The facility is dedicated to packing fresh sweet corn grown in Georgia and Florida for distribution to retail grocery chains throughout the region. Company President Jim Caruso said the company invested about $2 million in an existing building on the Atlanta Market and started tray-packing sweet corn about a month ago. "We plan on expanding from tray-packed corn to oth- er items," he said. "We want to focus on Georgia Grown items, but there will be other items. This is a great op- portunity." State Rep. Sandra Scott, D-Rex, who represents por- tions of Henry and Clayton counties in the Georgia Gen- eral Assembly, said the new Caruso facility could have a Amy Carter/GDA major impact on her constituency. Caruso Foods President Jim Caruso and his son, Nicholas, sample grilled sweet "It will bring jobs here to Forest Park in which people corn prepared by Georgia Grown Chief Executive Chef Holly Chute. can really walk to; so one of the things that we're hopeful for is that they hire a lot of residents that live right here in the Forest Park community," she said. "It's all about economic development and putting our people to work and this a great opportunity for them." The facility's economic impact will not be limited just to urban areas within the immediate vicinity, said Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black. The rural communities where the corn and other produce is grown will reap the benefits as well. Caruso said his company currently employs about 50 people processing one million ears of corn a week at the Atlanta Market. A second shift will bring that total to about 100, he said. The second shift will operate primarily in the summer, but with sweet corn growing in Georgia and Florida 38 weeks of the year and plans to add other produce, the facility will be in operation year-round, he said. Caruso South also has a logistics arm that will bring new drivers, trucks and businesses to the area. The logistics side specializes in direct store delivery to major retail chains spanning from Ohio to every state east of the Mississippi. Caruso is an 86-year-old company operated by four generations of the same family. Georgia Grown Baby Barn nears due date Parrish Construction has opened up one side of the Georgia Grown Building at the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter in Perry to accommodate an expansion of the building. The expansion will house the Georgia Grown Baby Barn. The live birthing center is expected to open its doors to fairgoers during the 2018 Georgia National Fair Oct. 4-14. The center will promote familiarity with Georgia's animal industry by showcasing live births of animals, an event that some fairgoers might never witness otherwise. Erin Burnett/GDA USDA launches pilot program for veterans Partnership with Texas A&M will help satisfy farm experience eligibility for loans By Amy Carter amy.carter@agr.georgia.gov The U.S. Department of Agriculture is partnering with Texas A&M's AgriLife Extension Service to conduct a national test of a farm training program for military veterans. On May 31, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue announced the launch of a pilot program with Texas A&M's Battleground to Breaking Ground initiative, which helps veterans obtain the experience necessary to qualify for federal farm-ownership loans from the Farm Services Administration. "Veterans retiring from active duty face many challenges, and this effort provides them with hands-on training and financial planning to help them succeed as new farmers and ranchers," said Perdue, who is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Texas A&M started Battleground to Breaking Ground in 2011. The local program serves about 25 applicants per training period through mentorship with established farmers, hands-on training and online courses. The pilot program, designed for 15 to 18 veterans, will roll out in three phases: an introductory workshop, a business planning curriculum, and a production curriculum over a period of 12 to 18 months. According to the USDA, Congress authorized the pilot program to support farm training for veterans, including a program to help with loan qualifications. Texas A&M's record of success with Battleground to Breaking Ground led the FSA to partner with them for the pilot project. At the end of their training, participants will be able to combine the certificate they receive with their military leadership or management experience to satisfy a federal farm experience requirement that currently prevents many from obtaining FSA farm-ownership loans. Typically, applicants must participate in the business operations of a farm for at least three years during a 10-year period to qualify for a FSA loan. Jon Jackson, a former U.S. Army Ranger, founded Comfort Farms in Milledgeville to help fellow veterans suffering from war injuries and PTSD successfully transition back to civilian life through farming. He said the USDA partnership is a step in the right direction toward meeting that goal nationwide. "We are finding that many veterans coming out of the service are wanting to gravitate toward farming," Jackson said. "The reality of the matter is that there are so many obstacles in the way, it inhibits the growth of veterans' careers in farming. By scaling back on some of the requirements and leveraging that with the veterans' skill level to See USDA PILOT PROGRAM, page 6 Mail to: Published by the Ga. Department of Agriculture Gary W. Now that summer is here, it's a good idea to review some important safety information and tips to remember as we head into a hot, hot summer. Did you know that the sun emits radiation in the form of ultraviolet (UV) rays? Did you also know that prolonged exposure to these rays on a nice, sunny day can lead to early skin aging with wrinkles and age-spots, and even skin cancer? In fact, even on a cloudy day you can receive enough sun exposure to cause skin damage. Sun exposure is responsible for the vast majority of skin cancer. And proper protection can help maintain healthy skin and prevent skin cancer Dr. Steven Kent development. Unprotected skin (without sunscreen or acceptable