in the Market Bulletin by two quilters in North Georgia seeking a "fabric pen pal" with access to a greater variety of fabric than they could buy in their "holler" in the mountains. "They sent her a list (of fabric they needed) and she went and bought it," said JoAnna Browning, director of operations for the museum. In exchange they sent Adams green and brown fabric that she stitched into a pattern called "Dresden Plate." "Maybe this wasn't necessarily her style but it's what they could pick out in the mountains of North Georgia and she used it. When you and I pick out art supplies, fabrics, we choose favorite colors and textures," Browning said. "I guess it was just that generation. She was gonna use what she had and she used up every bit of fabric those ladies sent her." The three conducted a 30-year correspondence built on the exchange of fabric and a shared love of quilting, swapping stories about their families and their communities. According to Browning's discussions with Adams' family, there was talk at one point of the ladies meeting in person. "After writing back and forth for 30 years there was some talk about her going up there, but she said at that point she wasn't sure if she should say, `Hey, I'm a Black lady from Carrollton.' It was awkward after all those years of writing to each other to even ask about race, so she never went," Browning said. "She said she'd continue to write if they wanted to, and her son thinks they just aged to the point where they couldn't write anymore." -Amy Carter With "Frustration," Cindy Kaiser of Belton, S.C., stitched out her feelings of angst over the pandemic. Swearing only helped momentarily, she said. A former cotton warehouse in Carrollton's historic downtown won out as the site of the quilt museum nine years ago when the Georgia Quilt Council was seeking a central location for the facility. The museum hosts exhibits of local, regional, and national works borrowed from homegrown quilters and other museums, said JoAnna Browning, director of operations. Several quilts in the current exhibit reference the un- "To Fred, Love Marilyn," by Jeanette Bernhardt of Carrollton, is the culmination of a long-standing joke with her husband, Fred, who can finally sleep with Marilyn Monroe. In addition to quilts pieced from fabric shared by a pair of pen pals she met through the Market Bulletin, Nellie Adams and her best friend stitched this polyester quilt (bottom) from choir robes and costumes worn by church members through the years.
