BLACK, COMMISSIONER WEDNESDAY, MARCH 15, 2017 VOL. 100, NO. 6 COPYRIGHT 2017 GEOR GIA DE PAR T M E NT O F AGR I CU LT U R E GA RY W. BLAC K, COMMISS ION ER Avian Influenza is confirmed in Tennessee: Georgia Department of Agriculture stresses the importance of commercial and residential biosecurity The Georgia Department of Agriculture is urging commercial poultry producers and backyard poultry flock keepers to be diligent in the practice of biosecurity measures following the discovery of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in a commercial breeder flock in Lincoln County, Tenn. Although Lincoln County is located in Southern Tennessee close to Georgia, there have been no reports of Avian Influenza in Georgia. The Georgia Department of Agriculture remains vigilant in its surveillance efforts and is working with growers to continue their biosecurity measures. "In light of the first confirmed case of HPAI in commercial poultry this year, we challenge all of our poultry producers to redouble their biosecurity efforts," said Dr. Robert Cobb, Georgia State Veterinarian. "We urge our backyard growers to practice extreme caution during this period of heightened alert and consider moving poultry with outside access into bio-secure housing immediately." HPAI is deadly to domesticated poultry chickens, turkey, guineas, quail and peafowl. HPAI does not pose a risk to the food supply. The risk of human infection with avian influenza during poultry outbreaks is very low. "We are certainly concerned for our neighbors in Tennessee and will keep them in our thoughts and prayers as they deal with this economic hit," said Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black. "Poultry is Georgia's number one industry and we must take this threat seriously. Wild waterfowl can harbor the Avian Influenza virus without getting sick. We cannot keep the waterfowl from coming to Georgia, but we can keep them and this virus from getting into our domestic poultry by practicing strong biosecurity." Owners of commercial and backyard poultry flocks are encouraged to closely observe their birds and report a sudden increase in the number of sick birds or bird deaths to the state veterinarian's office at 855.491.1432. For more updates and information regarding biosecurity tips, visit www.ga-ai.org or www.allinallgone.com. Consistent biosecurity practices are the best way to prevent diseases such as Avian Influenza. The following steps can help keep birds healthy: Keep your distance. Isolate your birds from visitors and other birds. Keep it clean. Prevent germs from spreading by cleaning shoes, tools and equipment. Don't haul disease home. Clean vehicles and cages. Don't borrow disease from your neighbor. Avoid sharing tools and equipment with others. Know the warning signs of infectious bird diseases. Watch for early signs to prevent the spread of disease. Report sick birds. Report unusual signs of disease or unexpected deaths. Source: www.aphis.usda.gov Expect Vidalia Onions in stores after April 12 The sweet taste of Vidalia onions will be available a little earlier this year. The Georgia Department of Agriculture has set Wednesday, April 12, as the official pack date for Vidalia onions. The early April date was recommended to Commissioner Gary W. Black during a recent grower meeting in the 20-county Vidalia onion growing region. "At this time the 2017 crop is in excellent condition and considerably ahead of schedule thanks to good weather," Black said. Maturity dates for Vidalia onions vary with the weather. Georgia's mild winter helped the crop to maturity earlier this year. "A colder winter pushes them back later," said Cliff Riner, area onion agent and coordinator of the University of Georgia's Vidalia Onion and Vegetable Research Center in Toombs County. Brett McLain, chair of the Vidalia Onion Advisory Panel, said the early date will ensure the highest quality of onions are delivered to retail stores across the country for purchase by consumers. "The 2017 Vidalia onion crop is ahead of schedule because of the mild temperatures this winter and we have reacted to that with an earlier pack date," said McLain, who grows Vidalia onions on his family farm in Lyons. "We put out the best quality crop to date last year as an industry and we are looking forward to doing that again." Vidalia onions cannot be packed or sold prior to April See VIDALIA ONIONS, page 7 Learn how Vidalia onions get their unique flavor on Page 12. Mail to: Published by the Ga. Department of Agriculture Gary W. Black, Commissioner Finalists selected for UGA's Flavor of Georgia contest By Merritt Melancon ATHENS - Judges have selected 33 products to compete in the final round of the University of Georgia's 2017 Flavor of Georgia Food Product Contest in Atlanta on March 21. The contest is the state's premier testing ground for both small, upstart food companies and time-tested products. This year's finalists represent all corners of the state and the best of Georgia's diverse culinary heritage. The 33 finalists, who have passed the first round of judging, were selected from a field of 117 products in 11 categories. Finalists will bring their products to the final round of judging in conjunction with the Georgia Department of Agriculture's Agriculture Awareness Week celebration March 20-24. Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Gary W. Black has designated March 21 Flavor of Georgia Day. "Georgia is home to some of the best and most creative minds in the food business, and each year the Flavor of Georgia contest helps to showcase that talent," said Sharon P. Kane, contest coordinator and economist with the UGA Center for Agribusiness and Economic Development in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. A food business development specialist, Kane and her center colleagues have organized the annual contest since 2007. By Arty Schronce I grew up prejudiced against roses. I have vague childhood memories of hearing "too much trouble" when the subject came up. And there was the stereotype of obsessive and snobbish rose gardeners looking down their noses at other people who didn't worship at the altar of the hybrid tea. They even had a special name for themselves: rosarians. A prejudice even a horticultural one is a burden. I stopped toting mine around decades ago. I am happy to say that my heart and my garden are open to roses and rose growers, whatever they call themselves. If you have been wearing antirose-colored glasses, now is a good time to take them off and check out what is available. If you are concerned about pesticides and the need for lots of fertilizer (the main reasons I hear for not planting roses), I have never used pesticides on any rose I have grown. Nor do I fertilize them. While my methods may mean that some will not work for me or produce as many blooms as they do for someone else, I am happy with the results. Here are a few tips if you have avoided roses due to pesticide concerns or being tied to a demanding fertilizer regimen: First, plant them in the right spot. Roses require at least six hours of sunlight each day. If they don't get enough, they are more likely to be attacked by fungal diseases such as black spot and powdery mildew. It is beneficial that roses get sun as early in the day as possible. Morning sun will dry dew from the foliage and reduce fungal leaf diseases. Plant them in an area that gets good air circulation for the same reason. Second, proper soil preparation will improve the health and long-term vigor of your roses. Adding organic matter such as compost will increase the waterholding capacity of sandy soil and break up clay soil. Properly prepared soil will help them take up water and nutrients more efficiently. Third, select durable and disease-resistant varieties. The Knock Out series has been getting good reviews. Rugosa rose varieties are usually disease resistant. The chestnut rose is an ironclad performer. A few other durable choices are Aloha, Mermaid, Caldwell Pink, Archduke Charles, Ccile Brnner, Charlotte Armstrong, Dainty Bess, Fortuniana, La Marne, Gardenia, Mutabalis (butterfly rose), Old Blush, Seven Sisters, The Fairy, Zephirine Drouhin and Petite Pink. A horticulturist at your local nursery will be able to give more suggestions. Fourth, don't freak out and start spraying if you see a splotchy leaf or a Japanese beetle. Create a garden that looks good as a whole and you won't focus on one or two imperfections. Every rose doesn't have to look like the centerfold in the Jackson & Perkins catalog all the time. Also, don't keep your roses pumped up with fertilizer. Lush growth is more prone to attacks from diseases and insects. Many roses produce an adequate supply of flowers with no fertilizer. -Arty Schronce is the department's resident gardening expert. Write to him at arty.schronce@agr. georgia.gov or in care of the Market Bulletin. Petite Pink could be considered a groundcover rose, but it can be grown to cover a fence. Its leaves and flowers are refined and petite. Its flowers are similar in color and shape to Dorothy Perkins, a thornier rose with thicker stems, larger leaves and a more sprawling habit that is common along Georgia roadsides and at old home sites. Zepherine Drouhin is a fragrant and nearly thornless climber that was introduced in 1868. Flavor of Georgia: Contest is a launching pad to wider markets Continued From Page 1 "The legacy of excellence and camaraderie that our Flavor of Georgia finalists and winners have