BLAC K, COMMISS ION ER Northeast Georgia in the path of totality Infographic by Erin Burnett/GDA Agritourism spots, state parks prepare to host solar eclipse viewing parties By Leslie Davis leslie.davis@agr.georgia.gov On Monday, Aug. 21, a scientific phenomenon known as a total solar eclipse will sweep the nation from coast to coast. Dubbed by scientists as the "Great American Eclipse," this is the first total solar eclipse our nation has seen travel across the Continental U.S. in 99 years. This eclipse will follow what is known as the path of totality from Newport, Oregon, to Charleston, S.C. The northeastern corner of Georgia falls within that path. For those interested in viewing the total eclipse, it is first im- portant to understand why this is happening. Total solar eclipses occur when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun, and Earth's view of the sun is blocked. When this happens, the sky will turn dark, stars will come out and Earth's temperature will begin to drop, much like it does during nighttime. If viewed from within the path of totality, the sun will appear like a black sphere in the sky and its atmosphere more commonly known as the corona will be visible to the human eye. Do not expect this to last long though. Depending on where the eclipse is being viewed, the period of totality will only last a matter of minutes. Even though this event is relatively short, many describe it as a life-changing experience and not one that can be done justice through the lens of a camera. Because the state of Georgia is lucky enough to have its northeastern region within the path of totality, this means that many agritourism spots will be hosting celebrations for people around the state to enjoy. Various places in Fannin, Towns, Rabun, Union and White counties are hosting viewing parties and tailgates. "We are very excited that Cleveland, Hel- en and Sautee Nacoochee in White County are in the totality path of the solar eclipse on August 21st, providing residents and visitors a once in a lifetime experience," said Cindy Bailey, president of the White County Chamber of Commerce and Welcome Center. "We have numerous educational and celebratory activities through the county occurring prior to and during the event." The county even has a Facebook page solely devoted to the event the White County Eclipse Page. It is the hope of many smaller areas around the northeastern region of Geor- See ECLIPSE, page 7 GDA encourages schools, child care facilities to work with pest control industry to reduce pesticide exposure risk Mail to: Published by the Ga. Department of Agriculture Gary W. Black, Commissioner By Kendall McWilliams kendall.mcwilliams@agr.georgia.gov Fall is the prime activity period for pests, which could potentially mean that children aren't the only ones going back to school this time of year. The Georgia Structural Pest Control Commission and the Georgia Department of Agriculture have partnered to establish rules in the Georgia Structural Pest Control Act to reduce pesticide exposure in Georgia schools and child care facilities. The rules are structured around the Integrated Pest Management program, which encourages school systems to hire and communicate with pest management professionals who are licensed to provide pest management services statewide. IPM programs aim to reduce, or completely eliminate, the abundance of pests in school and child care facilities by utilizing different methods of pest maintenance. By using IPM tactics, schools will reduce the use of pes- ticides in an environment where children could potentially be at risk for chemical exposure. The GDA is the state's lead pesticide regulatory and enforcement agency. The department monitors pesticide use for compliance with the rules and regulations of the structural pest control commission to protect the health, safety, welfare and environment of the citizens of Georgia. While the department does not enforce the implementation of an IPM program, it intends to help school systems achieve effective, sustainable pest management goals through education and promotion of the program. "When we talk about IPM in schools and child care facilities, it is important because it reduces the risk of pests and the application of pesticides in the facilities. Of course, these children are still developing so reducing the application of these chemicals or pesticides is a good thing," said Derrick Lastinger, director of the GDA Structural Pest Section. "This program is not a `no pesticide program,' but it encourages judicious use of pesticides," Lastinger, in partnership with Jennifer Wren, enforcement manager for the Plant Protection Division of the GDA, and Brian Forschler and Daniel Suiter of the University of Georgia's Department of Entomology, carried See PESTICIDE EXPOSURE, page 7 PAGE 2 FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN 