BLAC K, COMMISS ION ER How Georgia restored 2017 temperatures cotton to the throne Unstable temperatures spell By Erin Burnett erin.burnett@agr.georgia.gov trouble for The Peach State Since 1733 when cotton was first planted in the Trustee's Garden near the city of Savannah in the new colony of Georgia, it has been woven into the social and economic fabric of the state. Cotton thrust Georgia to the forefront of the international economic stage, fueled the Industrial Revolution and gave rise to extension and entomological sciences in the South. In the last century, this thread of cotton became intertwined with the boll weevil. For more than 70 years, this insect was Georgia's greatest economic enemy until the advent of the Boll Weevil Eradication program in 1987. Thanks to this program, the 2015 farm gate value of Georgia cotton was more than $700 million with approximately 1.4 million acres crossing the state. Cotton is a vital piece of Georgia's past and present, and great lengths are being taken to assure its place in the state's future. In 1911, Georgia harvested its largest cotton crop yet: 2.8 million bales produced on 4.9 million acres. However, a threat more than 1,000 miles away quickly made its way to Georgia. By this point, boll weevils had already traveled from their first U.S. sighting in Brownsville, Texas, across the Mississippi and to the neighboring state of Alabama. On Aug. 25, 1915, farmers in Thomasville sighted the first boll weevil in Georgia. This spelled disaster for the state's booming cotton industry. By 1917, every cotton-producing county in Georgia reported boll weevils, and cotton production dropped 30 percent. This decline continued and in 1921, Georgia losses had See COTTON, page 12 JAN FEB MAR APR In previous years, blueberries have contributed over $330 million and peaches have contributed $53 million to the state's economy annually. Find out why this year's unusual temperatures mean big losses for Georgia's produce industry. An extremely warm winter followed by a brutal and short March frost resulted in a shortage of peaches and blueberries, two of Georgia's most important produce commodities. The warm winter encouraged blueberries to bloom early, many of which were killed by March's frost. During the winter, peaches were deprived of the chill hours they needed under 45 degrees Fahrenheit to produce as well. Read on to explore the data behind what happened to Georgia Grown peaches and blueberries. Carter Editor Like the Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz, I'm on the hunt for a brain. I made a mistake in this space last issue by lop- ping a whole 12 months off of my tenure with the Great State of Georgia. I guess my subconscious was trying to soothe my hurt feelings over the number of candles on my birthday cake this year. If Jack Spruill tests the crowd's knowledge of I'd known I was going to live this long, I agriculture during a game of Kahoot! at the would have taken better care of my knees. 2016 Georgia National Fair. (Amy Carter/GDA) The aforementioned miscalculation of my service matters to no one but me, but I couldn't in good conscience let it stand uncorrected. If you can't trust me with frivolous details, why should you trust me with unfrivolous ones? The answer to that question is Jack Spruill. All the world calls him director of the Georgia Department of Agriculture's Marketing Division. I think of him as the Wizard of Ag. From the moment I set foot in the door 29 months ago (not 17 as previously reported), my frequent queries into the minutia of Georgia agriculture have been met with this directive: "Go ask Jack." I got a bit of a complex about it at first, because it felt a lot like a game my parents would play when I was a teenager asking permission to spend the night at a friend's house. "Go ask your Daddy," Mama would say. "Go ask your Mama," Daddy would say. They'd bounce me back and forth until I got so exasperated I'd stomp my left foot, plant my fists on my hips, and demand a decision. I got two weeks on restriction, which at my house meant pulling weeds. It built character, but the jury's still out on whether it was good character or bad. If they come back with a verdict for the latter, please send Reese's peanut butter cups and a metal file. Jack will probably do his happy dance if I'm sent away. Whenever my curiosity is piqued which, let's face it, I'm a woman and a reporter, so everyone and everything interests me I follow the beige terrazzo floor from my office to Jack's, plop myself down in the chair in front of his desk and start shooting from the lip. I thought one day about wearing red high heels and tap-dancing down there, singing We're Off to See the Wizard as I went, but that seems a little ostentatious for government work. I'm trying to curb my flamboyant tendencies in the interest of fitting in. The struggle is real. Jack is a really good sport about it all. He even draws me pictures when I'm being particularly ob- tuse. I have a great one of the dairy and beef cattle production cycle, which I stare at for five minutes every day because I still don't fully comprehend it. That is no fault of Jack's. He's the master of topics both germane and esoteric. For example, he taught me that ground black pepper is an excellent source of protein, and that Marvel Mystery