clothing) can be damaged in as little as 15 minutes but can take up to 12 hours to show the effects. We are talking about suntan or sunburn. Any change in skin color from time in the sun (tanning and burning) represents skin damage from the harmful UV rays of the sun. Because it takes little time for the sun to cause skin damage, it's important to protect your skin during everyday activities bike rides, hiking, outdoor sports not just at the beach. There are a lot of ways to protect yourself from the harmful effects of the sun this summer. First is proper clothing. We should all be wearing a wide-brimmed hat to protect the scalp, face, ears and neck. Breathable long-sleeved shirts, pants and skirts offer the best protection. If wearing this clothing is not practical, consider at least a T-shirt if at the beach or by the pool. Clothing is just as important as sunscreen. Sunglasses are a must for proper sun protection, not just for looks. Try to find a pair that covers your entire eye and blocks 90-100 percent of the sun's rays (UVA and UVB). Apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes before going outside. Generally, 1.5 total ounces, or one shot-glass full of sunscreen, is recommended for adequate protection of the entire body. And remember, sunscreen wears off with sweat and after cooling down in a swimming pool. Reapplication is just as important as the initial application. You can reapply sunscreen every two hours for proper protection. What is SPF? Which SPF is best? Who should wear sunscreen? What sunscreen should be used? These are all great questions. SPF stands for "Sun Protection Factor" and it measures the sunscreen's ability to block harmful rays from the sun. The sunscreen aisle at the drugstore offers a lot of choices. In general, it is best to choose sunscreen with SPF no less than 15. Anyone over the age of 6 months should wear sunscreen. Children under the age of 6 months should not be exposed to the sun. Broad spectrum sunscreen is recommended. Broad spectrum is a fancy term for protecting against both UVA and UVB radiation from the sun. Also remember to seek shade, especially between the hours of 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. These are referred to as the peak sun hours, and you are most susceptible to the harmful effects of the sun during this time. I travel the state of Georgia promoting Georgia's No. 1 industry, agriculture! Would you bee-lieve that some of the most important farm workers aren't even human? I'm talking about bees, of course! Farmers call on beekeepers to provide these little workers to help pollinate their crops. Bees increase farm production in the U.S. by nearly $9 billion. Bees collect the nectar from flowering plants to produce honey. While a worker bee is collecting nectar, pollen sticks to its body and falls off inside the next flower it visits. It takes at least one colony of bees to pollinate an acre of apples, blueberries, cucumbers or watermelons. More than 2,000 bees live and work in each colony. These colonies contain mostly worker bees, with one mature queen and several drones. The worker bees collect the nectar, take care of the young bees, protect the hive and produce the honey. I stopped at Fly By Bee Yard near Gordon to see bees and honey production up close. Noah and Jonah gave me the grand tour. They smoked the hives to calm the bees while their parents, Brandon and Niki, collected the honey. That's a sweet job! There's still time to be counted: Respond to the 2017 Census of Agriculture online through July Athens The U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service is wrapping up data collection for the 2017 Census of Agriculture. Farmers and ranchers who did not respond by mail before June 15 still have until the end of July to complete the Census online through the secure website found on the cover of their Census form. Phone follow-up and personal interviews will also continue through July. "The Census of Agriculture provides the only source of comprehensive agricultural data for every state and county in the nation," said USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue. "These data are used to make important local, state, and national decisions that will have a very real impact on farmers, ranchers, agricultural operations, and rural communities. I encourage producers to respond online or to send in their paper form today." NASS Southern Regional Director Jim Ewing reminds farmers and ranchers that the questionnaire needs to be completed by everyone who received a form, including landowners who lease land to producers, those involved in conservation programs, even those who may have received the Census and do not farm. Every response matters. "Our mission at NASS is to provide data in service to U.S. agriculture," said NASS Administrator Hubert Hamer. "We extended the original Census deadline because many producers weren't counted and if they aren't represented in these critical data, they risk being underserved in farm programs, disaster assistance, agricultural research, education, local policies, and business; this is why it is imperative that we hear from everyone." Federal law, Title 7 USC 2204(g) Public Law 105-113, requires NASS to keep all information confidential, to use the data only for statistical purposes, and to only publish in aggregate form to prevent disclosing the identity of any individual producer or farm operation. For more information about the 2017 Census of Agriculture or to respond online, visit www.agcensus.usda. gov. Improved in 2017, the online form is faster and more convenient than ever. For questions about or assistance with filling out the Census, call toll-free 888.424.7828. Lee Lancaster/GDA USDA Pilot Program Continued From Page 1 meet those requirements is an extremely smart move on behalf of this USDA pilot. Couple that with training and mentorship, and it creates a pathway to success." The next step will be the development of a marketing network, Jackson said. "Veterans, like all farmers, still need access to processing centers, commercial kitchens, transportation and distribution for future products so that the