404-656-3722 agr.georgia.gov WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 16, 2017 1954 TD6 International parts tractor, 2040 JD tractor, w/front-end loader, Case 1680 or 2388 combine; Case 20ft Four spinner hay rake mounted on FARM EMPLOYMENT bad motor; $500. PAGE 6 FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN 404-656-3722 agr.georgia.gov WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 16, 2017 Field Notes: Unintended consequences By Amy H. Carter Editor WANTED: Sturdy, unencumbered female, 60-65 y/o, to tend my chickens and help me on my farm. I moved 350 miles from my lifelong home on the coast to take this job. My first Atlanta traffic jam sparked intense doubt over my decision to do so. But I persevered and eventually traded my minivan for a sunroof with four wheels and a motor, bought myself a subscription to iTunes, and found happiness (again) in the musical stylings of the 1980s. It helps that my daily commute takes me over a crest on Georgia 400 that reveals a far off mountain peak. It's an outrider of the Blue Ridge, and it quiets my impatience. I like the coziness of the mountains. Miles of unobstructed horizon let you see what's coming long before it gets to you. I used to take that as an opportunity to prepare, but then I learned that some collisions simply cannot be avoided. Nowadays, I'd rather languish in a valley surrounded by the tallest mountains I can find. Ignorance is bliss, except in the case of the ad printed above. I happened upon it one day while perusing back issues of the Market Bulletin from the early 1930s. I would give my right hand the very one I hold my pen with to know if anyone responded. And how she responded. There's not a lot of romance in farming, I get that, but what woman willingly answers to sturdy? Heifers are sturdy. Farmhands, too, but think of all the synonyms that long-ago farmer might have used to get what he wanted. On second thought, don't. I just consulted my handy dandy thesaurus, and sturdy is the nicest of them all except for well-made. I'd take that one over sturdy, but that would erase all doubt as to the advertiser's intentions, wouldn't it? Hard times make you answer to things you never thought you would, and the ads published in the Market Bulletin during the 1930s and 1940s bear witness to that truth. The tone got a little more hopeful in the 1940s everyone united to defeat a common enemy. But the Great Depression delivered each man his own personal demons to wrestle. City-dwellers desperate for jobs offered to trade their homes for farmland and all the back-breaking toil that implies. Mothers with children to feed offered themselves and the children as farm laborers in exchange for room and board. Many asked for proximity to church; few made mention of school. The ad referenced above and the reader profile of Sandi LaFoy on page 12 of this issue seem to suggest that companionship, if not love, was still a highly valued commodity in hard times, and often an unintended consequence of meeting one's needs through the Market Bulletin. Sometime in the 1950s, the bulletin staff found it necessary to put in writing that ads for companionship were not suitably farm-related and, therefore, would not be published. Farming is lonely work, however, and if a friendship develops out of the sale of a tractor or a cord of firewood, then we've used our powers for good. Life has a funny way of working things out. When I met with Sandi on her Fayetteville farm to take the picture that accompanies her story, we exchanged polite chit-chat the way strangers do. To her credit, she did not ask me if I am "the real" Amy Carter, the one who belongs to former President Jimmy Carter. She did ask where I am from. When I told her Brunswick, she said, "Me too!" We have several acquaintances in common and even graduated from the same high school Glynn Academy. Go Red Terrors! Making connections like that with long-time readers is my favorite perk of this job. With 29 months under my belt, I'm a relative newcomer to the Market Bulletin, but already it feels like home. A(angneL7a8mabnedrtstill love and long for the country!) Arty's Garden: Making the cut By Arty Schronce The abundance of summer flowers often fills gardeners with the desire to bring some of the glory inside by making a flower arrangement. I have an all-encompassing view on the subject. If a container holds water, it is a vase. If I can cut something and fit it into a vase, it is a cut flower. Under those conditions almost everything qualifies and can be used. While florists have to choose things that ship well and that have the longest vase life possible, you can choose flowers regardless of their longevity. Daylilies are a Anise-scented salvia, cutleaf coneflower, zinnias, abelia, obedient plant and prime example. The ones that showy sedum create a mid-September