achieved continues to be remarkable," she said. "It is a competition but it's also a family. Over the years, contestants have built collaborations and networks that continue to support and enhance food entrepreneurship in Georgia from the coast to the mountains. It's not just great food, it's economic development." Judges for the final round of the contest will include food brokers, grocery buyers and other food industry experts. Entries are evaluated based on the state theme, commercial appeal, taste, innovation and market potential in each category. Contestants will provide samples to judges and pitch their products in a "Shark Tank" style presentation. This year's finalists are listed below by product name, company and city. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 15, 2017 FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN 404-656-3722 agr.georgia.gov PAGE 7 Pairing farmers and schools: Third annual Georgia Grown Farm to Table Source Show draws largest crowd yet More than 70 school systems and 50 Georgia Grown food product vendors met at the Atlanta Farmers Market in Forest Park Feb. 23 for the third annual Georgia Grown Farm to Table Source Show. The show pairs Georgia growers and food producers with school nutritionists seeking to introduce more Georgia-grown produce and value-added food products to cafeteria menus. Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black said schools are proving grounds for the Georgia Grown brand. "You serve more impressionable minds than anyone else in Georgia," he said. "Why is it important for a kindergartner to be able to recognize that brand? So that when they're with their parents at Kroger and they see that brand they buy it." With that kind of buy-in, Georgia's will be the most recognizable state agriculture brand in America, Black said. The department of agriculture, the Georgia Department of Education and the Georgia Department of Public Health are working toward a goal of having 20 percent of every meal served every day in Georgia public schools made up of Georgia-grown products by the start of the 2020 school year. The source show is just one way the departments have partnered to help local public school systems statewide meet that goal. Lauren Koff, right, school nutrition dietician for Houston County schools, won a seat on the bus for the first-ever school nutrition farm tour to be sponsored by Georgia Grown in June. At left is Jack Spruill, director of marketing for the Georgia Department of Agriculture. At center is Misty Friedman, coordinator of the department's Feed My School program. Vidalia Onions Continued From Page 1 12 as established by the rules of the Georgia Department of Agriculture. The Georgia state legislature in 1986 entrusted the department with the ownership of the Vidalia onion certification mark, delegating the commissioner to protect the integrity of the mark and ensure consumers receive only the highest quality sweet Vidalia onions. The Vidalia onion was developed in the 1930s. In 1990 the Vidalia became the official state vegetable of Georgia. Vidalia onions are unique to Georgia and may only be grown in parts of a 20-county area in the southeastern part of the state. "Most Vidalias are grown in a sandy loam soil. This soil helps provide for a sweeter onion, and helps give them the tan color consumers are looking for," Riner said. The onions are prized for their sweetness and mild flavor and can be used raw or cooked. According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Georgia farmers harvested 268 million pounds of Vidalia onions from 11,200 acres in 2015. Value of production for last year's crop exceeded $120 million. PAGE 12 FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN 404-656-3722 agr.georgia.gov WEDNESDAY, MARCH 15, 2017 Would an onion by any other name taste as sweet as a Vidalia? UGA researchers are working to answer that question By Arty Schronce At the University of Georgia Crop and Environmental Laboratory in Athens, lab manager Daniel Jackson and his staff are getting to the root of why onions taste the way they do. The data coming out of the lab is important to Georgia's multimillion-dollar Vidalia onion industry and will impact not only the farmers who produce this unique Georgia crop, but also fertilizer manufacturers and onion breeders. To listen to Jackson explain it, biting into an onion does not just produce a burst of flavor that is sweet, hot or pungent; it is the trigger for a series of chemical reactions releasing pyruvic acid, lachrymatory factor and methyl-thiosulfinates, as well as various sugars. These reactions make an onion taste like an onion. In the past, researchers focused on the sugar content. It was assumed the more sugar the onion