products can move from farm to fork," he said. The USDA will be accepting applications for the Battleground to Breaking Ground pilot program until 11 p.m. CST on July 20. UGA organizes interdisciplinary research team to study whiteflies By Clint Thompson Silverleaf whiteflies devastated Georgia's cotton and fall vegetable crops last year. In response to this crisis, a team of University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences research and UGA Cooperative Extension specialists is studying the pest statewide to help cotton and vegetable farmers avoid another year of disappointing crops. "Teams are an important part of UGA. Many of the issues agriculturists face today require a collection of scientists from differing disciplines with differing expertise to address complex issues. The silverleaf whitefly fits the bill here," said Phillip Roberts, UGA Extension cotton and soybean entomologist and Whitefly Team member. "Not only are whiteflies a direct pest of plants as a result of feeding, but they also transmit several viruses to vegetables that can have a devastating effect on virus-susceptible crops." UGA Extension established the UGA Whitefly Team, and each team member brings a specific area of whitefly expertise. In addition to Roberts, the team includes: Jason Schmidt, entomologist specializing in biocontrol Mark Abney, peanut research entomologist Mike Toews, cotton and soybean research entomologist Stormy Sparks, UGA Extension vegetable entomologist Rajagopalbabu Srinivasan, vector biologist Bhabesh Dutta, UGA Extension vegetable pathologist David Riley, vegetable research entomologist Tim Coolong, UGA Extension vegetable specialist Sudeep Bag, crop virologist Apurba Barman, postdoctoral candidate The mild winter of 2016-17 enabled whiteflies to continue to feed on plant hosts and become a major nuisance for cotton growers in the early summer of 2017. Fortunately for Georgia farmers, whitefly populations are considerably down when compared to this time last year. A colder winter, including several hard freezes in January, eliminated the reproductive host plants, like cultivated crops and weeds, on which whiteflies feed. "We're not seeing any significant outbreaks of viruses yet. It was probably June or July when we saw that last year, right at the end of the spring crop," Sparks said. "Last year, we had growers who were treating whiteflies in the middle of winter on some of their winter crops. On the spring crops, they were being treated by mid-May. Right now, it's nothing like we experienced last year." Whiteflies migrate from winter vegetables to spring vegetables to agronomic crops, like cotton, to fall vegetables and back to winter vegetables, according to Roberts. If producers don't adequately scout for these insects, they could face a whitefly epidemic. "Failure to properly manage whiteflies in any one of these systems could have negative consequences on remaining cropping systems," Roberts said. "Early detection of whiteflies in any cropping system is critical for successful management, as appropriate insecticides must be applied before the population builds to damaging levels." Whiteflies cause feeding injury issues in vegetables and transmit two new viruses: cucurbit leaf crumple virus and cucurbit yellow stunting disorder virus. Vegetables like squash, zucchini, cucumber, cantaloupe and snap beans are highly susceptible to these viruses. Commercial cultivars that have resistance or tolerance to these pathogens are not available. According to the UGA crop loss estimates, these viruses caused between 30 and 50 percent of squash and cucumber UGA CAES Photo Whiteflies cause feeding injury issues in vegetables and transmit two new viruses: cucurbit leaf crumple virus and cucurbit yellow stunting disorder virus. Commercial cultivars that have resistance or tolerance to these pathogens are not available. crop loss and nearly 80 percent of snap bean crop loss in fall 2017. Dutta and Coolong screen different cultivars and germplasms, and they advance breeding lines of squash, snap beans and zucchini for cucurbit leaf crumple virus resistance. They hope to find resistance lines for the viruses that whiteflies transmit. Barman, a postdoctoral researcher under Toews, set yellow sticky traps at 125 field sites across southern Georgia to detect whiteflies. Each week, Barman and his colleagues drive more than 800 miles to collect and replace traps in 24 different counties. The traps are located as far west as the Georgia-Alabama border; as far east as Vidalia; as far north as Cordele; and as far south as Thomasville. "I hope that our traps will be able to detect when there is a whitefly population buildup or migration in one of those specific locations. Following that lead, we should be able to target the crop or host plants responsible for such population buildup around the trap. Simultaneously, we could communicate with the county Extension agents and consultants to manage that whitefly population locally," Barman said. He will also provide weekly updates on whitefly numbers through an interactive, online map, which will allow the UGA Whitefly Team to monitor any whitefly hot spots throughout the growing season. Scouting and timely insecticide applications remain the best course of action against whiteflies. However, UGA experts encourage growers to conserve beneficial insects and only apply insecticides when whitefly infestations are found. Destroying whitefly host crops after harvest will also eliminate further reproduction. "We need to watch for them in the next three months. For the most part, in Tift and Colquitt counties, it's not a matter of if they're going to show up, but when," Sparks said. For more information about whiteflies, contact your local UGA Extension office at 800.275.8421. -Clint Thompson is a news editor with the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences based in Tifton. Cook Georgia Grown: Sour Cream Cornbread Editor's Note: We've heard from several readers recently who discovered their go-to recipe for cornbread in the pages of the Market Bulletin years ago and came back to us for a reprint after misplacing it.