Oil won't resurrect a broke down pick-up truck. That's the only thing he's ever said to me that hurt my feelings. I love that truck. I would also dearly love to be able to paint you an eloquent picture of Jack, but I can't hold a candle to him in the wordsmithing department. He's grown a beard and mustache that make him a dead ringer for the Scottish actor Sean Connery, but he (thankfully) still speaks Southern, because those moments that drive him to say, "I'm so confused I've either found a rope or lost a horse," wouldn't have the same ring in any other language. Those of us who study at the feet of the master call these sayings "Jack-isms," and they've become as important as breathing in our daily routines. Jack always leaves us laughing. My personal favorite, especially lately: "I am just pushing a rope." Another good one: "You can't trust a man that doesn't have time to find his socks." And of course: "I can weld anything but the crack of dawn or a broken heart." If you want to hear more, come visit us when we take our show on the road to the Georgia National Fair in Perry Oct. 5-15, and the Sunbelt Agricultural Expo in Moultrie Oct. 17-19. And now, as Jack would say and no, I can't explain this one: "I'm off to see the gizzard!" By Arty Schronce With summer's scorching heat and plethora of gold, red and orange flowers, the appearance of white rain lilies (Zephyranthes candida) in late August and September is a refreshing treat. White rain lilies bloom following late summer rains, but a wet summer can sometimes coax them to begin earlier. Their botanical name means "pure white flower of the west wind." I feel cooler just thinking about that. Some references call them storm lilies, but I have not heard that name used in Georgia. White rain lilies are not true lilies, but their name is appropriate enough. Although the flowers are neither large (1-2 inches across) nor tall (7-11 inches), they possess a lily's simple beauty. The foliage is about the same height or a little shorter than the flowers. The narrow, rush-like leaves The flowers of white rain lily are a refreshing treat in late summer. The plant's small stature makes it a good choice for the front of a perennial garden or for planting by a walkway. (Arty Schronce/GDA) are a glossy green and attractive in their own right. Although weeding is not a fun task, it is pleasant to run my fingers through the white rain lily's leaves when picking out intruders. The white rain lily's size makes it perfect for a rock garden, the front of a perennial garden, the edge of a walkway or even as a container plant, provided it is kept adequately watered. There are other rain lilies, but the white rain lily is the one most commonly sold and has proved the most durable and useful in my garden. It produces the most flowers and multiplies readily without being a nuisance. I have enough to share with friends, but haven't needed to dig any up and throw them on the compost pile. Other rain lilies may have different blooming times and larger or smaller flowers. I have had decent luck with the yellow rain lily (Zephyranthes citrina) and the large pink rain lily (Zephyranthes grandiflora). I have also had good results with Zephyranthes atamasca, our native species of rain lily known as the Atamasco lily. It is native from Maryland to Florida and Mississippi. (In a quirk of botanical nomenclature, the species name ends in "a" while the common name ends in "o.") I have to keep track of where I have planted all of these rain lilies, though, to prevent them from being overwhelmed by other plants and protect them from my forgetful shovel. I want to continue to try more species and varieties, however. Rain lilies thrive in full sun to half shade. White rain lily is the most adaptable of them all. It is hardy throughout Georgia and tolerates a wide variety of soils. Rain lilies are available from some bulb suppliers and specialty nurseries and garden centers. You may also find hybrids and rarer species if you search the internet or subscribe to garden magazines. And of course, always check the ads in the Market Bulletin. Some garden centers and mail-order sources sell them potted instead of as dormant bulbs. This may be a good idea, as some experts note that the small rain lily bulbs can become too dry if kept long in storage. Katelin Benkoski joins Mobile Dairy Classroom as assistant instructor Watkinsville Katelin Benkoski is joining the Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Milk's Mobile Dairy Classroom Program as assistant instructor. Georgia's Mobile Dairy Classroom is a dynamic, fun and educational program funded by Georgia's dairy farm Katelin Benkoski families. Instructors visit schools, agricultural events, camps and fairs with a 30-foot Mobile Dairy Classroom that features a fully operational milking parlor and contains a live cow used for milking and feeding demonstrations. Benkoski, from Madison, grew up on a small dairy farm and is currently pursuing a Master's Degree of Agribusiness at the University of Georgia. While growing up, Benkoski was very active in her local 4-H and FFA chapters. Her love of agriculture led her to complete a double major in Animal Science and Agribusiness at UGA. She also participated in various extracurricular activities in- cluding Block and Bridle, UGA Cattleman's