riot of color. open at dawn are unsuitable (Photo by Arty Schronce/GDA) for a dinner party, but are fine for a Sunday morning church service. The wide variety of flowers you can include will make your bouquets and arrangements unique. However, don't limit yourself to flowers. Seed heads of dock that you often find in fields and old pastures are useful as green spires. The green seed heads of river oats add a touch of airy grace to a large arrangement. Bare branches are useful if they have an interesting color such as coral bark Japanese maple or features such as the corky protuberances of winged elm. Branches of foliage can be useful. The leaves of yellow euonymus shine as bright as a flower. Purple basil and scented geraniums have leaves that add fragrance as well as texture or color. For best results during hot weather, cut flowers early in the morning. This is usually when their moisture content is highest and the flowers are more turgid. It is also the most comfortable time to be outside. Use a sharp knife or a pair of pruning clippers. Plunge the cut stems into a bucket of lukewarm water. Recut the stems under water, if possible, before arranging. Although summer is flush with flowers, I make flower arrangements all year long. Paperwhite narcissus, wintersweet, laurustinus and winter jasmine are reliable winter favorites. Daffodils, triteleia, forsythia, Siberian iris, ox-eye daisies and mock orange are a few early and late spring choices. Summer and fall come in with zinnias, gomphrena, dahlias, cosmos, coneflowers, goldenrod and sunflowers. One of the most useful plants for a cutting garden is abelia. This shrub has white flowers all summer and rosy calyces that are still attractive after the flowers go. Its stems are small and easy to insert in any arrangement. It is excellent filler. There are varieties with golden or variegated leaves, though the regular bronze ones are attractive, too. Clasping heliotrope is another long-blooming filler flower. A wide array of vessels can serve as vases. Daisies or black-eyed Susans arranged in an antique blue Mason jar have a rustic appeal, while lilies arranged in a cut-crystal or silver vase have a touch of elegance and formality. The narrow bottles of the various oils from Oliver Farm have served as bud vases for bringing flowers to the office as have the brown bottles of A-1 Steak Sauce. Deep blue is an ideal vase color as there are so few truly blue flowers, and the blue seems to complement almost any flower. The most important thing about a vase is that it be clean. Dirt and bacteria shorten the life of cut flowers. Wash the vase with soap or dishwashing liquid and rinse thoroughly. If you worry about color coordination, use as many colors as possible. After all, the rainbow has multiple colors, and I've never heard anyone Nothing is as simple as a single flower in a single vase. An open bloom of Festiva Maxima peony is a bouquet unto itself. (Photo by Arty Schronce/GDA) complain about that. If you seek a more refined or restrained look, stick with similar colors all cool ones or all warm ones. Or keep it even simpler by using only one kind of flower in one color. I have never had anyone turn up their nose at a bouquet consisting only of yellow roses or purple dahlias. If you don't have enough of your own flowers, visit a farmers market. I have seen many stalls with locally grown ranunculus, sweet peas, nigella, poppies and many other flowers I have never seen from a commercial florist. -Arty Schronce is the department's resident gardening expert. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 16, 2017 FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN 404-656-3722 agr.georgia.gov PAGE 7 Chinese delegation reassesses U.S. poultry industry The USDA led an official site in July a delegation of Chinese agriculture officials to evaluate the U.S. poultry industry. The delegation toured several poultry producing states throughout the country, including Georgia. In Gainesville, they visited the Georgia Poultry Laboratory. An overview of the poultry industry and the Georgia Department of Agriculture's regulatory responsibilities, preparedness and response capabilities as it relates to the poultry industry and avian influenza was presented by State Veterinarian Dr. Robert Cobb of the GDA, Dr. Martin Smeltzer of the USDA and Dr. Louise Dufour-Zavala of the Georgia Poultry Laboratory Network. China banned poultry imports from the U.S. in 2015 during an outbreak of avian influenza. Pesticide Exposure Continued From Page 1 out a project over the last year to develop a publication that will be used to educate facility staff and pest management professionals about the importance of utilizing an IPM plan. The team's intention was to create a reference manual that will educate and motivate schools and child care facilities to develop an IPM plan specific to