contained, the sweeter it tasted. It turns out the story is more complex with some compounds masking the sugars. For example, lachrymatory factor is responsible for the upfront heat and pungency that can turn a hardened onion eater teary-eyed, and methyl-thiosulfinates are responsible for oniony aftertaste and onion breath. High levels of these and pyruvic acid mean a hot, pungent onion, while low levels mean a sweet, mild onion. In the laboratory Daniel Jackson has to perform delicate and exacting tasks such as pipetting a sample for analytical reading in the lab's spectrophotometer, but in the field he has to perform more physically demanding work such as hauling bags of onions and pushing a soil core sampler several feet into a field to get a soil sample for analysis. useful unless you can do something to modify one to match the other. Fortunately, there is something to be done. The lach- rymatory factor, methyl-thiosulfinates and pyruvic acid are linked to the amount of sulfur in the soil: the lower the sulfur, the lower the levels of these compounds. When some onions grown in the Vidalia region tested for higher levels of these compounds, the researchers were faced with something of a mystery. Soils in Georgia's Vidalia on- ion-growing region were known to be naturally low in sulfur, and soil samples taken from Vidalia onion fields were show- ing low sulfur levels. However, most soil samples were taken from the top six inches of soil. Jackson and researchers took deeper soil samples and found that sulfur from fertilizers had Preparing a laboratory sample requires taking one core sample out of the middle rings of 10 Vidalia onions from a 10-pound bag. leached through the sandier topsoil and had built up in the clay level farther down. Georgia Ag Awareness Week: Help us start a statewide conversation about the importance of farming The Georgia Department of Agriculture is encouraging schools and communities statewide to participate in Georgia Agriculture Awareness Week March 20-24. The department is hosting themed events each day of the week from its headquarters in Atlanta. The week kicks off March 20 with a "Pennies for Produce" drive. Schools are asked to collect funds all week that food banks across the state can use to purchase local produce in season. Instructions and a participation form can be found online at http://FeedMySchool.org/FMS/AG_ Awareness_Week_Monday. Also on Monday, March 20, the department will set up its "Seasons and Faces" photo exhibit featuring farmers throughout the state. The display will remain in the plaza of the James H. "Sloppy" Floyd Veterans Memorial Building in Atlanta through March 24. The building is across the street from the State Capitol, and houses the Capitol Commons food court, a popular lunch destination for state employees. UGA's Flavor of Georgia Food Product Contest will take place on Tuesday, March 21, in Atlanta. Finalists will compete in the final round of judging that day, and winners will be announced following the competition that evening. The contest highlights Georgia's diverse community of food entrepreneurs and their products. Wednesday, March 22, is Ag Hero Day. Students state- wide are asked to write thank you letters to farmers. Templates are available for download online. Schools are also encouraged to invite a local Ag Hero into classrooms to discuss the importance of agriculture and the impact farming has on the state economy. A short video thanking Ag Heroes for the food and fiber they provide in our daily lives will be posted on the department's social media sites for communities and schools to view and share. Schools may download and edit the Ag Hero Day press release to promote their school's contribution to Ag Awareness Week. Thursday, March 23, is Ag Literacy Day. With guidance from the Georgia Farm Bureau, the department is encouraging local and state partners to read a designated agriculture-themed book to a local school classroom. Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black will be reading to 22 students at Morningside Elementary School. Gov. Nathan Deal and First Lady Sandra Deal will also be reading to a group of 15 students from Woodland Elementary School at the Capitol. Contact Donna Rocker at dhrocker@gfb.org for classroom activities and more information. Friday, March 24, is Make My Plate Georgia Grown Day. The department's Farm to School Program and the Georgia Department of Education's School Nutrition Program have partnered together to create a Georgia Grown menu for use in school cafeterias across the state. A list of recipes, the menu and a press release are available online. For press releases, forms, downloads and more information please visit http://feedmyschool.org/FMS/AG_Awareness_Week.