Association, Alpha Gamma Delta and the Athens Youth Symphony. "We are excited to welcome Katelin to our organiza- tion. Her background and interest in agriculture and the dairy industry will be an asset to our program," said Tim Camp, a Georgia dairy farmer who chairs the ACCM. Benkoski will join Mobile Dairy Classroom Coordina- tor Nicole Karstedt at several events this fall for training. Georgia's Mobile Dairy Classroom visits close to 150 schools and educates more than 200,000 consumers at fairs and events each year. Don McGough receives GFB Commodity Award Longtime Georgia Farm Bureau Commodities Director Don McGough received the 2017 GFB Commodity Award during the GFB Commodity Conference, held Aug. 3 at the University of Georgia Tifton Campus. One of the organization's highest honors, the commodity award is given each year to honor individuals who support and promote Georgia agriculture. "I've known Don throughout my time being involved with Georgia Farm Bureau. His dedication to our farmer members through the years was evident by the relationships he has made with all the groups he has worked with," said Georgia Farm Bureau President Gerald Long. "Don was an integral part of our organization's success for nearly 40 years." McGough was born in Tifton and grew up in Lee County on his family's farm, where they grew peanuts and corn and raised cattle and hogs. In his youth he was an active 4-H'er and in high school, McGough participated in FFA. As an FFA member, he raised boars, showed steers, participated in public speaking projects, and sang in the FFA Quartet. Shortly after graduating from the University of Georgia in 1977, McGough began working at Georgia Farm Bureau in the field services department. After a brief stint at the organization's state offices, he moved to GFB's 10th District and was the district field representative. McGough briefly left GFB to work in agriculture research for DeKalb Seed in Edenton, N.C, but returned to farm bureau as a commodity specialist in the commodities/ marketing department in 1980. In 1986 McGough was named assistant director of the department. He was promoted to department director in 1997. He worked for six GFB Presidents: Emmett Reynolds, Bob Nash, Mort Ewing, Wayne Dollar, Zippy Duvall and Gerald Long. After 20 years as department director and 37 years of service, McGough retired on March 30. "I relied heavily on Don's leadership working with not only row crops but all commodity areas," said Duvall, who now serves as president of the American Farm Bureau Federation. "I could always count on his professionalism and discretion when representing our organization with outside groups. Don was also an important part of the American Farm Bureau Farm Bill Task Force as we prepare for the 2018 Farm Bill." From livestock to specialty crops and row crops, at some point in his distinguished career McGough worked with all the various commodity groups. His greatest accomplishment as commodities/marketing department director was building excellent relationships with external Georgia Farm Bureau President Gerald Long, right, presents the 2017 GFB Commodity Award to Don McGough at the Georgia Farm Bureau Commodity Conference on Aug. 3. McGough was recognized for his contributions to Georgia Agriculture during his 37 years working with GFB. (Photo courtesy Georgia Farm Bureau) agricultural organizations and the Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commissions. Providing a reliable link to these external groups back to Georgia Farm Bureau helped all aspects of the industry thrive. "I've always said that if I was in any county in the state and had a flat tire or needed anything, I knew someone well enough I could call," McGough said. "Building relationships through farm bureau not only gave me professional contacts, but gave me some good friends." McGough was the recipient of the Georgia Peanut Commission's Special Award in 2017 for his contributions to the peanut industry. He was recognized by the Georgia Aquaculture Association for his efforts to help establish that group in the early 1990s. He is past president of the Georgia Ag Economics Association. McGough was also instrumental in the formation of the Georgia Farm Bureau Certified Farm Market program in 1986. McGough is an avid fisherman and a certified "Memphis in May" barbecue judge. He is a longtime member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Bolingbroke and was recently selected to serve as a deacon. McGough has been married to his wife, Patti, for 42 years. They have three grown sons: Jon, Alan and Patrick. -Submitted by Georgia Farm Bureau PAGE 8 FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN 404-656-3722 agr.georgia.gov WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 30, 2017 Purebred red Angus bulls and heif- Saanens: kids, does/bucks, regis- Boer goats. PAGE 12 FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN 404-656-3722 agr.georgia.gov WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 30, 2017 The countdown to fall has begun Farmers mow corn, put finishing touches on mazes Editor's Note: This is the second installment in an occasional series about corn mazes in Georgia. Check back with us for a listing of agritourism sites hosting corn maze tours in the fall. By Leslie Davis leslie.davis@agr.georgia.gov