their campus. "IPM is just an extra layer of precaution because these pesticides are already highly regulated by U.S. EPA," Lastinger said. "But this is just bigger than that. This is how to further reduce risk of exposure and also how to manage pests." While IPM programs are not currently mandated by the state of Georgia, the GDA strongly supports their implementation to ensure the safety and well-being of students and faculty. "We wanted to stress to schools and pest control companies that even though they are not required by law to come up with an IPM plan, it is recommended and it is for their own good and protection," said Wren. "That's what most of this publication is about the voluntary adoption of an IPM program whether you're a pest control company that has been hired or a school." The team has also worked alongside the University of Georgia Urban and Structural Pest Management Program to develop and facilitate a "School IPM Workshop" held at the UGA Griffin Campus. The workshop is open to all licensed pest management professionals, as well as school system personnel who hold pest management responsibilities. "Schools are one of those sensitive environments, so it's important that pest control applicators be aware of their management options," said Suiter. "Pesticides can be a crutch sometimes, which is why we start with the basics in our workshops." Suiter, an extension entomologist through UGA, says that the department of agriculture has been instrumental in a number of pest control workshops since day one. "These workshops would not be successful without the department," said Suiter. In addition to the publication and workshops, the GDA seeks to be a resource for school systems and child care facilities statewide by offering technical assistance regarding regulatory requirements for applicator licensing, pesticide applications and other pesticide related laws and regulations. Thanks to the efforts of the Georgia Department of Agriculture and the UGA Department of Entomology, parents can rest assured that the majority of pests will remain between the pages of a science textbook and out of the classroom. Immunization is an important component of equine health care August is National Immunization Awareness Month. Immunization helps reduce the risk of contracting certain dangerous and sometimes deadly infectious diseases. The use of vaccines to immunize our pets and livestock is important in reducing the spread of certain infectious diseases between animals and from animals to humans. Getting vaccinated is an important component of preventive care for many domestic species, including horses. Some vaccines which are recommended for horses are those pertaining to viral infections which cause inflammation of the brain and spinal cord (encephalomyelitis). Viral causes of brain and spinal cord inflammation can cause clinical signs such as central nervous system dysfunction with moderate to high mortality. Viruses in this group of major concern in the United States are Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEE), Western equine encephalitis (WEE), Venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEE), and West Nile virus. These viruses are primarily transmitted by mosquitoes that take blood meals from infected animals and then feed on horses or other animals (including people) that have no previous exposure to the virus. These viruses can affect a wide range of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians. Horses infected with EEE, WEE or VEE can have illnesses ranging from fever, anorexia, depression, neurologic abnormalities and sometimes death. Horses infected with West Nile virus may exhibit similar signs of neurologic dysfunction, lethargy, weakness and even death; however, most horses recover. People may also be exposed through the bite of an infected mosquito. Symptoms in people vary from mild flu-like symptoms to death. People with neurologic disease can have permanent impairment even after recovery. Pest control and vaccination are significant components to preventing these viral infections. Vaccines against equine encephalomyelitiscausing viruses are widely available and considered core vaccines for all horses in the United States by the American Association of Equine Practitioners. Consulting with your veterinarian is important in deciding how vaccines should be administered to your horse(s). And, consult with your veterinarian if abnormal behavior and signs of illness are observed in your horse(s). Protection of horses must also include efforts to minimize exposure to infected mosquitoes. Regular cleaning of housing areas, removal of stagnant water, and pasture maintenance are important steps in reducing exposure to these viruses. Viral equine encephalitis is a reportable disease in Georgia to the departments of agriculture and public health. Vector control