As the seasons change and the air begins to cool, many Georgians find themselves starting to plan for their next fall adventure. For most, this means exploring their local agritourism sites, many of which house a widely known fall pastime, the corn maze. Little do these visitors know, there is much more than meets the eye when planning and executing these corn-constructed classics. The process of planning a corn maze first begins at the start of the year when a theme for the maze is selected. Many farms choose motifs that are important to their brand or the community in which they are located. Jessica Bolesta of Raisin' Cane Valdosta outlined their plans to collaborate with four local Chic-Fil- A stores in the construction of an "Eat Mor Chikin" themed maze this year. After a theme has been chosen, the real labor begins. GPS coordinates are mapped out in order to begin work on the actual design that will be mowed into the crop. From this point, most farms wait until the early summer season to begin plowing the fields in which the corn mazes will be planted. "The field is plowed after a rain toward the end of June or in the first week of July. We typically plant the maze sometime around the 4th of July. This year, we planted it on July 8th," said Caroline Lewallen of Jaemor Farms in Alto. All of these planning efforts lead up to the most critical time in maze planning, the late summer season or what is the month prior to the maze's opening for many farms. Towards the middle of August, the corn has grown high enough to be mown into the shape of the design. For farms, this no easy task, and many enlist the help of outside companies to complete their designs. Jaemor Farms works with Maize Quest from Pennsylvania in the execution of their corn maze. "Maize Quest uses a specialty computer program that they designed to sync the maze design to the GPS using the field coordinates that we submit in January of each year. It typically takes them six hours to mow out the design each year. Our maze is a little more than six acres in size. That's six football fields of corn," said Lewallen. Once this crucial step has been completed, farmers add the finishing touches to make these sites ready for visitors of all ages. "After the maze design is cut, we let the corn grow for about two more weeks, then we start hanging our signage, check points throughout the maze, and we also ribbon off the sections into different colors so that folks can refer to check point maps within the corn maze to see where they are as they navigate their way through the corn," said Lewallen. Creativity and attention to detail are key as farms around Georgia map out their maze plans year after year. No matter which location you visit this fall season, there is one thing that rings true: Georgia farms go above and beyond to ensure that their corn mazes will be remembered by each and every visiting guest. Cotton: Ornamental and commercial plantings must be permitted by the GDA Continued From Page 1 reached 45 percent, the worst in the United States. This dramatic blow to the South moti- vated an incredible amount of scientific re- search, extension, innovation and legisla- tion. Over 40,000 people attended the first Georgia demonstration of a crop dusting airplane in Athens on Aug. 26, 1924. It wasn't until 1978 when cotton losses had reached more than $200 mil- lion annually, with an estimated one-third of all insecticides used in the United States aimed towards boll weevils that the first successful Trial Boll Weevil Eradication Program was conducted in North Caro- lina. The success of this trial swept the South, and in September 1987, Geor- gia was ushered into modern-day cotton production with the first treatment phase of the national Boll Weevil Eradication Program. This program, which included targeted insecticide treatment and phero- mone trapping, concluded in 1990. "One of the truly great success stories of pest management in Georgia has been the eradication of the boll weevil," said Tommy Gray, director of the Georgia Department of Agriculture's Plant Industry Division. "An incredible amount of resources have gone into eradicating this devastating pest so that Georgia's cotton A boll weevil buries its snout in a cotton boll. This is not allowed anywhere in Georgia. As cotton grown in home gardens is neither inspected nor treated with insecticides, it provides an ideal site for weevils. With modern trans- portation, these weevils could be moved unknowingly from a home garden to a commercial site thousands of miles away in a matter of hours, opening the door to a devastating re-infestation. Therefore, no ornamental plantings are allowed in Georgia or most other cotton-producing states without a permit from the Depart- ment of Agriculture. The eradication foundation must also keep an eye on volunteer cotton plants that pop up along the side of the road near fields. If mature seeds happen to fall off a truck, for example, it is possible that they- could germinate to produce a small haven of non-monitored cotton for the boll wee- vil. "The weevil doesn't care if it's volun- teer or commercially grown cotton," said Wilson. Although this clearing of volun- teer plants is not as imperative post-eradi- cation as it once was, Wilson says, "Once we spot it, we still destroy it."