and vaccination are critical to reduce the risk of infection. As a precaution, physicians, veterinarians and other health officials should report cases of patients having flu-like symptoms with neurologic impairment. -Georgia Department of Agriculture Animal Industry Division Eclipse Continued From Page 1 gia that the solar eclipse will help to put them on the map as potential tourist destinations to visit even after the eclipse is over. "We are so excited for the upcoming solar eclipse because we believe that this will lead to huge exposure for our area," said Tobie Chandler, tourism director of the Blairsville Union County Chamber of Commerce. "Our hope is that those people who have never heard about our little mountain town will come here for the eclipse and will love the area just as much as we do. We hope that many of them will even come back and spend their fall weekends with us." Whether viewers spend time camping at Brasstown Bald or attending the catered viewing party at Yonah Mountain Vineyards, one thing is for sure: to fully experience the wonder that is the total solar eclipse, observers must take the journey to the eclipse's path of totality. Book a trip to a Georgia agritourism spot within that path sooner rather than later in order to ensure the chance to experience this once in a lifetime event. Solar Eclipse Viewing Safety Tips It is important to remember to wear solar viewing glasses at all times of the eclipse. Only during the brief period of totality is it safe to look at the eclipse without solar glasses. Regular sunglasses are not enough to protect your eyes. You must use AAS-approved solar viewing glasses. Viewing the eclipse without proper eyewear can result in sunburn of your eyes or even blindness. Georgia residents can find local libraries in their area giving out free solar glasses here: http:// spacescience.org/software/ libraries/map.php To find an additional list of AASapproved solar viewers visit: https://eclipse.aas.org/resources/ solar-filters Cook Georgia Grown: Georgia Pecan Pie Ingredients: 9-inch crust 1 cups all-purpose flour tsp. salt 1 Tbsp. sugar cup butter, chilled, cut in pieces cup shortening - cup ice water Preparation: In the bowl of food processor, combine flour, salt and sugar. This herd of crossbred cows has an impressive rolling herd average for milk production at more than 28,000 pounds of milk per year. Williams farms 3,657 acres. Half of this land is rented and half is owned. As a result of his success as a dairy farmer, Williams has been selected as state winner of the Swisher Sweets/ Sunbelt Expo Southeastern Farmer of the Year award. He joins nine other individuals as finalists for the overall award that will be announced on Oct. 17 at the Sunbelt Expo farm show in Moultrie. As the Georgia state winner of the Swisher Sweets/ Sunbelt Expo award, Williams will receive a $2,500 cash award and an expense paid trip to the Sunbelt Expo from Swisher International of Jacksonville, Fla., a $500 gift certificate from the Southern States cooperative and a Columbia vest from Ivey's Outdoor and Farm Supply. He is now eligible for the $15,000 cash prize that will go to the overall winner. Other prizes for the overall winner include the use of a Massey Ferguson tractor for a year from Massey Ferguson North America, another $500 gift certificate from Southern States, a Columbia jacket from Ivey's Outdoor and Farm Supply, a smokergrill from Hays LTI and a Henry Golden Boy "American Farmer Tribute Edition" rifle from Reinke Irrigation. Lucy Ray, University of Georgia Extension Agent in Morgan County, nominated Williams for the award. "Everett is a good example of a modern dairy farmer," Ray said. "He's very involved in his community and in the dairy industry, and he's a great example of how successful a family can be." Ray said she especially admires how Williams recycles sand from his barns and how his farming practices benefit natural resources. WDairy shipped almost 52 million pounds of fluid milk last year. Williams sells milk through the 18-member Cobblestone Milk Cooperative to markets from Orlando to Virginia. Williams's father, John Williams, started the dairy in 1958 as an alternative to cotton. While growing up, Everett worked on the dairy. He milked cows during weekends while majoring in dairy science at the University of Georgia. Following graduation, he managed a South Georgia dairy before returning home to the family dairy in 1978. Williams hosts numerous tours for neighbors, and national and international visitors on his farm, and is committed to community service. He was a volunteer fire fighter and a member of Morgan County Farm Bureau for a number of years. He currently serves on the Pennington Cemetery Board. He is a local and state 4-H and FFA volunteer, and a member of the Morgan County Dairy Association. On the state level, he is president of the Georgia Milk Producers and serves on a University of Georgia Veterinary School advisory board. He serves on the boards of Central Georgia Electric Membership Cooperative and Georgia Transmission Cooperative. He has testified on dairy topics before the Georgia House, the U.S. House and the California Department of Agriculture. Williams represents Georgia dairy farmers at national conferences and often speaks to groups in Georgia about modern dairy farming. Nationally, Williams is on the board of Cobblestone Milk Cooperative and served on the boards of CarolinaVirginia Milk Producers and Southeast Milk. His farm has also won awards for production and quality from the Dairy Herd Improvement Association and milk cooperatives. -John Leidner is a freelance agricultural writer and photographer based in Tifton. He is a retired regional editor for Progressive Farmer magazine. Photo by John Leidner Reader Profile: Sandi LaFoy By Kendall McWilliams kendall.mcwilliams@agr.georgia.gov By providing an avenue for the exchange of goods and services, the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin has fostered relationships between the residents of farming communities across the state of Georgia for 100 years. In some cases, these relationships have even developed well past the consumeristic nature encouraged by a normal classified publication. Today, the Market Bulletin is a resource for farmers looking to buy, sell and trade everything from farm machinery to livestock. However, in the years following the Great Depression, there were many who submitted advertisements seeking work and, more indirectly, companionship to help them weather the hardships that came as a result of economic decline. Taking a look at advertisement submissions from the past, it is clear that times were tough for some families in rural Georgia. Georgians ranging from ages of youth to those in the final season of life turned to the Market Bulletin in search of employment with the addition of room and board. In 1948, Mrs. Ruth M. Skinner sought employment on a farm by placing an advertisement in the Market Bulletin. In addition to the employment request, she asked for a small house and a means of relocation for herself and four children, who were 7 to 13 years old. A 1943 advertisement seeks housing and employment for a family of four a man, his wife and their two boys. Whether by the wages of war or as a result of dire financial circumstance, the era following the Great Depression was a time when families were uprooted. Sandi LaFoy, a Market Bulletin subscriber from Fayette- Photo by Amy Carter/GDA ville, says her family was no exception to the threat of upheaval. LaFoy recalls a story passed down from her father regarding her grandfather's search for "female farm help" someone to help tend house, garden and care for small children after the Great Depression claimed the life of his bride, leaving him to raise eight children alone. "His Pa, having eight children with only one married off, was thrown into a more dire circumstance. Where to turn to for help?" LaFoy said. Soon after becoming a widower, LaFoy's grandfather stumbled across an advertisement in the Market Bulletin submitted by Ms. Molly, a middle-aged widow seeking to fill a position that would afford her room, board and a job on a farm. "Was this an answer to an unspoken prayer for both? Maybe so, according to Daddy. So, Pa answered the advertisement request. Ms. Molly came to stay a while and my daddy came to love Ms. Molly greatly," said LaFoy. "Ms. Molly was kind and sweet to all the children. She `mothered' them at her best." The family lore maintains that, because of the Market Bulletin and a little help from the hand of fate, LaFoy's grandfather and Ms. Molly were eventually married, though no record of such a union can be found. Ever since, LaFoy's family has maintained a strong readership of the Market Bulletin over the years. Today, years removed from the era of Ms. Molly, LaFoy remains a loyal subscriber who enjoys reading the paper cover to cover every month. She has even made a few friends and connections herself, simply by responding to ads. LaFoy commends the Market Bulletin for helping farmers to help each other, and in addition nurturing an understanding of the agriculture industry among consumers. "Everyone just rides by, flies over or looks at pictures of pretty fields. We need a whole new appreciation for how things get to table and market," she said. Although the nature of the Market Bulletin has shifted over its 100-year tenure, it's still dedicated to linking farmers and consumers all over Georgia by promoting a line of communication between those who take an interest in the agriculture industry. "The Market Bulletin does make connections, whether you buy or sell or just read," LaFoy said. "I think people can make connections as well as friends."
